About Ms. Gazelle

Sparklerless Saddy McSad-Pants

April 14th, 2011 @ 2:57 pm by Ms. Gazelle

On Friday afternoon I was perusing the Brock House’s 2011 catering menu. As I skimmed over various rules and such my eyes focused in on this one:

20. DECORATING

The use of nails, staples, glue or any like material is not permitted on any walls, doors, posts, ceilings or any like objects of the Brock House. Rice, confetti, sparklers and table sparkles will not be permitted on the property. Please ask the catering department for alternative recommendations (i.e. bubbles, birdseed and flower petals).

No sparklers? That means we won’t be able to do a fun send-off and get cool pictures like this one:

Le sigh…I am so sad…

I also have a rule. Just say no to bubbles.

What are our other alternatives besides birdseed and flower petals?

1. “Yay” flags are super cute, and Mr. Gazelle is a big fan.

2. I really like ribbon wands, and they look like such an easy (and reasonably inexpensive) DIY project. Plus, visually they look great!

We know that we won’t need our photographers to stick around until we are ready to leave in the evening because there won’t be cool sparklers. I think the best way to incorporate some kind of fun “let’s wave something around in the air” idea would be to make this part of our recessional.

Since our ceremony and our reception are in the same place, this probably makes the most sense. Then I think Mr. Gazelle and I will sneak away quietly via a taxi cab when we are ready to call it a night. Um, yes, we are totally thinking of going the inexpensive route and just cabbing it back to the hotel rather than renting a fancy limo for a 10-minute drive.

What would you do? Would you DIY the “Yay” flags or would you make your own ribbon wands? And do you think the best time to break those out would be for our recessional?

I love the post title, but sad you can’t have sparklers! I vote for ribbon wands!

Sad for the lack of sparklers, but whatever you do will be amazing!! :) I vote for the ribbon wands too - they are super cute, and would look awesome for the recessional!! Love it.

I’m having a mix of both yay flags and ribbon wands. We will have about 100 guests so I am making 70 of each so people can pick one or the other or both! My FI doesn’t like the idea of men waving ribbon wands, so he only wanted the yay flags. I love the ribbon wands and didn’t want to nix them so as a compromise I decided to have both and let the guests pick.

I just wanted to throw this out there, my venue had almost the exact wording on their contract and I asked via email explaining my dream of having a sparkler exit, and they allowed it for me but I had to sign a waver stating everything would be picked up or I would incur an extra fee and I was required to have three buckets with sand for people to put their sparklers out in. I just wanted to throw that out there just in case you haven’t asked. It’s worth a shot! :) But if not, I love the wands! :D

We are going with the recessional option. We plan on staying to the bitter end of our reception. Who knows how many guests will still be left or even our photographers at that point, so we too will be making a quiet, casual exit. My venue has a no dogs policy, but I inquired further because we want our dog to be part of our ceremony. I received the same response Miss Seersucker did - sign a waiver, etc. So you should ask too…maybe they will say yes.

I love sparklers too but can’t have them either. I don’t want bubbles and decided on ribbon wands. They are super easy/cheap to make! I am going to try to make some flags to mix in with them because they are just so cute!

I am morally obligated to vote for ribbon wands as that is the choice I made when faced with a similar issue. ;)

Ribbon wands! Cheap, adorable, and reusable! (Just cut off the ribbon for other things… or keep them around your house for impromptu parades. Whatevs.)

For all of the great reasons you listed, I also vote for the ribbon wands. They will look amazing ALL day long!

Ribbon wands! And why, oh why didn’t I think of using them during our recessional? We aren’t having a send-off for various reasons, and your idea is the perfect compromise!

Can you add ribbons to your “Yay!” flags?? I would do this after/during the recessional.

There is a special place in my heart for super-fancied-up YAY signs. =)

Awwwe, no sparklers? That’s okay, Saddy McSad Pants, we can’t have them either :( BUT, I totally love your replacement ideas. I vote for a combo of both like SavannahL suggested OR Miss PaC’s suggestion of “Yay” signs being added to your ribbons! :)
