Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

Allow me to tell you the story of how the Snow Cones went and got themselves engaged.

The set-up: Mr. Snow Cone said he would be visiting me at Notre Dame on the weekend of April 16th…which I bought without a second of hesitation. He then told two of my best friends at ND about his plan to surprise me by visiting on April 9th and popping the question. (Admittedly, at this stage in our long-distance relationship, every time we saw each other could be proposal day, at least in my mind. With that being said, I was actively doing my best to not read too much into things and get my hopes up for no apparent reason. Fortunately, Mr. Snow Cone’s plan to come a week early gave me literally no reason to think that April 9th would be the day. Good work, Snow Cone!) He enlisted their help to pull the whole thing off, a request they gladly helped with—who doesn’t love an opportunity to sneak around and lie to a close friend?!

BM E concocted the surprise-proposal attack plan. The cover story was that my sophomore quad, which included BM E and BM B, would have a dinner date on April 9th, as one last big girls’ night out before graduation. We all agreed to make an effort to gussy ourselves up so we could take some pictures at dinner, too. During this whole “dress cute for pictures” conversation, I happily nodded along. I even made a mental note about the dinner date and the attire expectations. And then I promptly forgot about the whole plan…until BM B showed up at my door, ready for dinner. This is what she found when she swung open my door:

While I thought she was a tad overdressed for a low-key girls’ night out, she seemed to think my grungy clothes and greasy hair didn’t quite meet the “dress cute for pictures” order. BM B pretty much ordered me into the shower immediately so as to “clean up for the reunion dinner.” So, I dutifully showered and got cleaned up as quickly as possible. After I finished getting ready, the four of us finally headed out to leave for dinner. As we were leaving my all-girls dorm, I couldn’t help but notice a peculiar-acting group of girls crammed into the only window in the hallway. But, being the super-cool almost-graduated senior that I was, I just figured they were being typical weird freshmen and thought nothing of it. Let’s just say that as I exited the building, it quickly became clear what had attracted their attention from the window: Mr. Snow Cone, standing outside with a huge red rose.

This is the point in time where everything gets a bit blurry, but I definitely remember him pulling me aside while I was loudly and incredulously demanding why he had shown up a week early. He took that opportunity to interrupt me with a marriage proposal (one of the few times I haven’t minded being interrupted). As soon as his one knee hit the ground, I heard one huge, collective squeal from my dormitory…turns out that about 50 girls had squeezed into any window they could find to watch this whole thing go down. How did so many of the girls in my dorm know about this big moment? Well, it turns out that when you’re not prepared to go to the “reunion dinner” and you need an extra 35 minutes to make yourself presentable, it gives your soon-to-be fiance a good amount of time to pace about, rose in hand, waiting to ambush you. After the combined shock of seeing Mr. Snow Cone there in the first place and seeing him there with a ring in hand, I exuberantly yelled a big fat “yes!” Here’s a photo to make you feel like you were standing right there, watching it all happen:

I had a ring on my finger, a new fiance, and a throng of adoring fans. I thought all of the surprises for that day had come and gone. Little did I know…(to be continued!)

Were you completely caught off-guard by your SO’s proposal?

I had no clue! We got engaged on December 3, 2010 (his birthday) and the entire day he had been acting like a complete butthead! I couldn’t believe how he was acting, even after I gave him his gift (which was not cheap!) Anyways, that night we went to a place called Santa’s Wonderland in College Station, TX with another couple (he knew I had to have pictures of our engagement, it was my one ‘request’) and while we were on a carriage ride throughout this gorgeous display of Christmas lights he asked the driver to stop for a minute & he got down on one knee! *That was the most surprising moment of my life!* It was so sweet he could barely talk, and ended up just saying “will you be my wife?” all I could say was “are you serious?? really?! you mean it? are you serious?” Then I couldn’t stop smiling.
:)

Oh & the day before he’d actually gone to my parent’s house and asked my dad’s permission & even showed my mom, dad, and brother the ring!

That is such a great picture! I so wish I had a photo of our engagement but we were basically solo on a Lake Tahoe beach. I did however take a picture of the rock we were sitting on when he asked.

Fabulous story and one that you’ll always remember and will make you smile throughout your marriage!!!

I was completely shocked when my hubby proposed to me, even though we’d been talking about it for months. He proposed a few days before my birthday (to surprise me, as we’d discussed that my birthday would be a good time to announce an engagement). He took me out for a romantic drive along the river to look at the stars. We got out of the car and were snuggling and enjoying the view when all of a sudden we heard gun shots somewhere nearby. We leaped into the car and I was yelling at him to “get the he!! out of here” when he pulled the ring out from under the seat and quickly explained why he’d brought me out into the middle of no where. After a brief moment of shock, I said “YES! Now lets get out of here!”. We still laugh at that story, 16 years later.
