About Mrs. Pain au Chocolat

OMG, someone restrain me! Take away my credit card or freeze it in a block of ice.

Escort Me to Obsession-ville : wedding decor diy wilmington Shopaho shopaho

Movie still from Confessions of a Shopaholic via MKwonderland

I’ve just added $60 of washi tape/happy tape to my Etsy cart and cannot stop. It’s a rush hunting down the rolls in my color palette. Bright yellows, pretty blues and greens, punchy pinks…thinking of all the lovely color combinations and future non-wedding uses has me giddy with excitement.

The only thing stopping me from proceeding to checkout is explaining to Mr. PaC:

  1. Why I ordered…tape.
  2. What the heck washi tape is.
  3. Why we can’t just use plain tape. (See also: Why I have to add a layer of complexity to everything.)
  4. Why we need it for the wedding.

*sigh*

These cake flags are so cute I can barely stand it.

How could my future husband say no?

My erratic thought process started with escort cards. We need escort cards that designate each guest’s meal choice. When it’s done in a pretty way, like with a ribbon or a brad, I swoon.

But ribbon would need to be sewn (or glued) onto the escort card. I don’t have access to a sewing machine; gluing would take waaaaay too long and possibly bleed through the ribbon. Someone more clever than me stapled hers.

Mr PaC wants to use the multitudes of wine corks that I saved for no good reason—until now. As escort-card holders, they pair perfectly with our wine-bottle centerpieces. I like the wine corks, but we still needed paper (preferably pre-cut) for the cards.

And while browsing office supplies, these bright yellow tags jumped out at me: four dollars for 100! Mr. PaC wants to use the corks. But then I wouldn’t be able to use my hang tags on a display board…and I still hadn’t figured out how to designate meal choices in an aesthetically pleasing way. What would Anthropologie do?

Wanting color, whimsy, AND affordability, I abandoned the idea for a few days. Until!!! I stumbled upon a 100 Layer Cake post where I ended up face-to-screen with my escort-card destiny: hang tags with washi tape. And now you’re caught up to the present hour where my brain is whirring with possibilities.

To indicate meal choices, I’m thinking of pink/red (beef), greens (vegetarian), and blues (fish). Which, coincidentally, is our color palette. Considering it’s just tape, my current level of excitement may be a little over the top. Eh, who cares? I love tape!

Which colors of washi tape would you choose?! What silly things have you fallen in love with…only to have your proclamation of love fall on wedding-deaf ears?

I love this idea and the washi tape! I’ve had that same conversation with Mr. Pony about why I need certain wedding items multiple times. If they read wedding blogs I feel like everything would be resolved much quicker.

Those are so cute! : ) Couldn’t you stick the hang tags into the corks like any other piece of cardstock? I’m just pondering how guests would get them off the line in the picture….

Also, is washi tape opaque? Because if it isn’t, using it overtop of bright yellow cards might alter the colour. Any washi tape-users care to chime in?

I also just fell in love with washi tape after seeing Ms. Elephant’s post on her OOT bags. However, the cost is a bit…um, eye opening?? About my love of all things wedding-y, I don’t even tell my FI anymore after he saw me with a glue gun and 500 corks (WHAT??!!) but the time I did cupcake flags and drink flags, he was done!! Now, my flip flop baskets, fan programs, photobooth mats etc are NOT going to be told to him. I don’t need a wedding Debbie Downer telling me ‘But honey, really, do you mean that folks won’t have fun if you don’t give a bunch of them parasols? What are parasols??’

Hee hee hee, I love it! I’m glad I am not the only one who gets excited about the little cute things. Now where can I get me some washi tape?

You have no idea how many times I’ve added 8+ rolls of washi tape to my cart and not actually pushed ‘buy’.

I also agree with @Jenniphyr, I’m pretty certain washi tape is a bit transparent, so the yellow will change the colour slightly.

I have never heard of washi tape, but it looks so cool! I am so addicted to crafting supplies. I have bins and boxes full of supplies but haven’t come up with crafts for them all. Now I have a new supply to add to my stash. Yay!!

I love washi tape! We’re using it to decorate our plain white favor boxes. It’s truly addictive searching Etsy for our wedding colors.

Haha - after the first couple of projects where I was jumping with excitement and Mr. Lace sat there staring at me with his mouth open, I decided to just attack the projects and I didn’t even consult him. Sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands! :) He honestly could have done without all the details, but I loved them. The ribbon thing took me a couple of hours with my SIL and it was done (and cheap).

I’m trying to think of a cheaper alternative to washi tape, but the only thing I can think of is maybe scrapbook paper cut into strips, glued onto your cards and trimmed. It’ll be cheaper, but more time consuming. Good lucK! Such cute ideas!

I have not begun my hunt for washi tape for all our projects (welcome boxes and drink stirrers), yet. I am sure I will be searching down etsy soon for all this lovely tape.

Bwahaha - I totally ordered washi tape without consulting Mr. Tartlet for our invites. It’s so friggin’ cute, and it was so hard not to order a bunch more just because!

Ooooooh washi tape—so pretty! I have no idea what wedding-related uses I could make of it, but perhaps I will just live vicariously through you and your pretty “washified” escort cards. :)

I need to leave this post right now, because we do not have very many DIY projects left and pretty soon I’ll be buying $60 worth or that tape and trying to find a project for it. Ooooh no!

That is such a great idea! If we were doing choice menus then I’d definitely steal this idea. Too bad we are going for buffet!

@Miss Pony: Amen, equine sister!
@Jenniphyr: All good points! My tape arrived this week and a test revealed it’s not fully opaque. We scrapped the yellow hang tags and went for the ivory because it’ll look better with the corks. (Yup, we’re using the corks.)
@bRooklynRocks: Bwahahaha at the parasol line!
@Miss Magic: You will lose HOURS if you go searching for washi tape on etsy. They will be happy hours, but you’ve been warned. Happy shopping!
@Miss Cinnamon Bun: After purchasing the basic colors, I still have 9 rolls in my cart. (Mr. PAC saw the $60 at the top of the post and had a momentary freak-out until he realized that was the worst case scenario.)
@Miss Elephant, @Miss Bacon & @MissCarolyn: Oh, he’s on board and as excited as you could hope for a guy co-planning a wedding.
@GirlyGirlBead: Good luck picking just a color or two. It’s like potato chips!
@Mrs. Lace: Laughing at Mr. Lace’s reaction! All the possibilities were considered and I came to the same conclusion. Tape > glued paper strips.@organicgal: Should we start a washi tape support group on WB?
@Kcoleybear: I have a feeling you’ll be one of the support group’s newest members after you spend some time on etsy!
@Miss Tartlet: Is it wrong that I mentally high-fived you?
@Miss Seal: Like all good craft purchases, I justified it by thinking of all the post-wedding uses. Why… I’ve already made cards with it (testing out the opacity)!
@Miss Giraffe: *cough*Thank you notes*cough*
@Miss Gazelle: You could use the designation for something else. Maybe showcase which part of your life each guest is from (college, family, work, etc.)?
