Calling All Foodies!

April 11th, 2011 @ 2:40 pm by Mrs. Prairie Dog

Hive, Imma play it straight. I need to hit you up for some information, so let me just ask you this up front: when you attend a wedding, what are you hoping to have for dinner? Like…what’s the best thing you’ve ever eaten at a wedding? (Dare I ask…what’s the worst thing…?)

Personally, I prefer delicious but somewhat “lighter” foods, so I don’t feel to weighed down to dance later. Easy enough, right? I should have no problem finalizing my own wedding menu.

But here’s my problem: Pdog and I are very eclectic eaters. This past week alone, we ate scallops one night, salmon another, plus Thai, homemade Mexican, Greek, and Indian food. And—fine—I had a bowl of cereal for dinner one night. Like your diet is sooo perfect.

Since I like everything, it’s hard for me to guess what pickier eaters would dislike. I’d like to venture outside of Chicken Parmesan for our reception dinner, but I want to keep options open for choosier diners as well.

One thing I’m sure of:

Greek Chicken (spinach, artichoke, etc.) paired with couscous or maybe a pasta with feta, tomatoes, etc.? I’m also considering pad Thai. I love pad Thai. It goes with…umm, nothing else on the menu, but I kind of what it anyway, as an option. Is that weird?

So…hit me with your ideas, if you please. Do you fancy a caprese salad, a risotto, a hearty steak dish? Dream wedding meal: go.

For me, I would LOVE the option of something lighter… but that’s because I tend to get sick at every wedding I go to, because it’s always steak or some kind of heavy meat. That being said - I think that is what “most” people DO like, which is why it’s such a popular choice - some kind of chicken or beef. A greek chicken with couscous sounds delish to me, though! And not too heavy.

Mmmmm. I’m an eclectic eater too. Ideally? I just want a bunch of appetizers! From any cuisine. Spanakopita? YES PLEASE! Mini sliders? Sure! Mini Brie en croutes..yum-o. Crabcakes. Prawns. Fondue. Ahh.

I once had chocolate truffles with bacon bits on top and it was diviiiine (and I don’t dig too much on bacon).

Okay, I know I was no help…but I’m hungry, on a limited calorie-intake diet, and you told me to dream!

I think pad thai is simple and loveable - but my picky eater friend cannot stand it and thinks it tastes ‘weird and fishy’. just food for thought since you’re concerned about what pickier eaters will think.

if you want lighter, go with grain/pasta/bean salads that can have fun flavours, I guess, but still seem overall pretty normal.

I’m one of those picky eaters and I would love a “build your own (burritos/mashed potatoes/etc.) section”. Since my tastes differ from most, it would be nice to pick and choose what to include in my food. Thai food sounds amazing for a reception too!

I love Pad Thai! Never had it at a wedding though. I prefer pastas at a wedding, I can eat as much as I want but not feel like I need to clean my plate. How about shrimp scampi! That with some rice is light and delish!

I think if you love pad thai, it should make an appearance! We decided to kind of throw out the notion of a cohesive menu and just compile a meal that shows off our fav foods.

We’re doing chicken cordon bleu at our wedding. Maybe you could do a pasta dish with a light oil sauce and a ton of colorful veggies?

Caprese salad fo sho- we would’ve done it had heirloom tomatoes been in season.
Our wedding menu went over reeeeeeally well and we had many tell us that it was the best “wedding food” they’d ever had. To start there was a salad of baby greens, apples, balsamic marinated roasted grapes, white cheddar, and glazed pecans with a apple cider vinaigrette. Then for vegetarians we had a veggie risotto, for the carnivores we had a bacon wrapped beef fillet with mushrooms and a pinot noir sauce, garlic asiago mashed potatoes and roasted butternut squash with thyme. Everything was delicious and we still had lots folks on the dance floor afterward! :)

As a vegetarian, the thing that I am not crazy about as a vegetarian is a grilled portobello mushroom on a plate or pasta primavera. Yeah, it’s ok, but it’s the same thing we get EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Pad Thai would be awesome, as would other kinds of Indian/Asian cuisines. If you’re going with a Greek theme, spanikopita is yummy, and I like the idea of your pasta with feta and tomatoes. (I have a recipe for orzo salad with scallions, pine nuts, and feta that is to DIE for.)

My dream food-wedding for a while (before we got really serious with the planning) was an Indian buffet. Ah that would have been delicious. Cheap too! My other dream-wedding-food would be a big brick oven churning out pizzas with fresh wonderful toppings - there’s a pizzeria in our neighborhood that actually lets you rent a truck to do that; our neighbors had a big party with it the day before their wedding. (Very sad we missed that as we were on our own honeymoon at the time). Pad thai would be great too. As a vegetarian, mainly I’m just interested in something *interesting* that isn’t just a gross-ish boring-ish plate of noodles or bland roasted vegetables or a portobello cap.

