After I boldly declared our red and green color scheme, I began thinking about adding an accent color to the mix. Accent colors can add a pop of unexpected fun or elegance while adding depth to the colors already in the mix. In our case, I was just hoping an accent color would help our wedding look less like a Christmas party and more like a wedding.
First, I decided to add white as an accent color. This one was pretty easy. I don’t think I have been to a wedding where white/ivory wasn’t involved somewhere. It kinda goes with the territory, so to speak.
But adding white did not help alleviate the feeling that Santa is coming to town.

So, I decided that more color should be added to our palette to even things out a bit.
First, I thought I would add the rich, beautiful colors shown in this invitation suite:

Adding these blues, oranges, and yellows would certainly dispel my worries of our wedding looking too Christmasy. But…I think it’s too much color. Yeah, I can’t believe I just said that either.
I love color, but I felt like I would be overwhelmed using so many different colors. I know that I would want to coordinate everything with all five colors, and I would end up giving myself a migraine. Or ulcer.
Moving on, I thought brown would make an excellent accent color. Mr. Pony wanted to get married outside amongst the trees, and I thought a nice brown/wood grain would make the perfect addition. I even went so far as to buy this yummy wood-grain paper for future paper projects.

Luckily this was the only wedding-related purchase I made with this color scheme in mind, because we soon found out that our plan of marrying in a grove of trees was not going to happen. (Don’t worry, I’ll cover this tragedy in future posts.)
So, back at square one, I started contemplating what other color we could add to this shindig. Then I found something I wanted to buy really really badly.

The ubiquitous paper straw. They are so pretty! And in gray, the straws are so elegant looking. I have to have them. So I again asked Mr. Pony if we could add gray to our wedding colors. After he acquiesced, the Ponies had their final color scheme: green, red, white, and gray.
I think it falls somewhere between elegant and crazy, but I think we have enough moxie to pull it off. And I think Santa would approve.
What do you think of accent colors? How did you choose yours?
On a related note…do you love paper straws? Do you love the word moxie?
