Mrs. Seal, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 25, Personal Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Sales and Support Specialist Engagement Date: December 12, 2009 Wedding Date: November 2011 Venue: Sts Peter and Paul Church/The Bently Reserve About Me: I am a goofy, wannabe crafty, well-intentioned Renaissance Woman (OK, perhaps "aimless wanderer" is a more aptly suited term for me, but hopefully you get the point)—basically I dabble in just about everything and pride myself in such. Without warning, I occasionally breakout into soulful improvised songs and interpretive dances and there's just no stopping me! As so many others before me, planning our wedding has unearthed a deep, intense passion for all things bridal and I secretly fear the day it will come to an end. Mr. Seal and I are quite the pair and life with him by my side is extremely rewarding—I am so thankful to have found him. Together we are planning a black-tie San Francisco affair for 250—light on the stuffiness and with lots of extra Seal-y flair.
About Mrs. Seal

One of my favorite parts of any wedding reception is the father-daughter dance. I am undoubtedly a huge sap, but there truly is something so revealing and special about this tradition. I love watching the interaction between the bride and her father while dissecting the lyrics of the song they’ve chosen—I weep. Every. Time.

So, when it came to figuring out how I’d approach the father-daughter dance at my own wedding, I wanted to make sure we chose something special and meaningful. I can be quite the ham, but I don’t want to make people laugh with a choreographed father-daughter jig—I want big salty tears, people!

I’m sadistic, I know.

Anyhow, I’m not purely evil. I just wanted to choose something that accurately reflects the kind of relationship I have with my father and, though we definitely make corny jokes and share lots of laughs, a silly dance just isn’t our style.

So I started brainstorming, and a couple of obvious options came to mind.

“Isn’t She Lovely?”

Video via YouTube

Well, I AM pretty lovely and I love me some Stevie, but it’s a bit fast, a little narcissistic of a choice, and didn’t invoke enough emotion for me. No go.

“Unforgettable?”

A definite contender and an obvious tearjerker but, aside from its general sentimentality, it holds no special meaning to either Daddy Seal or me. So I nixed it.

I searched song after song, and I started to feel a bit overwhelmed. I stopped trying so hard and started thinking about my dad. He’s a musician and, as such, music has played an extremely important role in my life—there had to be a song that meant something to us. So I kept thinking.

As a result of his profession, my dad isn’t physically around often and never has been. I’ve never ever felt deprived, but I have definitely learned to treasure all the times I share with my father. So it was then, when I started recalling my highlight reel of father-daughter moments, that it hit me.

Like a ton of bricks.

When I was little and when Dad wasn’t touring, he sang me to sleep. This was something I greatly looked forward to because it was a moment just for us. I even recall a time in college when I was particularly stressed out and missing Daddy Seal—he, being ever clairvoyant, phoned to check in and unexpectedly decided to end the call with the familiar lullaby. I cried. (I told you I am sappy!)

I tracked down the song and discovered several different versions. Based on how Daddio sang it to me, I was pretty certain I found the right rendition but decided to double check anyhow.

Everyone told me to surprise him at the reception with my song choice. However, after reading his response to my email (simply asking for the artist of the song so I could add it to my collection), I knew he not only needed forewarning, but also a choice.

His response:

Hi Topo [his nickname for me],

There are a lot of different versions of the song that you’ve asked for but this is the version that I remember.

I hope that you know that this is an extremely emotional song for me and that I cannot hear it without crying.

You are, and always will be, my one and only, little princess.

I love you,

Dad

After that reply, how could I not tell him? So I did. AND I gave him an out. If this song was going to be too emotional for us, then we could surely choose something else. Heck, I’d even opt for a goofy boogie if he wanted.

Nevertheless, he decided against the latter option. In fact, he told me that no other song would do and that he would listen to the song repeatedly to practice maintaining his composure.

He’s not the only one.

Here it is—it’s not a very well-known song, but it’s our song:

If you’re fortunate enough to have your father in your life, will you partake in the father-daughter-dance tradition? How did you choose your song?

So sweet that you and your Dad have a song. My Dad was on the road a lot too, but he always took me to Disney movies, so we danced to Jiminy Cricket’s “When You Wish Upon a Star.”

My dad used to sing “Cupid” by Sam Cooke to me, but I don’t know if that exactly a father-daughter dance kind of song. I may just say “the heck with it” and use it though, because I can’t think of anything else better/more meaningful.

You will get big salty tears for sure…i cried when i read the email from your dad!!! too sweet.

We chose Harvest Moon by Neil Young, the words are a little “off” for a father daughter song…but its dad for sure. he used it play it on his guitar and sing it all the time when i was little….

I do have my father in my life and I love him dearly but its more of a friend type relationship as we were not close during my childhood. I was however very very close to my grandfather and always imagined dancing with him at my wedding. Unfortunately my grandpa passed a few years ago so this wont happen. Reading your post actually made me teary eyed. Partly because im envious of you and partly because im so happy for you as well. Enjoy your moment with your dad, im sure it will be one you will never ever forget.

My dad picked the song for our father-daughter dance, and when I listened to it I was a total sobbing wreck. I’m a little better now when I hear it, but not by much! I love the song you’re dancing to. :)

I picked a handful of songs and let my dad choose which song he liked the best. He ended up choosing My Wish by Rascal Flatts - I am sure it will conjure up a few tears! I love that you guys have a song - and that note from your dad? SOOO sweet!

@stardustintheeyes: Your comment regarding your father and grandfather parallels my life - I just found my dad two years ago and my dear Papa passed on back in ‘91. That’s why I was brought to tears so easily as well.

Such a cute story!! My dad is a big sappy pants, so I think the song won’t even matter, he’ll start sniffling as soon as we get on the dance floor. But my method of choosing has been kind of similar to yours. My dad LOVES Earth, Wind, and Fire. I figured I would surprise him with an EWF song and that’ll be all she wrote! Good luck!
