Celebratory Cigars: Classy or Nasty?

April 15th, 2011 @ 11:47 am by Mrs. Seal

Disclaimer: I am not encouraging the use of tobacco, nor am I attempting to glamorize smoking. I am very well aware of the terrifying statistics. These are just my opinions, so take them for what they are worth: not much. I am not an advocate of smoking—just a silly person getting married. :)

I’m not exactly sure when or why we started exploring the cigar bar idea—I’m not a smoker and Mr. Seal only occasionally indulges in a nice cigar. However, I do recall that the idea was met with much criticism by Mama Seal.

I really can’t blame her for not thinking the idea is as classy as I do. I mean, cigars create smoke and, well, cigar smoke is kinda nasty and dangerous! So, when she immediately thrashed the idea, I was only a little hurt. We are both pretty stubborn ladies (I guess this apple didn’t fall far from the tree), so I kept bringing the idea up…and the debates kept getting more heated. I could no longer understand what the issue was—the cigars would be smoked outside and away from guests, and I wasn’t asking her to pay for them, just to be super excited and LOVE the idea. Hehe.

Anyway, I never won that argument, but the fact of the matter is we are indeed having a station to enjoy cigars at our wedding (and I think Mama Seal is at least coming around to the idea).

For all of you critics, lemme explain why:

1. Historically speaking, cigars represent celebration—and what will we be doing at our wedding reception? Celebrating our marriage, of course!

2. Cigars give off that old-timey feel we are going for—in fact I think it helps put the “Old” in “Old San Francisco.”

I’ve got some proof…George Clooney looks pret-ty debonair and mature, eh?:

3. Some of the world’s classiest and most interesting people in the world enjoy a recreational cigar:

4. Daddio Seal smokes, and considering the amount of time and money he is investing into this wedding, why not repay him with a small token of appreciation? A designated location for him to enjoy a nice cigar with his buddies is a thought that brings me a lot of joy.

Anyhow, Brother Seal and his wonderful fiancee Maria thought the idea was so brilliant that they offered to pay for the cigar roller as a gift. I attempted to decline their generous offer, but they insisted (and seeing as how he is my eldest brother, it served me best not to argue any further).

We did some research and with little effort found a wonderful company (Oye Productions) that will provide the service and cigars we want for our reception.

Then I bought some custom matches to celebrate the occasion:

What’s your stance on cigars at a wedding? Classy or nasty?

Personally, I am not a huge fan, but hey, why not?? It’s your day! And since Daddy Seal enjoys cigars, that’s a sweet nod to him. And those matchbooks are too cute! :)

i’m not a fan of cigars (though my FI occasionally smokes one every once in a blue moon), but i say that this is your wedding and you should do it if it’s something you really want! i think if you present them in a classy way, then they’ll come off as class :)

I think it’s classy. I would totally smoke a cigar with the boys on my wedding day, even if just for the photo op!

I love a good cigar on occasion! I’d be right out there with all the guys. Oh, and that picture? George Clooney is totally the Clark Gable of our day. :)

Huge fan right here! I’ve been to two weddings where there were cigar stations - I took part in both even though I have never on any other occasion had one. Let me tell you - the photo ops are priceless. However, one little warning, cigars take quite a while to smoke - so when the gentlemen venture outside they will be outside for a while, and then miss about an hour - give or take - of all the fun going on inside! So if you are okay with the men’s absence for a period of time - then go for it!!

It’s not one for me, I wouldn’t me comfortable with anyone smoking even one cigar/ cigarette because of me. The look is classy though and I would pose with one for sure

My future hubby does smoke the occasional cigar during special events. I am not a big fan but i figure as long as it isn’t a regular thing then I am ok with it. I am sure he will have one at our wedding too.

It is really up to you and your future hubby :)

Totally classy! We’re going to have a cigar station, too… I had totally forgotten about it!

I’m with your mom. I never found smoking to be classy or attractive. They smell terrible and smoke makes me cough. I hated it even as a child.

It’s your wedding and I’m glad you’re doing what makes you happy but (get ready for an afterschool special)… smoking doesn’t make you cool.

We are totally doing it. FH and all his friends enjoy the occasional cigar. That’s what the bathroom caddies are for! Just stock them with plenty of mini mints and mouthwash. :)

I hate the smell but I do think my guy is pretty cute when he’s smoking a cigar :) His BM actually bought cigars for all the guys to smoke at the reception but then they all totally forgot!

If you love the idea, go for it! Personally I don’t mind cigars, but it wouldn’t fly at our wedding since I’ve had several family members either die of lung cancer or recently quit smoking.

My husband stealthed off during our reception to have a cigar with the guys (”I’m just grabbing a drink sweetie, i’ll be right back”). I made him put his suit in a plastic bag inside his sealed luggage in the extra room of our suite and brush his teeth before any extracurricular activities happened that night ;-)

We are totally doing a cigar bar, although we’re making it a Scotch and Cigar bar. Total debauchery for us! FI does not dance and this is a greaty way for him to celebrate “his” way. I’m doing the matches too! Very cute!

In the right environment, I think celebratory cigars can be all class! It definitely fits your theme.

While we didn’t have a cigar bar at our wedding, Mr. FF went outside with his groomsmen/friends and they all had cigars and I had zero problem with it. They were celebrating!

What a sweet gesture to Daddio Seal! I’ve never had a cigar so can’t say whether I’d go for one at a wedding. However, I’m on the prowl for a good cigar recommendation (Mr. Tartlet would like to indulge his friends and family with some at our wedding). The ones that Husky used are sold out! *shakes fist*

I love cigars! Zeb and I smoke them occasionally. Zeb’s sister had an amazing summertime wedding that had outdoor facilities. She had cigar/matches favors. We didn’t do it because of the season and there wasn’t a close spot to have them. Besides, I wanted everyone inside… dancing.

I am surprising Mr. LK and the guys with a post-reception scotch bar and a stocked humidor. The Mr. loves sitting down with the guys, smoking a cigar and drinking some Glenfidditch. I cannot think of a better surprise for him. But, like I said, this will occur after the official celebrations are over. As someone else noted, a cigar takes a long time to savor, and I don’t want the guys to be gone outside for a long period of time during the reception itself. We can do this plan because everyone is either staying at our venue (a B&B) or at a hotel that is only 1 block away.

I love Cigars. FI and I are having a cigar and scotch bar at our wedding. FI and some of our friends and family enjoy cigars and I do think it’s a nice celebratory thing to do to end the evening and socialize with a smaller group.
