Mrs. Sparkler, Chicago Age and Occupation: 27, Communications Aficionado Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Publisher Engagement Date: July 21, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Chicago Illuminating Company About Me: I’m a Southern lady living in the big city of Chicago. Well, lady may be a stretch, but I’m working hard to keep some Virginia charm in our sleek, urban, wedding-palooza! I’m addicted to marathons, not-so-famous bands, Chicago restaurants, and Mark Twain. I cry during SPCA commercials, and I think LOST was the best show to ever hit television. Mr. S and I met at a classy college mixer and, 7 years later, he’s still by my side. He’s the only child, laid back, free spirit... I’m the oldest of five kids, type-A, organizer. It doesn’t work on paper, but we’ve never paid attention to that stuff anyway. Somehow it works. And like they say, sometimes when you know…you just know.

Fancy Time

April 18th, 2011 @ 12:26 pm by Mrs. Sparkler

What is it about wearing a hat that can make you feel extra fancy? Growing up in Virginia, I’m no stranger to hat-wearing affairs. Between horse races, plantation weddings, Easter brunches, and Derby parties, I’ve gotten pretty comfortable sporting multi-colored plumes on my head. But recently, hats seem to be making an international comeback thanks to this lady:

I think Kate Middleton is absolutely fabulous. And I love that she can fearlessly rock a feathered pouf on her forehead and make it look chic. Because of her, I’ve been viewing my hats in a different light. I think it’s time to take them out of the “Southern Events Only” category, and bring them into the “Anytime You’re Feeling Fancy” spotlight.

Starting with our wedding.

How awesome would it be to arrive at a pre-wedding event wearing creations like these?

I think I’m in love. Would you consider wearing something like this to a wedding event? Or do you think they’re best saved for horse-related parties?

If the invitation asked me to, I totally would. I think it would be fun to have a bridal event where everyone was asked to wear something like this!

You should go for it! I’m not a hat person but I mean, the way I see it….if Kate is doing it…you can & should do it too! :)

I LURVE hats, but have always thought I looked dorky in them. These beauties above could certainly be rocked at a wedding!

I think it’s all a matter of confidence and a person’s individual style… I feel like if I showed up in a hat people would assume I had a hairstyling accident and wanted to cover it up since hats are so NOT me. But, if it matches your style and your can rock it, I say go for it!

That one by Debenham’s is awesome! Reminds me of something right out of a classic TV show.

That HArrod’s hat makes my heart skip a best. I wish I had to style to pull it off!

There’s something very English about hats, I find. One of my English aunties asked my mum last week if she was wearing a hat to the wedding. I think my mum just laughed! Mum is not a hat person, but I would love to rock any of the ones you posted!

I love this as a shower theme! Or as an awesome accessory for your bridesmaids! I couldn’t pull it off with my dress but, I hope you rock the hat somewhere in your wedding activities!

@Miss Cinnamon Bun: It’s true! One of my good friends is English, and she loves weddings as an excuse to wear grand hats. I hope she wears one to mine. :)

Hats at weddings are pretty much de rigeur in Britain. And it allows for fantastic features like this:

Awesomeness!! I feel like these are a cross between a hair accessory and a hat, which makes them even better! I would bow in awe to the fashionista who showed up in something like any of the ones you showed!

I love them! I prob wouldn’t even think of them as hats…more like ‘hat-bands’ I wish I was fancy enough to pull them off!

YES! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve lamented that we couldn’t pull off something like this for our own wedding. I would be ridiculously excited for the opportunity to wear a statement hat. :) Du eet!

I wouldn’t wear one, partially because I have my heart set on a veil and partially because I think I’d look ridiculous. But I do love seeing other people wearing them! : ) Kate, for example, looks fabulous! And I think if you were to wear them someplace where people wore hats & headpieces often, it would be very chic.
