The Honeymoon––Check!

April 18th, 2011 @ 5:22 pm by Ms. Gazelle

Early on in the planning, Mr. Gazelle and I knew that we would like to go on a honeymoon as soon as possible after the wedding. Time would be limited, though. We have to take time off before the wedding to travel to it, so we only have a few days after the wedding to take a trip. As much as we might have liked to wax poetic about a honeymoon to Europe, we knew it wasn’t possible. We didn’t want to put off a honeymoon till later in the year when we might be able to take more time off, as we were worried something would come up and we’d never go on that honeymoon.

So, instead, we focused on someplace reasonably close by that we could go to right after the wedding, i.e., somewhere in North America. Beaches were out, as we weren’t looking to relax, but were looking to see someplace cool.

The decision? New York City!

The Honeymoon–--Check! : wedding honeymoon vancouver Gaz1 gaz1

I’ve been before, but this will be Mr. Gazelle’s first visit to the Big Apple. We’ve booked our flights through air miles to keep costs down (and since I had a ridiculous amount available to use). We sat down and made a decision on our hotel recently, too—The Distrikt. The reviews on TripAdvisor are really good, the location looks to be smack dab in the middle of everything, and the price was right (key for New York City).

What to do in NYC?

On the absolute must-do list for Mr. Gazelle is the American Museum of Natural History.

On my list is Wicked. (Tickets may have already been procured, as I did not want to miss out.)

Also, I want to see the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

For those of you around New York City (or who go there frequently), please help a Gazelle out! Do you have any suggestions on places to go, things to see, or places to eat?

Are you going on a honeymoon right after your wedding?

You should definitely get a City Pass. http://www.citypass.com
My fiance and I went to NYC last October and used City Passes. They were awesome and we went to every place in 2 days!

hi Gazelle :-),

Brooklyn heights is a nice place to go and relax at nights and on the weekends. You can take the subway from manhattan and go by the water.

Also down by chealsea for some night life, music etc.Great music and food.

You might also want to take one of the sight seeing buses that tour the city. The tourguides are pretty fun and you can hop on and off as you like all day.

If you want to go to Ellis Island/statutue of liberty take a subway or cab down to 12th ave or south street/waters street area.

Good luck on your trip

Lombardi’s Pizza - I go every time I’m in NYC, never fail. Then pop over to Spring Street lounge for a pint.

Patsy’s Pizzeria is fun too - a little more upscale.

Yay! I was just there last month for the first time and had so much fun! It was a really quick visit, but we managed to go to the AMNH, Top of the Rock Observatory, Times Square, Empire State Building, and walk from the tip of Manhattan to end of North end of Central Park. I really liked going to the Top of the Rock rather than the Empire State Building because I wanted to SEE it instead of be on it. I highly recommend Lavain Bakery too! It can be kind of tricky to find (first hand experience) so I will tell you that it is on the bottom level of a building and you have to walk down some stairs into the bakery. Follow your nose and look for a long line. And yes, they are $4 cookies, but you can split one! And it is your honeymoon, so I think it is worth a splurge!

Anyway, I hope you have tons of fun! What a great spot for a honeymoon :)

Rooftop bar at the Met Museum! Such a great spot for a cocktail, overlooking the park. Very romantic :-)

Also, a dear friend of mine got married at Brock House a few years ago - it was really lovely! Looking forward to reading all about yours.

I looooove NYC! I wish we could afford to go every year! Going to Ground Zero, a must do. Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. There are so many “free things” to do. Just walking around the city is an experience in and of itself! Central Park is beautiful. I am thinking of things as I type. Sorry. I am so excited for you and majorly jealous! You MUST do recaps after, please don’t leave me hanging!

Oooo, that sounds like a grand honeymoon! We are really into food and Mr. PaC’s brother is a Manhattan chef and caterer, so we’ve gotten to try some tasty places:
Crispo - to die for fresh pasta, meatballs
Snack Taverna - tasty Greek food
Tia Pol - yummy tapas

Wicked is so good! We saw it in San Francisco when we went on the trip we got engaged on. :) And yes, we booked the Wicked tickets as soon as we had our flights.

