His Ball and Chain

April 11th, 2011 @ 11:38 am by Mrs. Cinnamon Bun

And I don’t mean this kind:

What’s that on your foot, honey?

We visited the basement of Capital Iron in Victoria over Christmas, and I couldn’t resist. BTW, if any Victoria brides don’t know about the basement, GET YE THERE NOW! It’s an amazing assortment of really random vintage things (mostly nautical, but not all), including this ball and chain. Sadly, the ball and chain wasn’t for sale.;)

Tungsten (he’s a lighting guy, so it’s very appropriate!) and rose gold, by Kevin John.

But anyway, this post is about Cinnamon Buns’ wedding ring! It came in at last! It has come in before though… we got his finger sized when we started my custom ring process. When we went back to pick up my ring, we ordered his, and because we were talking to a different member of staff that day, the new guy wanted to check that the ring size we had written down was right. The size he came up with after putting Cinnamon Buns’ fingers in their measurers was 7.5. The first employee we’d talked to had said he was an 8. Now what? We decided to order the 7.5 ring, because you don’t want your ring to be loose, right? Well, that was too tight. So it got sent back, and the size 8 got shipped in.

We both went to the store to pick up his ring, and when he tried it on it was…too loose. We thought it might be because his fingers were cold, so we walked around the mall, held on to a hot tea mug, and hoped it was the right size. The lady in the store said not to put it away when we got home, but to wear it for a couple days to make sure it was the right size. He gets to wear it? Before the wedding?! I sneakily tried mine on when Cinnamon Buns wasn’t home when it was in our house! I didn’t wear it! But then again, mine fit me perfectly.

Cinnamon Buns wore the size 8 for a few days, and after a day and a half we almost thought it was the right size, then he went to wash his hands in the bar and it popped right off. He saved it, luckily, but that shook our confidence. The next morning, shampooing his hair, it almost popped off again. It was the right size in the morning, after wearing it all night, but during the day it did get pretty loose. And as he works with his hands, showers, and washes his hands regularly, too loose is only a recipe for a lost ring.

We’re not sure what the next step will be—this ring company doesn’t do quarter sizes. I’m wondering if we should take the 7.5 home for a 2 day test drive, but he said that when he put that one on in the store it didn’t come off until they soaped up his hands and pulled really hard, which does sound too tight. We’re heading to the jeweler again soon to get this sorted. We both really like the design, so we’re hoping something can be worked out and we don’t just have to find a totally new ring.

How easy was fitting your/your FIs ring?

My fiance just ordered a Tungsten ring from Amazon – it was such a deal :)
He was pretty easy to fit, though, a perfect size 9.

We had a similar problem with sizing. Our store told us that we could order an 8 and have it sized down in quarter sizes, if necessary. We haven’t tried yet, though. Maybe see if it’s possible with yours?

You know, we kind of had the same issue. I was pretty annoyed when the store sized him wrong though. But whatever, it’s all fixed now.

I hope you get to keep the design! Mr. T also has a tungsten ring, and we have the same problem. He ended up going with a 7.5 because the 7 was uncomfortably tight, but his ring also pops off when he’s washing his hands. Blast not having quarter sizes!

Are they not able to do quarter sizes? I had to get my ring sized to a 4.75 so I know that at least with certain types of rings quarter sizes are possible so I would go with smores on this one

That’s a gorgeous ring, CB! The Sealman plans on purchasing a tungsten ring, so I appreciate the head’s up about this (so I can be sure to purchase from somewhere with a simple exchange policy). That sounds frustrating for you and Mr. CB…can’t say I have much advice, but I’ll send some good luck your way ;)

My FI needs a size 11.5/12 ring. Not sure which one to get though. We’re running into the same problem – 11.5 may be too tight but the 12 may fall off.

I don’t know this for sure, but I feel like there has to be some sort of extra lining or something that can be added to the inside of the ring for a snugger fit on the size 8!

That stinks that you can’t get quarter sizes (that’s what we had to do with my ring). Hopefully you guys can get it worked out!

ooooh, loooove tungsten!

But… our reasons are purely fictional. Well, they’re based in our fantasy world we write and game in, anyway.

My ring, piece of cake. My Fi’s ring…. not so much. His fingers kinda do the “swell and shrink” thing, so he’s always got a problem with rings, lol.

I know he’ll wear the ring as much as possible, but if it’s not constant, I’m not worried. He loves his ring, but he works at a place when if the ring is “different” you have people wanting to see it. Including the mentally ill patients…. Sooo, not always a good thing, lol.

Very cool ring. We found Mr. Crown’s ring quite by accident…and on clearance of 70% off. Couldn’t pass it up. Cha-ching! (Giggling over the look on Mr. C. Bun’s face!)

i love his ring! it’s really nice. hmm what about trying a 7 3/4? maybe that won’t be as tight as the 7 1/2 but not loose like the 8. hopefully you find the perfect size for him too.

ps…i like to sneak my ring on occasion too when my mr. is gone. it’s perfectly healthy ;)

My H was between sizes too and went with the bigger one, which was perfect when it was warm but loose when it was cold. Well, it fell off in the water a week before our six month anniversary, and we didn’t get it insured yet. Yeah…. make sure that fits well.

Because it is tungsten, it can’t be sized like a normal ring, sadly, otherwise we’d just get the 7.5 stretched to 7.75!

Windex works like a charm for getting a too-tight ring off! Our jeweler used it on me when I was shopping for bands. I was more panicked that I had a ring on I didn’t like… not that an unpaid-for one was stuck on.) As a side note, my ring is more difficult to get on in the AM.

No quarter sizing sucks.

That said… MY ring gets too loose when I wash my hands. I make sure to curve my fingers under. I never wear it in the shower. I never wear it to wash dishes. But, in general, my ring is not too loose. Sometimes it’s so tight I can’t even get it off (and I don’t sleep with it on for that reason–fingers swell at night). My fingers shift that much. A too-loose ring is preferable to a too-tight one IMO. I’ve had too-tight and my finger feeling like it had a tourniquet on it. Not fun.

Sure wish you could get the quarter size, though. That really does sound like the ideal size–and it’s a lovely ring.

Wow. Doesn’t seem like a half size would make such a difference! Hope you figure it out.

Ours wasn’t too bad. Mr. H’s finger fit perfectly into the sample! That’s a huge bummer about not being able to get a quarter size though. I hope there’s a happy ending to this story!

My fingers do the shrink-and-swell thing, too. I second the windex suggestion. I don’t sleep with my engagement ring on, so in the morning I run my knuckle under cold water for 15-30 seconds, 2 squirts of windex and a wiggle and its on. It took a little getting used to (I’m much better at getting it on and off now than the first few tries) but I’m much happier knowing the thing isn’t going anywhere.
Also, I never used to wear rings and it turns out I’m a huge ring-fiddler. Its really good that I can’t pop it on and off by accident–I’d be sure to drop it.
