About Mrs. Pony

Gimme a G!

April 18th, 2011 @ 4:36 pm by Mrs. Pony

G! What’s that spell? Wedding-table letters!

In an effort to get some more menial projects out of the way while I have some desire and patience left, I decided to dedicate some time recently to making table numbers. First, I had to make the all-important decision of what they should be. There are so many creative, fun, and gorgeous ideas out there it can be hard to choose.

For example, the customary number can be fun and creative, as evidenced by Mrs. Lovebug:

Or how about the gorgeous artistic approach taken by Mrs. Cowboy Boot?

Then I saw this and I got to thinking. Which is usually frightening.

I thought, I have a dad who has tools. I also have a fiance who likes to use those tools to make things. I need table numbers. (You’re smart—you know where this is going.) I recruited Mr. Pony to make us some table numbers. Instead of numbers, however, we chose letters.

We chose letters for a couple of reasons.

  1. Your wedding guests will feel less like losers sitting at a table P than a table 16.
  2. There’s less stuff to cut out. (Unless you’re like me and you can’t or don’t want to decide which letters you like best, so you make your fiance cut out all the letters. Oops.)

So we got down to business:

(Side note: I was going to do a whole DIY post, but Mr. P finished these so quickly I didn’t get to take any pictures. And, frankly, they aren’t that involved to require a whole post.)

First, we picked out a font we both liked. (We chose Peake from dafont.)

Next, we resized the letters to the size we wanted them and printed them out. (We decided on about four inches.)

We picked out our wood (the cheapest 2 x 6 I could find, which was something like $0.80).

Mr. P taped the letters onto the wood.

Cut cut cut (or saw saw saw, I suppose, with the band saw), aaaaaaaaaaaaaand…

Voila! Instant table letters:

All the letter friends together

Ah, the possibilities! (last two are personal photos)

Aren’t they pretty? I just love them, but…I don’t know know what to do with them now. Which is why I need your help, hive.

How should we decorate these? Paint them all one color? Paint them all our wedding colors? Make them sparkly? Cover them in fabric? Do something else amazing I have yet to think of?

PS: Didn’t Mr. P do a wonderful job? Is P better than16? Which table would you choose to sit at? And seriously, how should we decorate these?

i love the table letters, Miss P. You’re so right, table P is wayyy better than table 16. We’re using beach critters for ours and had a ton of fun making them :)

What about staining them? http://www.minwax.com/products/color-guide/ So many colors! And so many shades of red and green! You could mix it up or do them all one of your wedding colors. But it looks like some of these stains could help you achieve the “I promise this is not a Christmas wedding” look but still incorporate the colors you love. Maybe Antique Red and Green Tea from the above colors? Plus I like the idea of staining because you still get to keep some of the gorgeous wood-ness.

Also….he made those? I am very thoroughly impressed with Mr. Pony.

Leave them as is.

When faced with a wedding decision, I often ask myself, can I picture my guests saying, “Well gee, she should have done XYZ.” The answer is often: No.

For example, I debate putting a monogram or something on my belly bands instead of the boring band with double-sided tape. But then I thought, can I picture one of my guests saying, “Gee, should could have been more creative and written their names or attached a circular cricut cut out of their monogram.” Obviously, I can’t see anyone doing that, so then it’s not a “need to have” and becomes off my “to-do” list.

Certainly we have enough to do already, right? No sense adding to the list.

Ooh, I like the staining idea–who knew you could stain wood such pretty colors? Spray paint sounds more appealing from a quick and easy standpoint. And there’s always the option of a little glitter sprinkled on…

Definitely agree that letters are way better than numbers!

Hmmmm… knowing me, I’d just spray paint them or turn my kids’ loose on ‘em. (Needless to say, they would be letters to be remembered after my kids got done with them! LOL!)

Letters are a great idea! I’m torn between being lazy (numbers) and more creative (names). I think something different encourages guests to walk around and see what everyone else has. Mingling is good!

What about Papier-mâché? It would look like fabric but better. I have seen the big monogrammed letters like this and they are beautiful.

I think they look great as is! They would act as a great neutral no matter what your tablescape ends up looking like!

@NauticalBride2011: This is a great idea, I had no idea so many different colors of stains existed! Yep, Mr. Pony made them all, he’s a keeper!
@Ryna: I bet your kids would make them look great and would be such a great personal story!

Whoa, Mr. P has some mad skills with a band saw. These are awesome! I also like the natural tone of the wood you chose, but these would look lovely painted a beautiful shade of gray (or red, or green), too!

I am super impressed with Mr. P’s skills! I agree with everyone else—I love the idea of letters vs. numbers. Also, I vote the stained or painted route :) I can see these working out in any of your colors (red, green, gray…all lovely!)

These turned out awesome! You could do a cherry (reddish) stain to match your color.

You could also make a word out of each letter:
The AMAZING table for A
The LOVE table for L

You can have your guests make words that remind them of you and Mr P. that start with the letter of the table… maybe the best word wins the centerpiece or something like that

Oh, how I love wood projects! Mr. Pony did a fantastic job! I can’t give you any ideas on how to finish them because I have as many ideas as you listed rolling around in my brain. I can’t wait to see what you decide on.

For the wood projects we did, I used glittery paint. It turned out really pretty!
