Shopping Scores!

Perhaps my vision of milk-glass bud vases might not be so out of reach after all. Milk glass is pretty prevalent in different antique stores around here, but the prices can vary widely.

Mr. Gazelle and I were up in Edmonton, poking around the Old Strathcona Antique Mall. This place is an amazing mecca of treasures! The building is over 27,000 square feet over two levels with a ton of different booths inside. Each booth belongs to a different vendor, so there is a ton of variety over the whole store. There was a vintage Burberry coat for a steal of a price…unfortunately, it wasn’t flattering. Old typewriter? Old wedding dress? A ceramic bar-tool holder that says “Avoid hangovers—stay drunk”?

I found two vases there that started it all—a beautiful trilled-glass vase to hold a bunch of flowers and a hobnail bud vase. Walking into the room and seeing the vases with fresh flowers totally puts a smile on my face.

Pretty, right?

So today I scoured eBay and kijiji, plus I popped by Goodwill with some success. The best deal? Two vases for $1.99 each from Goodwill! Plus I found a bird cage for $4.99 that would make a great card box. Score!

Hopefully I can find a few more vases for a good deal. I’ll keep a few favourites after the wedding but then likely sell the rest, so it wouldn’t be an entirely sunk cost.

Do you have any suggestions for places I can find milk glass at a good price?

I would recommend “Tuesday Morning Store” but not sure if you have that in your area :)

When it gets nice outside try garage sales! Also ask around friends of parents and grandparents are milk glasses gold mines. Be patient I have been collecting for years and sometimes I wont see any for a while then BOOM I find all kinds of neat ones.

You made some great finds so far!

xoxo,
Shana

p.s. I used milk glass at my shower, come visit my blog and see if you would like, there should be more photos up in a day of two too!

It is a little more expensive than Goodwill but I found some on Ebay and Etsy. I found a collection on Craigslist as well.

We are using milk glass and mostly hobnail. I have had the same experience as you, the prices really vary. We have had the best luck at goodwill, salvation army, value world type stores. I also put all my friends and family on look out duty. They go to those types of shops near their house and we almost have all the ones we need. I love the varations in size, shape and style. Good Luck

Value Village!

Not sure if you’ve got those in Alberta, but they’re all over Ontario and the East Coast. I was planning to use milk glass before I switched my focus to tarnished vintage silverplate, and I found the majority of my milk glass pieces there. I would go on a Value Village run every day off and come home with at least 3 or 4 pieces each time, and usually under $3.00 ea.

Happy hunting~!

I agree with PP — Definitely yard sales! Also… My church has a ton of milk glass bud vases. I wonder if a church (or another place that does regular dinners, like a moose lodge or something) has some that you could borrow. I had looked at milk glass because I love the style, but it’s not special to me because I’ve seen it at so many church dinners growing up :) But, I would check sources like that in your area, where you can just borrow them.

I know a few sellers on Etsy have sets of milk glass vases.
