Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

Picking a color palette was not nearly as easy as I had expected.  We finally reached common ground by agreeing on purple, but that’s really only half the battle.  Without a complementary color, if we just stayed with purple and purple only, we’d have a wedding that resembled Grimace:

…and nobody needs that.

So, Mr. Snow Cone suggested green as an accent color. I don’t know about you, but when I think of purple and green together, a certain childhood friend pops into mind:

Although I was initially reluctant to look at purple and green together, I had bombarded Mr. Snow Cone with all of my color palette suggestions over the past few weeks, so I decided it was only fair to look into his suggestion of purple and green. I am partial to a plum shade of purple, so I Googled “plum wedding palette” and came across THE BEST AND MOST HELPFUL COLOR SITE EVER.

That’s right—there’s a blog called “The Perfect Palette” that has nothing but color combinations and inspiration boards to let you see how various colors match up against each other in a wedding setting! Just imagine my glee at discovering that about 99% of the work of picking color combinations had already been done for me; now all I needed to do was plop down on the couch for a while, poking around this newly discovered and highly adored blog.

One of my favorite things about this site is that you can sort by color, so instead of slogging through all of the color combinations, you can get right to the meat of it. At the same time, let’s say you have three colors picked out, for sure. On this blog, you can easily scope out inspiration boards that show each of your three colors as the primary color, with the other two as the complementary tones, helping you to decide exactly how you see this color palette being applied to your individual wedding. Some of the combos have two colors, a traditional and classic approach, while some have up to five, giving you an idea of how the hues can layer on top of each other without looking like you used a clown as your wedding designer.

Mr. Snow Cone was equally impressed with this website find (I think mostly because it meant that we could stop talking about color palettes in the very near future), so we hunkered down and spent about 10 minutes looking at pictures and debating until we settled on our final color scheme: purple, light green, and gray. As of now, we’re planning to use gray as our secondary color and green as more of a tertiary accent, but either way I’m relieved we finally settled on something, not to mention totally in love with our selection.

Based on the conclusion we reached with The Perfect Palette’s help, here’s our final color-palette board:

It’s modern and traditional all at the same time, which is exactly the look/vibe that we’re going for with the entire event.  Thank goodness for unexpected website finds that make life 100 times easier!

Did you have a surprise, lucky internet find that helped with your planning problems?

We started with ivory and gold and then added some purple for interest. Some green snuck in too - it came together beautifully!

Purple and green were my colors, too! I based the color scheme off of Monet’s “Water Lilies” and ran with it, throwing in accents of light pink and white as I went along.

Hmm as much as I love Grimace, I dont think that what my wedding colours came out to be :)

MY wedding was purple and green as well. It kind of evolved from my green and brown original theme!!

You can see my wedding in Real Budgets on wedding bee :)

**great colour choice**

I love your color choices! We were going to do purple and green (our two favorite colors) but he kept referring to the wedding as “the Barney event”. LOL

I had lots of issues because our wedding is at night and most colors work great in daylight but not so much at night. At the end I found a centerpiece I loved and worked the color palette from there :P

Thanks so much for sharing that website! We finally (fingers crossed) nailed down our colors thanks to a combo I found there!

Your purple and green combination is beautiful! Like you said, a mix of modern and traditional. I feel your pain on the yellow and blue - I loved them too, but I’m a student at Pitt and my FI didn’t want to have “school colors” at our wedding!
