About Mrs. Hyena

Mom Jeans

April 11th, 2011 @ 2:00 pm by Mrs. Hyena

Mom Hyena is notorious for ruining pictures by putting her hand in front of her face. With that preface, my parents have a running joke that they use to rile me up whenever we have wedding conversations. It goes like this, every single time:

Mom Hyena: “I’m not going to the wedding if I have to be in pictures!”

H-Dad: “Well, I’m not going if I have to dance!”

Mom Hyena: “I’ll go if I can wear jeans!”

(Laughter all around)

Well, clearly, jeans will not do, so Mom Hyena and I planned to go shopping while I was in Dallas. We headed out to the mall, which is my mom’s least favorite place on earth. We trekked through J.C. Penney, Macy’s, Dillard’s, and Nordstrom with no results. The closest we came was this, from Dillard’s:

Very pretty, but she was afraid it was too fancy. Also, she’s wearing her jeans under this dress. :)

After our trek, our tootsies exhausted and our tummies hungry, we made our last stop at the bridal store where I got my wedding dress, not five minutes from home.

We could have saved a lot of time if we’d just gone there in the first place! Because I bought my dress there, I get a 15 percent discount on any other purchases we make. I think this might be a bridesmaids’ dress, technically, but it’s very appropriate anyway since Mom Hyena is cute, and she looked cute in it. :) No pictures were allowed in the bridal store, but here’s a picture of the dress in the color we ordered it in:

The salesgirl at the bridal store told us something I didn’t know, so I’ll pass it along to y’all: The mothers aren’t supposed to match the rest of the bridal party. Who knew? Instead, they’re supposed to choose a complementary color that is more neutral and season appropriate. We chose green since we’re using that as an accent color. I haven’t seen Mom Hyena this excited about a dress…well, ever! Adios, jeans!

Any other wisdom out there about picking dresses for the moms? And would anyone else’s mom wear jeans if she had the chance? :)

We had AMAZING luck at Norstrom’s for my mom’s dress. I couldn’t believe it. I think the only time she’s worn a skirt/dress since 1992 was for her own wedding to my stepdad in 1997. They are just Not Her. I assumed she would be wearing a dressy pantsuit to the wedding (fine with me).

But at Nordie’s she found not one, but THREE dresses she loved. I couldn’t believe it. And they were all on sale, so she got them all. One for the wedding, one for the rehearsal dinner, and one extra just for fun. :) Here are 2 of them - I don’t think they carry the 3rd anymore.

Dress 1, except hers will be in aubergine:

your mom is super pretty!

I guess I wasn’t really aware that she wasn’t suppose to match either. I will have to tell my mom! =) Thanks for the info!

p.s. Your mom totally does not look old enough to be your mom, BTW.

your mom is adorable! i think the dress ya’ll picked out was great. i did know though that the mom’s aren’t supposed to match the bridal party, but it’s surprising to know how many people don’t. i think it was a good idea for you to put her in your “accent color” :) good thinking!

I’m glad she found something she’s happy with! But just for the record, I love the first dress. LOL

Awwe, Mom Hyena is so cute! She’s going to look amazing in that dress :) We’re still on the hunt for Mama Seal’s dress, but we’ve got some time—thanks for the tip about the complimentary color!

Your mom is going to look great in that dress! We ended up buying my mom’s dress at the same store I purchased my wedding dress too!

The main color/bridesmaids dresses are royal blue. I put my mom in a rasberry dress that looks awesome on her. I tried to get my FMIL to do another shade of purple, or even green (also one of my accent colors), but she H.A.T.E.S. clothes shopping so much, I didn’t fight her when she found a comfortable navy blue dress.
Mom and I will literally be the only members of the bridal party not wearing some kind of blue.

My mom hasn’t threatened to wear jeans, but she does frequently mention that she will be bringing out her castenets to dance along to the DJ (and my mom has no idea how to actually play the castanets, despite owning several novelty pairs)!

My mom and I had a wonderful experience dress shopping. The most important thing to me was that she felt beautiful in her dress. We ended up finding a beautiful gold dress. Gold is one of our accent colors.

Dillards was where my mom, grandmother and aunt found their wedding gowns. Too funny that even with a formal dress on, your momma is wearing jeans!!

@toshella: I know, right?!
@mightywombat: My aunt is absolutely HORRIFIED at the idea my mom might wear jeans to the rehearsal dinner. I say, who cares, as long as she’s there!
@Damselfly: She really liked it too, but we’re having a mid-day cocktail affair, and it was just too formal and heavy.
@Miss Horseshoe: Haha! Family really knows how to rile us brides up!

Your mom is cute and her dress will look great on her too, yay for you both. I am going to match dd’s bm’s colors (black) but they will be in short dresses and mine is long and I’ll also have a little bolero or shawl for more color too during the ceremony and pics. So hopefully, I won’t look like a social nube in her pics. haha

Your mom is going to look great in that dress! My mom wouldn’t wear jeans, but she’s definitely nervous about getting dressed up for the wedding. :)

I didn’t know that, either!! I’ll have to tell my mom. She’s certain she had to wear brown because the bridesmaids are… but doesn’t like it! Hooray for solutions!
