Styling the Girls

April 15th, 2011 @ 8:48 am by Ms. Gazelle

Decisions have been made for the bridesmaids’ dresses!

We loved the dresses from Alfred Sung

…and while I was at the mall the other weekend, I found another source of inspiration. These super cute bubble dresses from RW&Co.

My mom will be making the dresses for the girls, so I scoured the internet for a pattern to pull together all of the elements in the dresses that we really like. Enter the following patterns:

MOH-T will be sporting Butterick B5490:

And BM-D will be sporting the strapless Simplicity pattern 4070:

I love the pleating at the waistband on these dresses! We will be going the “different dresses in the same fabric” route.

As luck would have it, we found fabric too! The other week I was lamenting to BM-D about the difficulty of finding purple fabric. I was thinking that if we couldn’t find a suitable fabric in the right colour, maybe silver would be a good back-up choice? BM-D was pretty adamant about having a purple dress, so she went off to the fabric store and found some purple stretch taffeta that is really pretty. The fabric store was having a massive sale later that weekend, so we bought it at 50% off! Many thanks to BM-D for being so proactive in finding the right fabric for the dresses. And thanks to my mom, I think we will have some absolutely beautiful dresses for a fraction of the cost of dresses from a bridal salon.

Did you have a proactive bridal party to help find the perfect dresses?

It’s great that your mom is making the BMs dresses! That fabric is amazing, too. Beautiful! Can’t wait to see them all finished.

My maid of honor found replacement dresses after she and the other bridesmaids waited until my choice was discontinued and wouldn’t be in until a month after the wedding. Then she found a replacement replacement dress after I read the reviews for that company - medieval ones (this is where I facepalmed about 50 times in the course of a week. BM3 did not want a medieval dress, would not buy one herself, kept telling me the ones I found didn’t come in the right size, and would not tell me her size. And my mom was passive-aggressively insisting they all somewhat match.)

I have that same simplicity pattern! Just a warning it expects you to have large boobs, and for the dress to sit very low on your boobs :p

I gave my bridesmaids a choice. I picked out fabric and gave them 2 guidelines: cocktail length and empire waist. So far, only my matron of honor (my sister) has made her choice. She’s going with that Simplicity pattern in the blue with a brooch instead of a flower. It’s not empire waist, but since she’s the MOH, I let it slide. It’s super-cute!