As pretty as they look, I am not a big fan of exotic sauces and would shy away from anything really gourmet. The salad MissBiscuit mentioned sounds amazing. I love chicken, so I’m average! Seafood is okay if it’s salmon. I would really be happy with LittlestBirds’ pizza idea above.

i don’t like to leave a wedding hungry so my ideal wedding photo would have a mixture of light things and really heavy things. Mmmm..like fresh salad really any will do although my favs are garden, cesar, blue cheese w/cranberries, and maybe brushetta for a light app. Oh and dont forget different types of bread I love it where there are different ones to choose from :) Then maybe a steak, prime rib or salmon paired up with either garlicy mashed potatoes, herb fingerling potatoes, or a fun risotto. As a side some veggies like baby carrots or sauteed zucchini, squash, etc. some veggie that has a hint of sweet :)

I really dislike wedding chicken. I love lamb at weddings. As for Pad Thai, great idea but I feel like unless your caterers actually specialise in thai food it never quite comes out right.

We are having paella at our wedding. It hasn’t happened yet so I can’t say how it will taste, but everyone who knows our menu can’t wait. We are having a heavier meat option with a mashed potato bar for those who want it as well as a pasta station with grilled veggies and chicken.

I’d go with the chicken — sometimes I think people can be frightened by “exotic” names. We are going with food with a more local flavor to feature what is popular where our wedding is being held. On a similar note, we are having one of our showers at my favorite Greek places and the menu will include basic seasoned chicken as well as moussaka and gyros — a little something for everyone.

i’m a huge foodie, and the one thing i hate at events is chicken haha! it’s usually just so boring and dry and bleh bleh bleh. so many options in the world!

i figure, go with what you like. buffet is what i’m planning, because then you’re not forcing people to pick one particular food. bring on the veggies (in my case, i don’t think any vegetarian guests will be attending my wedding, but veggies are neutral and light).

pad thai is awesome. if you’re afraid it’s too “exotic” for your guests, just have some sort of “regular” foods to compensate :) you never know, people may be willing to try more than you’d think!

I think it’s your wedding, and unless you’re having something really unusual (which you aren’t) then pick what you want. It’s only one night, and it’s supposed to be about you, so eat what you love!

Another idea- I’ve never seen it done but I love the idea of “make your own” stations.
Make your own mac & cheese with pasta, different cheeses, toppings (bacon, tomatoes, onions, bread crumbs, maybe some grilled chicken pieces for those that want it?, etc.).
Make your own mashed potatoes or baked potato (all the normal fixin’s).
Make your own grilled cheese (diff breads, cheeses, and other add ins- salami, bacon, avocado, tomato, onions, pesto spreads, etc.)
Make your own pizza- anything/everything you can think of, including different base sauces (red, BBQ, pesto)

Another unique idea- What about breakfast for dinner? French toast, waffles, eggs benedict, bacon, fruit cups, oatmeal, etc.?

My FH is diabetic, as is my FFI and we have several vegetarians on the A-list as well. I am torn between what WE want and making sure guests will be comfortable, satisfied, etc. because we also have a weakness for the exotic when it comes to food.

Because we are having a summer wedding, we are trying to keep the food a little on the lighter and obviously healthier side but truly, if people don’t like something we’re offering - they don’t have to eat it- haha!

We will be hosting three mini buffet tables to additionally encourage mingling.

Our tenative menu is:

Table 1
Buffalo & Pulled Pork Sliders, Fresh Hummas with Sun-Dried Tomato and Herbs (from my garden!) with Pita Triangles, and a variety Finger Sandwiches, tbd.

Table 2
Personal-sized Macaroni au Gratin with locally-made Flagship cheese and a variety of stir-ins so each guest can customize to their taste! Such as bacon, carmelized onions, cherry tomato salad (also from my garden), maybe mushrooms, etc.

Table 3
All of the yummy sides- a fruit & veggie waterfall, garden-fresh green salad with Mr. D’s ‘famous’ vinaigrette, and his latest creation; Tuna, Beet (fresh) & Peppercini (also fresh, if I can get ‘em to grow in time up here) Salad (oooh sooo good!), which btw, is beautifully colored with lime green & purple- reminds me of exotic orchids…

Desert
Old-Fashioned Buttermilk White Cake with Ambrosia Buttercream frosting and blackberry jam filling
Groom’s Cake: Flavor tbd, but Mr. D loves mocha.

The best wedding food I ever had was at a wedding at a Moroccan restaurant. It was the couple’s favorite place to eat, and after the ceremony everyone sat down to a family-style 7-course dinner. I remember some great couscous with lamb, a whole chicken baked in pastry, baklava and mint tea…. Their entire evening was based around dinner, not much dancing (although the couple did have a quick belly-dancing lesson!), so they spaced the courses out and I was satisfied, but not stuffed.

My absolute ideal meal when we came up with our menu was either hearty “New England in the fall” type of food… or a tapas-style meal made up of lots of snack-y stuff. So we’re sort of doing both - a four-course small-plate menu with two meat dishes (with veggie alternatives), butternut squash ravioli, and a salad. That way people can feel free to skip one if they’re not hungry enough or it’s not to their taste, but still come away satisfied and not too stuffed to dance and enjoy the cake!
