Mrs. Hippo's Picture
Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).
About Mrs. Hippo

To be honest, I didn’t really care so much about the something old, something new, blah, blah. I just didn’t think it was that big of a deal. Uber-traditional I am not. But during the planning process, I had several people (mostly married women) ask what my old, new, borrowed and blue items were. I would say something like, “Well….my dress is new. And my shoes are blue. And…ummmm…er…well…” I got nothin’. I’m not sure if at some point I really wanted to have something old, new, borrowed, blue or I just gave up trying to fight the establishment, but a couple of months before the wedding I figured it was time to get serious if I was going to follow through with the tradition.

I have one living grandmother, but she isn’t able to travel much anymore so I knew for quite some time that she wasn’t going to be able to make it to the wedding. Hoping that she might be able to supply something for the festivities and hence be there in spirit, I sent her a handwritten letter asking if she might have something I could borrow that could fall into the old category. I had no idea that just by asking, an amazing family heirloom would be unveiled.

After hearing about my request, my aunt brought this handkerchief embroidered with my great-grandmother’s name (in blue no less!) to Dallas, making it my old, borrowed and blue item.

Old, Borrowed and Blue - All In One! : wedding dallas traditions Handker041 handker04
Please excuse the crappy cell phone camera pic

I honestly had no idea that this beautifully embroidered, wafer-thin handkerchief even existed in our family…neither did Mama Hippo. I suppose there is something to be said for reaching out the old-fashioned way.

What are you using for your “something old”?

Oh, Mrs. Hippo, I love this post! How incredibly special. I’m sure it means a lot to you, and to your grandmother and aunt. I think stuff like that is *so* special. :)

I’m hoping to wear my mother’s veil. I’ll take it off the hat/headpiece that was so popular back then! But I’ll put it on a comb, and use it. It’s a fingertip mantilla veil, which I think will suit my simple wedding dress. :) So special!

Sounds like you got a wonderful old, borrowed and blue item!

I am planning on using my grandmother’s locket as my something old. It has a picture of my grandmother and grandfather in it so it will be like they are there with me.

I am glad everything worked out well for you :)

xoxo

That’s a lovely something old, blue, and barrowed! My grandma sent me some trimmings from her wedding dress. She still has it - 60 plus years later! She trimmed a little piece out of the neck of the dress with some lace attached and a few satin covered buttons. It’s my most prized possession for the wedding. I’m going to have my seamstress sew them into my dress so they will be with me the entire day. Grandmas are amazing. Enjoy your treasure!

Wow, so nice of your grandma, being there in spirit. I don’t have all mine yet, I have a saphire engagement ring so that’s my something blue, my friend is lending me two veils so that’s my something borrowed. My dress is a sample so it that old or new? And maybe new shoes? Oh, my hair flower is new :)

Something old is the only thing I haven’t figured out! I’ve got some time though. As for the others… new is my dress, borrowed is my MOH’s chapstick (not as weird if you knew how much the two of us LOVE chapstick), and blue will be my toenail polish.

What a sweet story! Antique hankies seem to be quite the trend right now too. I borrowed a floating pearl necklace for my wedding (my old and borrowed), wore a blue garter and my dress was my “new” item.

That’s very sweet :) I have no clue what my something old, borrowed and blue will be, but I hope it’s something even as remotely touching as yours!

What will you do with the hanky?
My borrowed is also an heirloom hanky and I have no idea what I’m supposed to do with it…

@KatelynMarie: I held mine around my bouquet stems and used it to wipe away tears. Well… I didn’t really cry on my wedding day, but I did use it to wipe lipstick off my hubby after our kiss!
