Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

As I outlined in my last post, before I even set foot in a bridal salon I was already a bona fide wedding-dress expert. I had put in the (wo)man hours, flipped through countless magazines, scoured a plethora of websites. My mom’s a college professor and I’m a grad student, so we decided that knocking the whole dress task off the wedding to-do list would best be accomplished during the summer months, when our schedules would be most flexible. With my massive wedding-dress-preparation ego, I made my first ever wedding-dress appointment, expecting to waltz right in, immediately and decisively pick a winner (trying on a handful at most), and reign victorious over the wedding-dress hunt.

Um, no. Not so much. Let’s start at the beginning.

In Search of My Dress-tiny: Me Getting Knocked on My Tush : wedding pittsburgh wedding dress Snocone

As I mentioned before, Johnstown isn’t exactly swimming in a deep wedding-vendor pool. As a result, it was a no-brainer as to which salon would be the first visit…Celestial Brides, Johnstown’s only full-service wedding salon. I’d shopped there for prom dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, mother-of-the-groom dresses, and my sister-in-law’s wedding dress previously, so I was pretty well acquainted with the salon, its staff, and its services. Nevertheless, I was still a bit antsy about kicking off this shopping process, since there’s so much riding on it: you only get one wedding dress in your life, and everyone looks at you all day in it, and your pictures will last forever, and all the episodes of Say Yes to the Dress you’ve watched over the past months have taught you that you’re supposed to find the one and not settle for anything less. But, remember, I was an expert! No sweat!

I walked into the appointment armed with pictures and style numbers of all of my current faves. Unfortunately, Celestial Brides didn’t have any of those exact dresses in stock, but they worked to find dresses that were similar enough to give me an idea of how that silhouette or detail would look on me. Now comes the fun part. We walked into the bridal room of the store, where there were probably 50 dresses in those ubiquitous plastic zip-up bags. Fifty—not as overwhelming as the stock room you see on TV at Kleinfeld, but enough to get me a wee bit frazzled.

I tried my best to hide my nerves and worries as I tried on a handful of dresses. To be honest, this appointment was almost a full year ago, and I only remember two dresses I tried on.

The reason I remember these two dresses? They made me feel something, just not in a good way. The first dress made me feel like a cupcake.

It was so big at the bottom but so fitted at the top, I just felt like a teeny tiny dollop of frosting perched atop a massive pastry. I love cupcakes, but for the eating, not the wearing. The second dress made me feel like this:

Mmmm-mmmm, check out those curves! Don’t get me wrong, I know I have a Gumby-esque physique, but that doesn’t mean I need my wedding dress to help solidify that fact. The second dress was pretty and feminine, but it did nothing for me, and I’m a girl who needs every piece of clothing I wear to do something, anything for me. Long story short, no winners in this bunch, but the staff at the salon were super nice and, on the plus side, I did walk away from the appointment with a few key pieces of information.

  1. I am horrible at figuring out what a dress will look like on a person after viewing it on a hanger or in a plastic garment bag. HORRIBLE.
  2. My certainty about lace and all that jazz was a little bit shaken. Celestial Brides didn’t have a ton of dresses that matched what I was looking for, so maybe lace dresses weren’t that popular any more and I was clinging to the end of a trend?

Could it be that maybe, just maybe, I didn’t know as much about dresses as I had previously supposed?! In a matter of about 60 minutes, I went from having the wedding-dress industry wrapped around my pinkie finger to groveling for assistance, reassurance, and guidance. Kind of like this:

There were a few that I tried on, I didn’t even need to see what they looked like in the mirror - just a big, resounding NO! :)

Oh no! That last photo made me so sad. :( I only had one appointment, but it left me torn between two dresses. I hope you had better experiences down the line!

I can’t believe they had only 50 dresses, that’s not very many for a mainstream wedding salon.

Hey, keep your head up girl! My first dress shopping expierence HORRIFIED me… Small towns have a limited selection sometimes, the first boutique I went to made me cringe at my body and the dresses I was even considering. Second go around went way way better though. At the second store I went to everything went great. I fell in love with the third dress as soon as I put it on and it was not at all what I imagined getting. BUT with that said, its the perfect dress for me :D. I just had to deal with some rude people, some ugly dresses and some low self esteem before my road to the perfect dress ended.

You’re so funny! As long as you feel like a million bucks in your dress, that’s all that matters. can’t wait to see what you choose, lady :)

I too ended up looking like a giant cupcake in a dress or two that I thought I would love.

P.S. I know that picture is sad, but how friggin’ cute is that dog??

Oh I can’t wait to see what you picked. Those are beautiful but if it doesn’t work for your body-type it is best to move on. It is a hard lesson to learn that just because it looks great online or in a magazine doesn’t mean it works on you.

All lace looked horrible on me. It made me look short and squatty (even moreso than normal!). I can’t wait to see what you chose!

I’ve been to 4 places…and only at Davids Bridal did I have a good experience with styles. I have a good half dozen dresses that look great on me, but I just have to decide what style I want. It’s frustrating seeing them look so good but them not being ‘me’

Heeeeee! I have to admit that it took me a LONG time to get the pun in your post title. I kept looking at it and thinking, “what’s a dress tiny? Like, a tiny dress?”

My first experience was an abysmal failure, but I knew things would only improve from there. Each store we visited (over the course of 6 months) got better and better… until I had a reason to stop searching. Good luck in your search!

The exact same thing happened to me! I had tons of lace gowns and gowns from Priscilla of Boston pics and I was terrified but I made PoB my first appointment and thought I would find my dress there. I went and tried on tons of dresses, hated the lace ones in person, and when I left, I felt like it would take me at least a year to find a dress! But my second appointment was at Marina Morrison salon when they were having a Lazaro trunk show…and I bought one! Eeek! I’m still scared b/c I have a year and a half until the wedding and I’m scared my tastes might change…but oh well. And I’m also kinda bummed I only got to go shopping twice. Poop.

Don’t be discouraged! It’s only the first trip! Go and enjoy in the experience of dress shopping for a while!

@Mrs. Octopus: yeah, I stared at it for a good while before giving in and hoping people would get it. Glad it came to you eventually!

@kate02121: I hate to say it, but I feel like low expectations are your best friend. It wasn’t until I visited a store with no intentions of finding a dress there that the magic finally happened!

@xtatic1: that, in a nutshell, is why I never had any dress doubt after buying. My shopping experiences had proven to me that I don’t have the slightest clue what looks good on me based on my assessment of a magazine pic.

My first shopping trip was pretty terrible. I went with my mom, my sister, and my MOH. Mom and sis kept picking out the most horrible dresses, filled with lots of lace (which my skin is way too sensitive for) and some terrible necklines. We went to two stores and I found nothing worthwhile. (One of them was David’s Bridal and I couldn’t wait to leave after how terrible our consultant was. She got mad at me because I wanted to try on more than two dresses!)

The second trip was great! It was just me and my MOH. She picked the dress out because she liked it and said she wanted to borrow it one day if I bought it. I thought it was not for me, but then I tried it on and LOVED it!

I feel your pain…I tried on quite a few dresses that were much better suited for the models and the mannequins! I ended up with a dress I really didn’t like on the hanger. Can’t wait to see what beauty you end up with :)

Small town salon=bad body image. All the dresses they had were in model sizes…not good for a size 12 girl who is trying to lose weight.
