Want to Do Vs. Need to Do

April 13th, 2011 @ 11:24 am by Mrs. Waffle

Here we are! A little under two months away and I have whittled the giant to do list from 9 months ago down to this…

Want to Do Vs. Need to Do : wedding austin 11

You can see that I divided the “to do” list into “Homework” and “Projects.” Mr Waffle asked what the difference was considering they are all tasks we need to get done.

Well, here’s the deal.

The homework is stuff I really need to do, but is difficult or boring and therefore the procrastinator in me has been putting it off. It is stuff that requires research, deep thought, typing and lengthy discussions that end in frustration. Work has been a beast lately, so any time I sit down and try to do the homework this happens…

Want to Do Vs. Need to Do : wedding austin 22

The other side is projects! Eeeeee, projects! I have been waiting to finish these for quite a while and now that the RSVPs are rolling in I can finally start. Projects put me in a good mood and recharge my battery, which is something this little lady needs right about now.

So, what’s a Waffle to do?

Obviously, I want to do projects more than homework. However, other people are depending on me to get my homework done by a certain time and projects can very well wait since their due date is the day. Do I trudge through the homework just to get it done? Should I maybe sprinkle in a dash of projects in between homework times? What would you do?

Wow. You are one organized woman. I applaud you. And I love Wafflebot! haha
I find that I can’t work unless I have some sort of gratification, so for me, homework sprinkled with projects would be the way to go. It breaks up the monotony of the homework, and you’re still getting things done with projects. Good luck!!

I always reward myself for getting through a project I don’t really want to do. As in, if I finish this homework by this time (cause if I don’t put a time frame on it, it takes me a ridiculously long time to do), I get to have fun and do this project.

Do homework for xx number of hours then give yourself a break with a fun project. That way you don’t get burned out with one or the other.

wafflebot! Yes. . .

Switch off, accomplish one homework, then reward yourself with doing one project!

And 3 weeks out, i am in the exact same boat.

You are a girl after my own heart! I am with you on Want versus Need! So you should of course do what’s best for you, but I absolutely HAVE to throw in fun with tedious or nothing would get done! And since you’re so close, obviously no one has to tell you that it needs to get done. In the end though, just remember, deep down you really love all of it :)

Wafflebot! I may or may not have actually just shreiked that in my cubicle at work.

Anyway back to the point… can Mr. Waffle(bot) help with any of the homework? I know Mr. Lox has been super good about taking homework assignments from me lately. He’s all about whatever he can do to make the weird crazy-eyed bride look go away. ;)

Your bulletin board is very cute!

You could do “1 and 1,” like finish one “homework,” then get to do one “project”…

I think if you say “I won’t do any projects until I finish ALL the homework,” your inner procrastinator might say “Well FINE, I just WON’T do projects, then I *never* have to work on homework, how about THAT…”….or is that just *my* inner procrastinator who is that grumpy ;-) .

@Miss Lox: Oh, how I wish I could give some of the homework to Waffle! Unfortunately, I just had to explain to him yesterday, for the umpteenth time, the difference between ceremony, cocktail hour, reception and send-off. He’s a lovely and incredibly intellegent human being, but sometimes he’s just so smart that he’s dumb (unless he’s just playing dumb, which is very smart). He’ll just get to do all the heavy lifting later.

we made a game out of it. i wrote everything on notecards and put them on out board in the hall. everytime one of us accomplishes something we make a big deal about who gets to put the card in the trash lol. ive been winning lately but i also went into crafter crack mode and have been staying up well past 3 am just because i cant sleep with a half finished project on the table.

you inspire me to do a checklist…I <3 checklists!

Maybe I’ll motivate myself to do the homeworks by making a really fancy checklist with lots of color.

I agree with PPs…reward yourself with a project when you finish a homework assignment!

I would use projects as your “carrot on the end of the stick” to bust through the mundane homework. A visual reward once you’ve completed a task works for me - a big fat line crossing out the item for good is always nice.
