Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

Our Homestination Wedding

April 13th, 2011 @ 3:02 pm by Mrs. Snow Cone

Even before we were engaged, Mr. Snow Cone and I had pretty much decided that we would get married in our hometown of Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

We came to this decision for a couple of reasons: it’s where we met/grew up/started dating, my parents still live there, we both have a good number of friends who still consider Johnstown “home,” and we’re both super familiar with the town in general. With all of these fabulous benefits, obviously planning a wedding in our hometown would be a breeze…or so I thought.

Currently, Mr. Snow Cone and I are living in Pittsburgh, which is Johnstown’s nearest big city. It’s one of those situations where when strangers ask you where you’re from, you say “Pittsburgh” because no one really knows of Johnstown. This falsehood always seems like a good way to avoid receiving a blank stare from the other person when they realize they have no idea where the crap the town you’re talking about is located. Even though this little white lie always has the best intentions behind it, you inevitably make the mistake of meeting every single Pittsburgher in a four-mile radius, who then proceed to ask you what neighborhood you live in, and what high school you went to, and so on. And about eight seconds into that conversation, you’re totally outed as a big, fat, geographical liar-pants when you mumble, “Um, actually, I’m not from Pittsburgh. I’m from Pittsburgh-ish. Near Pittsburgh. Johnstown.” LIAR-PANTS.

Nevertheless, Pittsburgh to Johnstown—not that big of a distance. At the same time, it’s big enough to make wedding planning a bit more difficult. Somehow, this wedding has partially transformed into a destination wedding without me noticing. Mr. Snow Cone and I only get to Johnstown about once a month. I’m more interested in taking advantage of free laundry, my beloved hometown iced tea, and visiting with my parents than hopping right back into the car to scoot around town and visit photographers, DJs, florists, lighting specialists, caterers, coordinators, and the like. As a consequence, we’re doing the bulk of the planning from Pittsburgh. Instead of meeting with vendors face to face, signing contracts in person, and viewing sample photos together, I’ve had to resort to having phone meetings between grad school classes, scanning various contracts and documents, and emailing photos of other weddings I’ve found online in order to make sure everyone’s on the same visual page. Not exactly what you see in movies, but it’s what has to be in this case.

I have to keep reminding myself that it is a wedding in our hometown, fulfilling the homey, comfortable feeling of a hometown wedding we were originally going for. All of the hoops to jump through that resemble destination-wedding planning are behind the scenes. When push comes to shove and this grand affair actually takes place, all of the important people will be headquartered in Johnstown, and all of the phone calls and emails will be a thing of the past.

So, in short,

hometown wedding + destination wedding = homestination wedding!

Please tell me I’m not the only one in the homestination-wedding boat!

Hey there! We actually lived in Johnstown for a hot minute, then basically I grew up in Greensburg, so I totally feel you on saying your ‘from’ Pittsburgh! Where are you getting married at in Johnstown?

I am having a “homestination wedding”, sort of. My hometown is where we met at school (and most of the friends on the guest list will be fellow alumni, so they know the town). BUT, the only people who live there right now? My parents, an aunt and uncle, 3 cousins, and one of my brothers. The other 100 family members on the guest list will be travelling.

I live 3 hours away working on grad school, and FI lives 4 hours in the other direction just working, so I TOTALLY feel you on the emailing things back and forth front.

I can relate. We got engaged and 2 days later moved 5 states away. We’re getting married where we’re from (FL), but only make it over there every couple of months so it’s a total whirlwind of wedding planning weekends when we’re there. Most of the big stuff is picked out and I’ve now told my mom, just pick whatever, I don’t care anymore. awesome…lol

I had my wedding in my WV hometown. It was about 2 hours from where I now live, so I had a semi-destination wedding. Lots of whirlwind weekends, e-mails and phone calls. It can be done.

Would that hometown iced tea you like be Galliker’s? I was introduced to it when I went up to Johnstown to meet my BF’s family. It’s delicious!

I LOVE your wording for this situation!! We are from Cooperstown, NY and have moved about an hour and half away to the nearest large city…and of course, want to get married in our hometown. That’s when we realized just how pain-in-the-butt-far-away an hour and a half really is! Everyone on both sides of the family can’t wait for the wedding to be over so we can get back to normal visits (even my birthday weekend has turned into a hair trial/florist meeting/ceremony planning extravaganza!) Good luck with your planning!!

This post makes me glad that I can use my hand as a map of MI to point out where I’m from. ;) While our wedding isn’t in either of our hometowns, it’s far enough away from where we live that it’s a pseudo-destination event. What did people do before email?

I’ve totally been caught as a “geographical liar-pants” when trying to describe where I grew up.

Right there with you on the “homestination” wedding. We’re having our wedding in my hometown of Dearborn (right outside of Detroit). Always knew I wanted to get married back at home if I couldn’t pull off a beach wedding!

When traveling outside the East Coast, we say we’re from the Philly area. Makes it so much easier. “Delawhere?”

@kayely88: It most definitely is! I could drink diet iced tea for every meal for the rest of my life and be quite content. :)

I’m a homestinator! Added bonus of generally cheaper pricing there, as well as less sales tax.

My husband used to deliver to Johnstown all the time, and our company still does…you probably know the place…Galliker dairy? I know what you mean when you say Pittsburgh instead of Johnstown, I grew up in Philadelphia and recently moved but I still say Philadelphia because no one nows this little burb town we live in now!

Heh, homestination. Love it.

By the way, example of Candy Apple being an idiot - when I saw you were from Pitt/ Jonestown, I was like, oh, those places must be near Philly, and we could totally do a Philly meet-up, because I am so close! Because clearly, everywhere in Penn is near Philly. Then I looked at a map. Geography FAIL. I really am smart, I promise.

We’re completely having the same problem - we’re from Pittsburgh but moved to the DC area a year ago. I LOVE my hometown and there is no way I would want to get married anyplace else. But planning remotely is not easy/fun.

PS - I’m one of those ppl who would have called you out and told you that Johnstown is NOT Pittsburgh :-p Although my brothers and I always had fun going to Chiefs games when we were little. Good luck!

Good luck with your homestination!
we are having a homestination wedding (my home town) which is even more of a dot on the map than Delaware, in Georgetown, MD. One B&B for people to stay in…my city friends are very confused.
