Mrs. Tartlet's Picture
Mrs. Tartlet, Rochester, MI Age and Occupation: Age & Occupation: 27, Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Medical Student Engagement Date: May 2, 2009 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: The Royal Park Hotel About Me: I'm an exuberant gal from the Midwest with a penchant for Neuroscience and anything sparkly. I'm not afraid to poke fun at myself, and I'm a believer that given the right pair of shoes, a girl can conquer the world. While an interest in the sciences threw Mr. Tartlet and me together (again, and again, until it finally stuck), we share a love for many things---food, video games, car dancing, food, bad puns, travel, did I mention food?---that ultimately led us to where we are now, less than five months from becoming Mr. and Mrs. We're planning a laid-back, romantic, garden-inspired affair with organic and quirky touches that reflect our love for the unexpected!
About Mrs. Tartlet

After many a past hair calamity, I made darn sure to schedule a trial prior to our wedding day. I deliberated between a handful of styles, and thanks to the input my besties and the Hive settled on the soft, loose updo. The half-up-half-down was an equally strong contender until I was reminded on a brief, glorious 70 degree day here that my back sweats excessively when I get warm. Hair plastered to my neck and back = no bueno. My appointment at Posh Studio ended up being a double-whammy with my makeup trial scheduled the same evening. I wanted a fresh and natural look with just a hint of color:

I also coveted a shimmery, sun-kissed glow that the oh-so-lovely Rachel Bilson pulls off to perfection:

A gesture I really appreciated at my trial was my stylist taking the time to get to know what kind of wedding we were having, and more importantly what I was comfortable with. The first few minutes of the appointment were spent chatting and filling out a form that asked questions about our color palette, my wedding dress, who my celebrity style icons were, and so on. This really helped calm the pre-trial jitters I was having!

Before it all began!

The first thing my stylist did was to “set” my hair in pin curls:

Once these curls were secured, we were off to the makeup area where she deftly worked her magic with a slew of brushes. Then it was back to the styling chair to loosen up my hair (no springy curls allowed!):

After a lot of teasing, hairspray, and bobby pins, we had the final result:

Hooray for the side sweep!

Yippee for volume!

Woohoo for the relaxed updo!

As you can probably tell, I’m elated with how my hair turned out! It was tousled without looking overly messy, and the off-center chignon added just the right amount of sophistication. The ’do was also well received by Mr. Tartlet, but he wasn’t as enthusiastic about the makeup. Part of his reservations have to do with the fact that I don’t wear makeup on a daily basis. At most for fancy occasions I use tinted moisturizer and blush, and if I’m feeling ultra glam–lip gloss. So, it was a bit of a shock for him to see me fully “done up.” Numerous people have told me that bridal makeup needs to be heavier and more dramatic to accommodate photographs and different lighting, but I couldn’t help but feel a bit…cake-y…after wearing it for the rest of the night. It didn’t quite have the transluscent-soft-and-glowing finish that I was hoping for.

What do you think? Should I ask the makeup artist to cut back and match my comfort level, or should I leave it be and trust that I won’t look like a made-up doll in person?

I like the look…actually in your photos I’d suggest a little more eye makeup or lashes. You do look very natural and not too made up, so I would not worry.

FANTASTIC! Both your hair and make up look amazing! I might have to “borrow” your makeup photo for our at home reception. ;)

So pretty! I love your hair. Your makeup looks very natural in photos, but if you don’t feel like yourself then definitely go back to your MUA and talk about tweaks.

I love it too!!! Your hair is GORGEOUS!!

As for the makeup - you prob have a perfect complection so if you wanted her to go lighter on foundation, I would just ask her. But, I would keep the blush and eye make up as is except maybe add more mascara or a few fake lashes to make your eyes pop more =)

Love the hair!

For the make-up, maybe have her glam up your eyes a bit more? I know you want natural, but you have to put on more than you think to still look natural in photos. I’d get a pair of MAC eyelashes to add, I love them!

Tartlet, you look GORG. I wouldn’t change a thing, and I’m a Make-up artist.

I know you said you use tinted moisturizer normally, so you can still use that! Just use a bit of powder over it to set it instead of full foundation. With the addiotion of blush, mascara, eyeshadow, etc it will still be more than you’re used to and more “bridal”

I think your hair and makeup look great. But the most important person, besides yourself, to impress is your groom. So I think asking to lighten up the makeup won’t hurt your overall look.

your makeup looks amazing! i dont think you should change it at all. it doesn’t translate in pictures as cakey, so maybe it’s just because you’re not used to wearing so much. also, i love the hair! it looks gorgeous!

I don’t know what the fuss is about having makeup “show up in photos”. If you want to look natural in photos, you should absolutely ask your makeup artist to tone it down. If you’re uncomfortable with how your makeup looks and feels, that discomfort will probably come through in your photos! I’m terrified of having professional makeup done only to look like 1) a geisha or 2) a drag queen.

Your make-up looks gorgeous in the pictures — fresh-faced and natural. But, if you feel like it’s too much for you, then by all means ask them to scale back - it’s all about what works for you and whether or not you’re comfortable. You don’t want to feel gross and cake-y on your wedding day, because then THAT will show in your pictures!

PS, your hair is GORGEOUS! Love the accessory!

@DeaconBride, @eyegirl, @ktisthatbees: I totally forgot to mention eyelashes in my post! I didn’t include them in my trial, but am going to do individuals the day of. ^_^ Unfortunately I can’t use strips because they make me so teary! Thanks for reminding me!
@doxie: Great idea! I’ll mention this to my MUA and see what she thinks. Because she’s the professional, I always hesitate to speak up. :)
@Lida: I had the same fears about having my makeup professionally done! It was key for me to find an artist who was willing to work with my concerns to find a happy medium. I hope you find someone amazing (and wish I could apparate my stylist to your location)!

Thanks everyone for your sweet comments!

The only thing I was going to say is fake lashes but since you are going to get those really there’s nothing that needs improvement! You look great and I love the hair

Did Mr. Tartlet specify what he didn’t like about your make-up? I’ve gotten that before and “You’re wearing too much make-up.” actually translated to “I don’t like the color of your lipstick.” once we got to the bottom of it. Just a thought. I think the overall look is really beautiful on you!
