Dressing the Groom

April 12th, 2011 @ 3:39 pm by Ms. Gazelle

When I was a little girl dreaming of my wedding (come on, you know you did it too), I used to imagine that my groom would look something like this on our big day:

I love the British morning suit with tails! I think it has something to do with the fact that I grew up in England and it was the popular thing to wear at the time. Times change, though, and a morning suit does not go with the style of our wedding (not to mention the time of day).

Mr. Gazelle has a pretty distinct idea of what he wants to wear on our wedding day. Something along the lines of a three-piece suit.

Mr. Gazelle wants to use our wedding as a reason to invest in a great suit. I think that is a fantastic idea, as we don’t want our wedding to be formal with tuxes. Plus a well-tailored suit will be something he can use for years to come. This past weekend Mr. Gazelle went to scope out suits at two different stores—Harry Rosen and Holt Renfrew—and it turned out to be a really informative shopping trip.

Mr. Gazelle learned that he can’t buy a suit off the rack. He has a pretty broad chest, slim waist, and long arms. Finding a jacket that will fit his chest but be nicely tailored everywhere else would be next to impossible. An unfeasible amount of alterations would be required, and it likely still wouldn’t look well fitted. Instead he is going to have to go with a made-to-measure suit. His measurements will be taken, a base pattern will be chosen that fits closest to his measurements, and it will be altered to him specifically. Both stores recommended that he order his suit early in the year, as that is when lighter-weight fabrics for the spring will be out.

Of course this brings up another “a-ha.” Even if we had wanted to go with tuxes, it would have been next to impossible to rent a tux that would have fit him well. So while this is a more expensive option for Mr. Gazelle, this is going to be the most photographed day of his life and he wants to look sharp in a well-fitting suit. As the night goes on, he can take the suit jacket off and still look dashing and handsome in his vest.

Did your hubs decide to go with a suit or a tux?

I love this post Miss G!! You (and your to-be hubby) make such a good point about investing in a nice suit. I think FMIL wants tuxes, but I think a nice suit would be just perfect.

My question for you is: are you having a wedding party? How will the other guys match Mr. G’s suit? I guess that is what I am confused about!

Mr D is similar: he really needs a medium (38-40) TALL. Pretty scarce. He was going to wear the suit he already had but found a 3-piece (he really wanted a vest) one clearance at JC Penney that actually fit much better. Taking his guys back to buy them one too.

@organicgal: That is a great question and one that I’m not sure that we’ve fully answered yet. Mr. G’s suit is going to be a dark grey stripe. He’s going shopping with his GM tomorrow to scope out grey suits as both the GM and the BM both would like to purchase suits instead of renting something. I don’t think we are going to expect them to match perfectly. Hopefully the two guys will be able to purchase a similarly toned suit. They will have matching shirts, ties and socks so they will coordinate! When Mr. G and I first talked suits he didn’t care if one wore grey, the other wore black and someone else wore blue so….we’ve come a long way!

Mr. Tartlet also went with a bespoke suit. He was dead set on a three-piece, and that combined with his “God awful” measurements (according to one tailor) set us down the made-to-measure track!

Love that first photo with the contrasting morning coat and vest!

@Damselfly: Awesome that he found what he was looking for that fits well and was on clearance too!

@Miss Tartlet: “God awful” measurements…I don’t think Mr. G quite got that wording but it was pretty similar. Can’t wait to see how Mr. T looks!

Does anyone know of a nationwide (Men’s Warehouse-type) store that rents suits? We want our groomsmen to wear suits (not tuxes) but I’d like them to be pretty uniform. My understanding is that neither Men’s Warehouse or Joseph A. Bank rents regular suits. Ideas??

Made-to-measure was basically invented for guys with a big drop (broad chest/slim waist), but it’s by far the best choice no matter what your measurements. I’m a 38R, which is about as common as it gets in the men’s suit world, but I still have trouble finding stuff I like off the rack so it’s MTM all the way!

My husband wore a morning suit (aka stroller) for our April 2nd 10:30 am wedding ceremony and 11:00 reception. A tux would have looked funny in the morning, and he was adverse to wearing just a suit. He looked particularly spiffy. I do like the three piece suit . . .

The linen suit will look nice on Mr. G! We decided to go with the classic tux. Mr. H wanted to be fancy. :)

My FI went with a 3-piece black pinstripe suit from JC Penney… His groomsmen (and best man) are just wearing the vest and pants of the suit. A couple of them got the jacket to complete the suit, but won’t be wearing the jackets for the wedding :)

We’re going the tux route. If we weren’t having such a formal affair, I’d totally recommend Mr. S buy a suit—it just makes sense! Why not invest in something that he’ll actually use again? You Gazelles are thinkers! ;)

Mr. PaC is wearing a suit he purchased for the wedding with the intention of wearing it again and again.

Jos A. Bank in the US rents out suits and tuxes now–and allows the men to purchase at a discount if they so choose. We decided to go with them recently– FI will by his tux, groomsmen mostly plan to rent.

So glad you are talking about this! I am working on a post about dressing the groom- trends, styles and how important it is for the groom to look his best.

The FH is also buying a custom suit for the wedding. We are looking at it as an investment rather than a wedding purchase.
