Sparks and I knew our first dance song would have some high expectations to live up to. Music is a huge part of our lives. In fact, some of my happiest relationship memories are of concerts, music festivals, and just listening to records in our living room. I remember looking at those records when we got engaged, and feeling so overwhelmed. How could we pick ONE song from all those amazing tunes?
The answer came to us in the form of these guys:

Little Joy. Their music reminds me of a sunny day at a French Bistro… or a rainy day wandering around the Museum of Modern Art. Whichever you prefer. And you may recognize the guy on the left. That’s Fabrizio Moretti, the drummer from one of my all-time-favorite bands, The Strokes (I mean, have you heard the new Strokes album? My heart beats to it).
Anyway, Sparks and I knew Little Joy’s song, Brand New Start, was our first dance song the moment we heard it. It was upbeat, unique and, most importantly, it means something to us. Over the past 9 months we’ve played that song to cheer us up after crappy days at work and to dance to when we’re drunk and happy on Saturday nights. We’ve gone to the Little Joy concert and danced around like idiots while everyone else did the concert sway, and we’ve smiled big time when it played in Whole Foods or the J.Crew dressing room (a weird surprise). So while we picked a song that was new to both of us, I really appreciate the fact that all our memories of that song will center around the wedding. I know when I hear it 25 years from now, I’ll go right back to the time we spent planning and getting ready for our big day.
We’ve managed to keep this a secret from most of our guests, so if you are attending the Sparkler wedding and want to be surprised, DON’T play the song below. For everyone else… hope you like it!

Little Joy, Brand New Start
Take advantage of the season
To take off your overcoat
The spirits will lift off those young men you provoke
But I’ll be laughing, knowing I will take you home
There ain’t no lover like the one I’ve got
Ain’t no lover like the one ive got
She and I have a brand new start
I gotta give all my love
All this time they had me thinking
Love’s a boat that’s slowly sinking
But you made the claim
Taking chances, embracing the change
I count my blessings knowing you will take me home
There ain’t no lover like the one I’ve got
Ain’t no lover like the one ive got
She and I have a brand new start
I gotta give all my love
I got time to hold my own
What’s a day when the years are on their way?
I gotta say
There ain’t no lover like the one I’ve got
Ain’t no lover like the one ive got
She and I have a brand new start
I gotta give all my love
Did anyone else pick a first dance song that they grew to love even more?
