Doggie on Board

April 13th, 2011 @ 12:45 pm by Mrs. Panther

Hey, y’all! I know you already thought I was crazy for deciding to move into a new place three months before the wedding, but guess what! I’m even crazier than you thought!

Yesterday, we brought home our latest bundle of love—a puppy!

Her name is Macy, and the shelter said she’s a Sheltie/Cavalier King Charles spaniel mix. When we asked our vet what he thought, he shrugged and said, “Sure, maybe!” So really, she could be anything.

The facts are these: she’s about seven months old, she weighs 23 pounds, she likes our cats and she’s not housebroken yet. Yikes! Also, she is allowed on the couch, but not the bed. That was an arbitrary decision.

We’ve had her for almost 24 hours now, and she is a lot of work, but not as much as I expected. The house-training is going to require some patience, but we’ll get there, and she hasn’t been destructive at all. I’m not saying I’ll necessarily be able to construct envelope liners without her getting her little nose involved … but maybe she’ll sit quietly in her crate while I do so. She only seems to want to lay in her bed for very brief periods of time, at this point.

Still, are we nuts for getting a dog two weeks after moving into a new house and three months before getting married in another state? Yes, of course! But I just feel like we’re getting so close to where we want to be. I kind of just want to hurry up and get there, instead of prolonging the journey, you know? Once we’re married, we’ll be all settled into our new house with our new addition—one big happy family.

We’ve just got to get this whole wedding thing taken care of, then we’re good to go!

Anyone else make major changes right before the wedding? Anyone have any genius house-training tips? Or puppy tips in general?

Re: puppies - if you find out she likes to chew, Kongs filled with peanut butter (and frozen) or neverending treat balls are LIFESAVERS :)

What a cute addition to the family! :)

Puppy Tips:
If she likes to chew on things she’s not supposed to, Bitter Apple spray works wonders (the good stuff, not the generic). Just don’t get it on your hands and touch your mouth/lips… YUCK!

If she barks, get a bark collar from a good pet store… but not the shock kind. Ours spray a lemony-fresh scent. It totally works. Now all we have to do is show him the bark collar and he quits barking.

Best (and cheapest) treats: Cheerios! Our vet said they are so much healthier than the fat/calorie-loaded treats designed for dogs.

When I need to get something done (and need to distract the dog), rawhides work best.

Hope this helps!

I got a pup in December, and we are getting married AND moving in May. I’ll tell you what, I sure will appreciate the quiet after the wedding. Also, 3 months gives you a lot of time to bond. I’ve only had mine for 3 months, and she’s already my best bud, excepting FI of course.

We are thinking about rescuing a doggie this summer, which will be just before the big day! I think it will just add more fun to the mix!

BTW - I think she has some Corgi in her! :)

My dog was very nervous and not housebroken when I got her, and I made a mistake early on by scolding her when I caught her peeing inside. Then she was afraid to pee in front of me and would do it when/where I wasn’t watching, which meant that since I’m watching her while we go on walks, she wouldn’t do her business outdoors. Yikes!

I remedied the situation one night by going on a massive four-hour walk, and when she finally did pee outside I congratulated her like it was the most exciting thing that ever happened. That made it click for her, and she’s been perfectly housetrained ever since!

Once Macy “gets it” she will get it for good.

Macy is sooooo cute. Looks like she may be a Sheltie/Shiba Inu cross. I have a Shiba and he is so loving and smart.

I think she looks like a Corgi/Border Collie mix, to me, but who knows! Haha, she’s soooo cute! I want a puppy :3 congratulations on the furry little addition to your family!

She is adorable! Congratulations! I have 5 months until my wedding and my fiance and I just adopted a second dog to be a companion for our first.
Crate training definitely works. It’s what we used to train our first and what we are currently doing with our puppy.

So cute! We are also moving before our wedding and considering getting a dog. I don’t understand the point of waiting post-wedding. It’s just one day of your life, no need to pause any decisions before it gets here.

You’re not crazy at all! Having a puppy is the best. You come home after a hard day and after five minutes of playing and snuggling with her you don’t remember you had a bad day at all.

We got a puppy in December and while I love him, there are plenty of times I wish we had waited.

Right now he’s in the jerky teen puppy stage, about 5 months and 60# of golden retriever-ness. 88% of the time he’s a good boy, the other 12% leaves me wondering how to get rid of him without anyone asking questions ;)

What works for him is BIG braided bully sticks (anything else he swallows whole) or a little bit ofpeanut butter hidden in a rubber type chewy Greenie toy. Either of those will keep his attention for a while.

We’re still working on housetraining as well, he goes outside just fine, but he’s not good at TELLING us when he needs to go, so unless we take him like ever 60 minutes in the evening he’ll pee indoors.

Good luck :)

Having a puppy totally makes you feel like a family! (Before kids, anyway).. And I agree - I think she definitely has some Corgi in her!

A tip that’s worked for my family: we had a jingle bell on the back door for a Christmas decoration, and our old dog must have heard it every time we let him out, because one day he just started ringing it on his own with his nose. We did the same thing with our current dog, just ringing the bell as we let him out and eventually he just started doing it himself (which is saying a lot because Murphy isn’t the smartest).

Anyways, P! Looove Macy! So cute!! Mr. G and I will be moving into a (town) house about a month after the wedding and I all ready have doggy dreams. I can’t wait.
