Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

For better or for worse, Johnstown and the surrounding areas only have a handful of venues that matched what we were looking for, either in aesthetics, driving distance for our guests, or size to handle the crowd we’re expecting, making our reception research quite manageable.  When all was said and done, we had three realistic possibilities, all sprinkled around Johnstown.  I contacted all three sites and got some basic information about the facilities and their wedding services.  Here’s the run-down:

Venue 1: Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center, downtown Johnstown

This location would definitely be large enough for our expected guest list (and then some); plus it’s got a healthy dose of nostalgia since it also hosted the Snow Cones’ high school proms. Unfortunately, downtown Johnstown isn’t the best location for outdoor photos, as it’s cement as far as the eye can see, and the Center offers big, empty, sterile spaces that would require a lot of time and effort to really jazz up.

Venue 2: Sunnehanna Country Club, Westmont neighborhood of Johnstown

This venue has a great setting for outdoor photos and is quite familiar to my family, as we’ve been members for 20-plus years. Unfortunately, the ballroom would just fit our guest list, the decor isn’t necessarily my favorite, and some could argue that it has a typically pretentious country-club air about it.

Venue 3: The Living and Learning Center at Pitt-Johnstown, Richland neighborhood of Johnstown

This is the only venue on our short list that would allow us to bring in our own alcohol, which could save some bucks, and it’s super close to our guests’ hotel rooms. It’s not uber-conveniently located in relation to our ceremony location, and it feels very manufactured banquet-y instead of personalized reception-y (if that makes any sense).

After a bit of deliberation, we decided to actually go visit Sunnehanna Country Club. Even though Mr. Snow Cone and I had been to Sunnehanna about a bajillion times beforehand, I demanded requested that we go do an official walk-through, you know, with our “wedding eyes” on. (Hey, I figure you only get to be a bride once…which means you only get to look at potential reception venues as a bride-to-be once. I wanted to do this up right. So sue me.) Thankfully, he and my parents both “get” me and my need to plan this wedding the way a wedding “should” be planned, so the four of us traipsed off to Sunnehanna to take a gander…you know, an official gander.

Once we got to Sunnehanna, we met with Denise, the club’s wedding and event coordinator. She was super energetic, enthusiastic, interested, involved, creative, open-minded, accommodating, and the list goes on and on. I don’t think she uttered the word “no” a single time during the meeting. We brianstormed menu, decor, layout, and scheduling options for the big night, and I really felt like she was hearing as opposed to just listening, and she was eager to help us to create an awesome reception.

I have no doubt that Sunnehanna is the right spot for our reception. Just looking at pictures like these makes me want to grab a pen and starting writing down ideas for our own party:

Mr. Snow Cone and I left that meeting, discussed Sunnehanna for about three minutes, and decided it was the right location for us. I guess what it all boils down to is that we felt very…taken care of at Sunnehanna. It didn’t seem like a big money-making operation; instead, it seemed like a venue that was genuinely invested in helping you create the reception you truly want.

In addition to the bonus of working with Denise, we also have the benefit of having multiple spaces at Sunnehanna to use for our reception. We have the ballroom, which we’ll use for the actual dinner and dancing, the patio, a great place for cocktail hour, and the sun room, a small alcove off the ballroom to be used for pretty much whatever we want…snacks, some sort of multimedia presentation, bouncy castle…! (OK, maybe not that last one, but how fun would it be to have one of these at your wedding?!)

So even though our prospective guest list of 300 is pushing Sunnehanna’s capacity, hopefully with all of these extra spaces, our guests will have enough room to spread out and enjoy themselves.

Did you only visit one reception venue during your planning? How did you know you had found the right spot?

We only visited one venue as well, and I totally get what you mean by feeling “taken care of.” That translated to us being confident that our guests would be in good hands as well that evening. :) Your venue is gorgeous! Just look at that lovely fireplace and mantle!

Sunnehanna will be beautiful for your wedding. Every event I have ever attended there is flawless! The food is so yummy. I love the porch too :)

I only looked at one reception venue and booked it right away. Our reception is at Oakwood Restaurant part of the Laurel View Village facility in Davidsville. It is reasonably priced, brand new, and has a patio just like Sunnehanna that we will use for our guests to enjoy appetizers and a milk/cookie bar.

I also only looked at one reception venue, it also happens to be our ceremony cite. I knew it was the one probably before we even went there with our “wedding eyes,” Mr. B and I had our first prom together there! I loved it even more when we went back and actually picked a different room than the one the prom was in, but the sentimentality was still there. I think once you know, you know! you know? haha

PS-Mr. B has requested a bounce house at the rehearsal dinner/ engagement party so thanks for the pic!

I am having such a hard time choosing a reception venue for our Pittsburgh wedding! I have found two that I LOVE but are a bit over budget; the things that are in budget are all too “blah” or just don’t fit our time schedule (Carnegie Science Center… so awesome for two med students but they couldn’t start until 8pm on a Saturday). We might just decide to splurge… I agree that having the feeling of being taken care of and that the staff would handle all of the details/bloopers was a big factor that made me love the two places I do. And having multiple spaces for guests to explore, move about gives it a mingle-y feel. Good choice!

I am having my reception at a ski resort (off season of course) and they are letting me do whatever my little bridal heart desires- oh you want to put a tent outside?, no problem (and no extra cost aside from the tent), you want real candles? done. You want a bounce house at the bottom of the hill? they can set it up as early as Thursday (seriously considering it since my photo booth seems like it is out). I also wanted a slip and slide down the hill but logistically that doesn’t seem like its gonna work….

Beautiful venue!!! We only physically visited one reception site too, SC. Sometimes ya just know and have to go with that gut feeling ;) Yay for having a place to get married! (And I’m with Hyena, if you have a bouncy castle, I just may crash your wedding!)

Such a beautiful venue! I’m so excited for you. We didn’t even visit our venue before booking - shock, horror! We knew that summer weddings tend to book things up fast in Vancouver so we booked it sight unseen (apart from all the lovely wedding photos we looked at) and before we were even engaged. Yeah, we’re crazy like that!
