Mrs. Magic's Picture
Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!

What’s a Moravian?

April 13th, 2011 @ 9:43 am by Mrs. Magic

I am!

OK, first let me start by saying that I have not attended church regularly since I was in high school. So, one could say I am “lapsed.”

I’m not trying to pretend I am more churchy than I am. But, I was raised in the Moravian faith at Covenant Moravian Church in Wilmington, North Carolina. Our church was, and still is, a pretty small church, and there are not many Moravians in the world. When I tell people I am “Moravian,” they normally think I said “Mormon,” or they wonder why they have never heard of the country of Moravia before. It’s part of the Czech Republic, nowadays, see?

Even though I would not say that Mr. Magic and I are really religious, well, we do need someone to marry us, and I do identify pretty strongly with the Moravian faith, even if I am a lapsed member. Here’s why!

1. Moravians are, in most scholars’ opinions, the oldest Protestant religion. They joined and started doing their thang about 100 years before Martin Luther came along. They broke away from Rome and the Catholic Church because they thought individuals could have a “justification by grace through faith alone” or, rather, they didn’t need a middle man to help/interfere with their relationship with God. Also, they thought indulgences were whack. I also agree that everyone should and can have their own personal relationship with God, so I’m down with the beginnings of the Moravian church.

2. The Moravian motto is “In essentials unity; in non-essentials, liberty; and in all things love.” Simple, to the point, dunzo. That basically means that all Moravians have to believe in the big things, such as God and Jesus Christ and the Bible, but each Moravian has the freedom to make up their mind about other things, such as how to worship. And we’re all about loving everyone and super into diversity! Yay! I can’t be down with a church that is not open minded and willing to change with the times.

3. The Spirit of the Moravian Church. There are a few things that are really important to Moravians, and these things are also really important to me!

  • Simplicity - They say focus on the big picture, that God is good, and don’t worry so much about the details. They are also into genuineness and practicality. Sounds good to me.
  • Happiness - Sounds good. Check!
  • Unintrusiveness - We realize others have different but equally awesome religions, and we aren’t trying to steal you away from your beliefs.
  • Fellowship - Hanging out with kindred spirits is fun!
  • The Ideal of Service - Helping others is a good thing.

4. Moravian Culture. Moravians have a Candle Tea once a year, where we open up the church to the community so folks can come and learn about our history and sample our awesome wares! We dress up like old-timey Moravians, see?

This is my brother and me—aren’t we so cute? I’m guessing this is, like, 1987. Fun fact: back in the day, Moravian girls and women wore different colored ribbons on their caps based on their age or marital status. Little girls would wear red, unmarried women would wear pink, married women would wear blue, and widows would wear white.

Then we show people how to make Moravian stars…

Bake them some fresh Moravian cookies…

I like spice cookies the best, then sugar. Anything else (lemon, chocolate, etc.) is not what I grew up on and therefore too newfangled for my tastes!

Feed them some Moravian sugar cake…

It’s so yummy and addictive.

Then we show them our beeswax candles, which of course we made ourselves because we are so crafty like that!

And finally, we let them try some of our delicious spiced tea!

Yum, no?

In short, Moravians are pretty chill and diverse, into loving others, and also into eating, drinking, and lighting things such as stars and candles up. So, the pastor from my childhood church is going to marry us. Hooray!

How did you decide who would perform your ceremony?

Thank you for sharing info about your religion! I love learning about different faiths.

My fiance and I both were born and raised Catholic but neither of us are very good at attending church, so we don’t have a “home” parish. Instead, we are getting married at the church I was baptised in and made my first communion in. We have gotten to know the priest pretty well through the pre-marital counseling sessions and we are excited to have him facilitate our ceremony.

You are part of a great community with so much history! I studied a little about 18th-century Moravians in NC, the art and traditions alone are so cool–not to mention the faith itself. Unfortunately the pic of you and your brother looks like it didn’t come through–oh no!

I’ve never heard of Moravians before, but I have to admit, you guys seem pretty cool :). I mean, I don’t think us Lutherans can make candles ;-).

So, I just wanted to comment and say that though I’m not Moravian in faith, I went to Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA! I learned so much about the faith, and anytime I tell anyone about it, they look at me like I have 2 heads. So Just wanted to say that I know exactly what you’re talking about :o)

This was really interesting to me - I used to live in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, and would go to the Moravian Book Shop all the time… but never really knew much about the religion itself. Thanks for explaining!

I have never heard of Moravians, and I’m curious to know more. Do you use the Bible as your main source of information? If so, I am a little bit confused about the changing with the times piece. The Bible hasn’t changed with the times, and neither have the rules, so what do Moravians base their beliefs upon? I’m not trying to be judgmental, so please don’t take it that way. I’m just curious!

Great post Miss Magic! I am a Moravian too! You did a great job portraying everything that we Moravians are about… I went to Moravian College and our Chaplain used to say “Keep us Moravians fat and happy…. that’s why we eat in church!”

#1: I’m kinda surprised about how few people have heard of Moravians. I’m not a Maravian, but have most definitely heard of them and am grateful for the legacy many have left behind!
#2: My dad’s a pastor (we’re non-denominational… pentecostal-ish :) haha)… So the officiant decision was SUPER easy! :)

Thanks for sharing! I know of Moravian College, but did not know it had to do with a particular religion. I have officially learned something today :)

I live in NC too, and am not a Moravian myself, but our town was settled by Moravians, so lots of the traditions are pretty common. I have a Moravian star that I hang on my front porch and its one of my favorite parts of Christmas — along wtih Lovefeast services!
