Hair Dos and Hair Don’ts

April 16th, 2011 @ 11:20 am by Ms. Gazelle

Ready for some fun and embarrassing pictures? :)

My hair is super-duper fine. I think I’ve had an updo twice in my life. The first time was probably the hair trial for my brother’s wedding. The second time was at my brother’s wedding. When they got married back in 2003, my hair was also quite likely the longest it has been in my life. I don’t have a great picture to show how long it was, but this probably gives you an idea of how fine my hair is.

When I went in for my trial for my brother’s wedding, the stylist asked me to flip through some magazines to find pictures of updos I liked. Every single one that I pointed out to her she said wouldn’t be possible because I just didn’t have enough hair. So instead she put some rollers in and got to work.

I don’t remember what the trial was like, but I absolutely HATED my hair at the wedding. It was like a modified French roll, with all kinds of ends sticking up out of the top. It looked like I had a mini birds’ nest piled on the top of my head. (On the plus side, don’t my brother and sister-in-law look awesome?)

I know I look like a complete sourpuss here, but this was me trying not to cry! I have ugly-cry face in most of the pictures of me during the ceremony. What was up with that?

Needless to say, when I think about how I would like my hair to look on my wedding day, an updo like that one is not top of the list. When I saw pictures of Lauren Conrad rocking the side pony, I thought that might be it!

My hair still has a long way to go in the length department, but the biggest concern is whether I can have a full enough ponytail to make this look work instead of it looking limp. So today I got out the curling iron, spun some ringlets halfway up my hair, and tied it in a low side pony. I still have some work to do to make sure the entire pony doesn’t turn into one giant ringlet. I didn’t take any before pictures, but I did take some pictures when I got home. Happily the curl held throughout the day—a miracle! Plus I got complimented on it, too!

You should look into getting some clip in hair extensions, I don’t know where you live if you have a Sallys nearby (beauty supply open to public) but do some research Sallys has reasonable prices on human hair clip in extensions, thats what I am doing, it will def make a difference;)

I have a similar issue and have been growing my hair as long as I can to get some volume out of it. I did get the clip in human hair extensions and they were around $80, but they certainly give me a full pony and a full head of hair. It doesn’t give me perfect hair, but much more to work with and we’ll certainly be able to get the look I’m going for (big, full, soft, side bun).

I would try some extensions, just to give you the fullness you are looking for. Ulta has some great ones, but Sally’s Beauty Supply is good too if you have one near by. Good luck! I too am in the process of growing my hair out, it’s very fine but I have a lot of body too. It just doesn’t like holding a style but I am going to add extensions to my hair for the wedding, to give it that va-va-voom!

Clip in extensions are great! They can be dyed and styled and are pretty affordable!

I had a trial run on my bridal hair just yesterday!…..it was HORRIBLE. I had my “trying not to cry” face on for a while. I wanted curls like Alice in the new Alice in wonderland movie and then pinned loosely back. Instead I got the red queen…I’m serious. I know you’ll find the perfect ‘do! Trials are definately a good idea!

I have some real hair, clip in extensions, and I curled them, on a trial about 2 months ago, and they’re still curled. It is definitely the way to go in my opinion, if you can get some that not necessarily match your hair colour, but also compliment it.

I think that a nice updo would be possible if you used a hair donut or something like that? side pony is cute, maybe a herring bone plait could be good

I agree with hopeandpray, however, I am doing my own hair (on a budget - funds won’t extend to getting a professional), so those exensions are going to save my life lol

I also found that because my hair is so fine and won’t hold a curl for long, that the extensions curl around my own hair, and keep it in place for longer.

I feel your pain… My hair is thin though for another reason… I have Trichotillomania and I pull mine out… I wish I could do something cute with it for the wedding but I cant do much more than my everyday down… (its very short)… I like the side pony though!

I second the idea to go with some extensions, but I would also like to mention the idea of using volumizing spray and a blow-dryer w/ defuser to get more of a volumzed look to the roots of your hair. It is one thing to have a nice thick pony tail, but it definitely adds something more if your hair looks thick and lush all the way to the root. I don’t advocate trying a poof with thinner hair though! On a good note, you have a LOVELY hair color :] Lastly, I have very long & thick (almost down to waist) hair & although most people would consider it nice, at my Dad’s third wedding my evil step-mom did my hair and curled it using hot rollers and I looked like a total poodle. It was sick :[

Can I make a suggestion? Why not go a little old hollywood and do fingerwaves? They work perfectly with fine hair, and look GORGEOUS.

Miss Gazelle! Valhalla here, also a fellow Vancouver bee. And I can empathize with the thin hair issue. I also have think hair, but luckily a little bit more of it. However, my hair has ZERO volume and is stick straight. I got married last June, and I decided to wear my hair down (looked too sever pulled up) and I had my stylist diffuse the hell out of it. When it is first done, you look a little scary, but because our hair can’t really hold style that well, it falls into place with a more normal look relatively quickly. Send me a PM if you want to see a photo. Extensions may also be an excellent addition to your hair.

I agree clip in hair extensions are fabulous. You will never lose the curl either because those things are rediculous when it comes to staying put. The photos from the wedding don’t look like you ! You are so much prettier in the ones you took for fun :)

Love the side pony! I have very similar hair woes, and my amazing stylist made some suggestions for my wedding day hair. Clip-in extensions - which I see many other ladies have suggested, plus a little something called a hair whif (sp?). Think of like those little chicken cutlets you can stuff in your bra to enhance the girls, well it’s kind of like that but made of hair or some other fluffy stuff inside of a hair net type contraption. Your stylist tucks it under your hair to give you more volume at the crown. Good luck! You will look beauftiful whatever you decide!

I have super fine hair, too! I feel your pain. For my wedding, I did a low side-pony and it worked great. That morning I washed my hair (day-old hair isn’t an option for my fine hair!) and then I put a TON of a volumizing spray in and blow dried it upside down. It helped give my hair enough “stickiness” for my stylist to get my hair to play nicely. :) Good luck!