I was going to suggest levain bakery, but I see someone already beat me to it! It has the added advantage of being a nice short walk down central park west from the museum of natural history. And definitely do the empire state building - but the secret is to go late at night (it’s open til 2am, I think) so you don’t have to wait in line or deal with crowds. More romantic that way, too - and the view at night is just as beautiful, if not more so. Don’t be fooled into paying extra money to go the tippy top, though- the view is not noticeably different and it’s a tiny enclosed space. The 84th (or whatever) floor is all you need.

you MUST go to the Village and grab a slice of pizza from Ray’s pizza - you will see many Ray’s pizza but the one in the Village is THE best. You can wander around Washington Square park while you are there as well. Crumbs bakery cupcakes are delish (and they are everywhere). Hanging out in Central Park is an outstanding experience and I absolutely cant wait for it to get nice so I can head in again! There is SO much to do the list could go on and on!

If you plan on having one all-out fancy meal, ELEVEN MADISON PARK is the way to go. It’s expensive, but in terms of value I think it’s the best of all the four-star restaurants - they shower you with little mini-courses in between your regular courses and have absolutely amazing amazing service. Like, I thought they were under the impression that we were a celebrity couple. Highly recommended.

Also I definitely suggest taking a nice walk over the Brooklyn Bridge (the ice cream and pizza places on the other side are really good). There’s a nice park on the Brooklyn side that just opened, and a couple of good bars and galleries.

Have so much fun!
If you do go to Brooklyn Heights like ekeisha suggested, do go to my favorite restaurant: Jack the Horse Tavern.

My personal suggestions:
1) Don’t go to the top of the Empire State (waste of money and time), if you REALLY wanna do that I would suggest Top of the Rock Observation Deck instead
2) Transit Museum is AMAZING and only $5!
3) The Tenement Museum is worth the $20 per person
4) Central Park is lovely… especially going to Belvedere Castle and then boating in the park
5) Butter Lane has the BEST cupcakes in NYC
6) Cusine de Pesci in East Village has 2 for 1 drinks and apps plus free mussles till 8 during the week
7) If you love mac n cheese you will LOVE S’MAC! $15 for dinner for two
8) Wicked is an awesome play but it will cost you double if you book ahead. I suggest going to the TKTS booth, although it will not guarantee Wicked, but it may be there the next day
9) Ben’s Pizza on 3rd street and MacDougal is the best Pizza in the city
10) Go walk the Highline, it’s free and cool

We went to NYC on our honeymoon too! It was amazing. We saw Wicked, went to museums and on walking tours, ate FABULOUSLY, got milkshakes and just walked around the park, went iceskating, and spent entirely too much time at NBC Studios. :) It was lots of fun and quite romantic. You’ll have a great time!

I’m not sure of your budget, but I’m a total cheapo NYC-native so here are some budget-friendly suggestions -

1. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge

2. Walk along the Brooklyn promenade in Brooklyn Heights

3. BEST PIZZA EVER is in Brooklyn - DiFara’s pizza in Midwood. TRUST ME - no Brooklynite will contest this. It’s closed on Monday and there is always a long wait and line out the door, but it is WORTH IT. I totally hate waiting for anything so this is saying a lot! About $30 a pie. Worth it.

4. Chinese food in Chinatown, obvs. Big Wong is a classic go-to.

5. Shopping in SoHo. For me, this is the only place to go. Top Shop, Bloomingdale’s, Sabon, Uniqlo, and lots of street vendors selling beautiful handmade jewelry. Kind of like a street etsy.

6. Chocolate Room in Parkslope (5th avenue one). This place is all chocolate, all the time. Love it. We go here all the time for fondue and brownie sundaes :-)

Have fun! NYC is the best city in the world.
