Color Me Happy

April 14th, 2011 @ 5:09 pm by Mrs. Pony

Wedding colors are one of the most important wedding decisions couples make. These colors show up in every aspect of the wedding and can give your wedding an overall theme and ambiance. So it makes sense that brides (…and grooms?) spend a decent amount of time and energy developing their color schemes.

Yeah. We didn’t do that.

Our colors didn’t speak to us. We didn’t have any divine inspiration. I kind of just declared what our colors would be. I love green. I also love red.

I didn’t really think this through.

Christmas overload!!! (Pony personal picture)

While I love Christmas, I don’t love it as a wedding theme. First, our wedding is going to be in September. Second, I don’t love Christmas that much. OK, I do. Just not for our wedding!

So how to pull this off? Not surprisingly, this is not a popular wedding color combination, but there are a few brides out there who have embraced this color combo:

Then I saw this on Style Me Pretty.

Proof I’m not crazy!! This was exactly what I needed to energize my wedding planning. Now that I am confident about our color scheme, I can share what I have been working on and collecting to make this whole red-and-green-but-not-a-Christmas-themed-wedding thing happen.

What do you think of the red and green color scheme? Crazy pants or awesome possums?

Did you pick a unique color scheme? Did you need some convincing that it would work?

Interesting, but awesome!! Love those escort cards, and the envelope liners.

I think if you have another color to sort of mellow the red and green out (like the brown of the envelopes, or the blue in that bunting shot), it will help smooth things out a bit :)

But I love these inspiration pics!

I really like that Birchtree image. It’s red and green, but the vibe is more “nature” than “Santa.”

I really love the red roses in the (square!) green vase. Fair warning, though, the last two pix looked like Christmas cards to me. Like Miss Candy Apple said, maybe work in some brown?

have you thought about doing a grass green and dusty rose combo? almost the same colors but a little softer and less christmas-y

I love red and green too but I think the trick is to pick the right shades for a wedding. Forest Green and Cranberry make me think Christmas… but Lime and Cherry make me think Kool-Aid or Otter Pops! Pick a fun shade and no one will think of the holidays!

I agree that you should work in a third color or use the different shade of red because it is looking a little holiday-ish. But do what you love! Its YOUR day!!! :)

I like it! I especially like the strong red with the lighter green of the limes. You could even pull in some light green orchids… check out the Grower’s Box website for the red and white wedding collection… it has red roses, white lilies, and greenery.
Good luck!

I hate to say it, but I agree that the bottom three look Christmas-y to me.

It isn’t impossible, though! Look at poinsettias, roses, etc. THEY are red and green and not at all Christmas! In fact, bouquets of roses are VERY popular!

I definitely agree a third non-holiday color will pull it together PERFECTLY! Check out the spring gardens and the nurseries. You’ll get PLENTY of ideas there!!!! :)

Glad we’re not the only ones who just randomly picked colors! Our thought process was: vineyard, leaves, grapes, wine –> green and dark red. Trying to use some pale greens and pinks to make it less grape-like, otherwise I feel too much like we’re at the grocery store :)

Our wedding colors are cherry red and lime green! We also threw in some chocolate brown too. That top pic you posted from the knot inspired my whole wedding :) So I’m obviously on board with your color scheme!

I got married with a green-red-tan color scheme! Granted, it was sage green, red-rock (more brick) red, and sand colors, because we love the southwest–but it totally worked! At least I think so!

That last picture looks more olive green to me-definitely not a Christmas color.

Here is my post-wedding inspiration board realized, if you want to see how it turned out:

(don’t know if this works; I never seem able to get links to work, but you can copy and paste if nothing else!)

interesting!!! I’m excited to see how this will come together!! I agree I think it’s all about what shades of green and red you do, and if it looks like/reminds people of Christmas, who cares?? Christmas is a happy time full of family and love, so if that’s what they get when they see your invites/decor then so be it, but I think it will turn out great either way!

I didn’t think it necessary to pick wedding colors..well that came back to haunt me quickly! So we picked the also not too popular of red and purple together. I like the idea of for green, bringing in succulents for plants. Cacti certainly don’t scream Christmas and they are pretty fun and unique.

@Lida-that sounds really close to what I want our colors to be!
@Magic-Crazypants is a good place to be, don’t you think?
@goodvoile-Thanks for sharing! Your totally pulled off what I was thinking, I love it!
@Snow Cone-Bold is one way to put it. some people call it crazy, I hope it comes together as I see it in my head, we’ll just see!
@mebless–very good point! What really matters is if we like it!
@Crown–Thanks!

Like Candy Apple, I think one of your colors needs to be the dominant (bold or dark) one for balance. Incorporating earth tones should ground it and keep it from veering toward Christmas. Love the faux bois liners.
