Mrs. Jaguar, Sydney Age and Occupation: 27, Primary School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, IT Consultant Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Curzon Hall About Me: I'm an Australian girl who is a self-proclaimed nerd, loves all things stationery and would be lost without books, music and the internet. Mr. Jaguar and I have been together for the past eight years and he finally popped the question last August. Hurrah! We currently live in Sydney, Australia with our adorable cat who thinks he's a person. We're a couple who likes to multi-task: we've been planning a wedding abroad, a permanent move from London to Sydney, and preparing to build our own home all at the same time. Travelling makes me giddy...as does Mr. Jaguar, of course!
About Mrs. Jaguar

IKEA = Love!

April 18th, 2011 @ 6:11 pm by Mrs. Jaguar

I’ve been using the school holiday break to tackle a few little DIY-projects that I’ve been putting off. I started with our place cards: next up on the agenda were our table menus. Our venue gave us the option of printing them for us, but at $10 per menu, I balked & decided to do it ourselves.

I already knew that I wanted to keep the costs down – and I had the perfect solution in mind. I visited my favourite-store-of-all-time, Ikea, and stocked up on these babies:

The Tolsby Frame from Ikea

Ah, love. You may have seen them around on the ‘Bee before (featured in Mrs Stripes‘ and Mrs Dolphin’s weddings, and probably more that I’ve forgotten!) and you’ll see them in the future, because at 99c a pop? They’re the perfect addition to your table. The fact that they’re double sided is even better, since it means I can get away with having one on each table, with menus facing in both directions.

There are lots of tutorials out there which give you pre-made templates and ideas to use the frames, but I knew I wanted to stick to the same vibe in all of our stationery. After a while spent in publisher working out the sizing/spacing, this is what I came up with:

This was just a mock-up to get an idea of sizing and fonts, but now I have a bigger decision to make: what colour paper/cardstock & ink to use to print it? The frames say they’re white, but they’re really more ivory (which is fine by me!) so I’m thinking of just finding an ivory shade & sticking with the dark grey/black ink. Here they are in all of their glory, looking slightly dwarfed by the giant Oscar-cat.

These will be just a part of our overall table decoration scheme, but I love that they were cheap and cheerful to make – and let’s face it, you can NEVER have too many photo frames in your house!

What’s been the cheapest wedding related purchase you’ve bought so far?

Oh yeah… I made a 3 hour trip each way to buy up a huge boxful of these (table number, random signage) and all my vases along with other wedding goodness :)

I have those frames on my online IKEA shopping list, just waiting for me to buy them! Along with $200 worth of other stuff. I love their website, it’s almost as fun as visiting the actual shop. Will be making the trip down to IKEA next month. Can’t wait! IKEA most definitely = LOVE.

I think each table should come with a cat along with the menu. :)

@Miss Lox & @MissBike: Seriously, they are such a great little invention. I love Ikea. I’ve been banned from going in there again until after the wedding is over! ;)

@Miss Bacon: He comes in handy sometimes!!

@thewheelsonthebus: Yes! I also stocked up on vases and tea light candle votives, too. :D

@pohget: You definitely need to plan for it! The first time I went there just for wedding stuff, I came home with a dining table, 2x side tables and a bookshelf.

@mightywombat: Haha, as long as the cat is not ON the menu (& people don’t mind a little cat-fur in their entrees!) that could totally work. ;)

Those Tolsby frames are one of my favorite decor items to see in weddings. :) I love the simple elegance of your menu design!

i have a few i picked up for a baby shower. loved them. random question though: the included acetate film thing had an annoying black recyclable mark on them…did yours have that too? i couldn’t figure out how to remove it so i had to leave them off.

@Hammertime: Awesome! We considered painting them, but since Ivory was one of our wedding colours anyway, we decided to leave ‘em.

@Miss Tartlet: Thanks! They’re kind of simple and plain, but that’s what we’re going for. :)

@tea: YES! I actually had to google this. Turns out they’re both stickers on BOTH sides - you have to pick/scratch at a top corner, and you can peel them & the watermark off. It took me AGES to figure it out!

@tea: Don’t worry, I basically scratched and scratched and mutilated my first little frame, trying to figure out how to do it. I was about ready to go back to Ikea and FORCE them to remove the watermark, haha. Google is mah friend. ;)

This is exactly what I have been thinking of doing. Very cute! And thank god for Ikea. I haven’t even THOUGHT of all the cheap Ikea possibilities! Thanks for the tip.

Do you think these frames could be painted? If so, I might need to get me some. I have never been to IKEA, can you believe it???
