Mrs. Jaguar, Sydney Age and Occupation: 27, Primary School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, IT Consultant Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2011 Venue: Curzon Hall About Me: I'm an Australian girl who is a self-proclaimed nerd, loves all things stationery and would be lost without books, music and the internet. Mr. Jaguar and I have been together for the past eight years and he finally popped the question last August. Hurrah! We currently live in Sydney, Australia with our adorable cat who thinks he's a person. We're a couple who likes to multi-task: we've been planning a wedding abroad, a permanent move from London to Sydney, and preparing to build our own home all at the same time. Travelling makes me giddy...as does Mr. Jaguar, of course!

Music to Sway to

April 19th, 2011 @ 6:41 pm by Mrs. Jaguar

How do you decide on the first dance you have as husband and wife? How do you narrow down the dozens of appropriate and swoon-worthy songs that are important to you both? What makes the one, THE ONE?

Since we’re both non-dancers and more of the awkward shufflers/swayers, we’re opting for a traditional, slow, and wordy first dance option. Here are some of our top contenders—though we’ve got one more special song in mind that we’re keeping to ourselves for now… who knows what we’ll choose at this point!? I’ll give you a hint though: it’ll likely be something by “our band,” thanks to the way we met and all.

You and Me – Lifehouse

The Luckiest – Ben Folds

Breathe In, Breathe Out – Mat Kearney

Look After You – The Fray

The Way You Look Tonight – Michael Buble

Looks Like Love – Needtobreathe {this is a cover, a GOOD one}

How did you choose your first dance music?

Like most things, I don’t believe in “the perfect” anything, because it doesn’t exist. But that being said, you can probably find something that means the most to you at the time.

For us, we already had a “song” if you will, so we used that. It worked well…almost. Chicago - You’re the Inspiration was the tune. Good, danceable, known by many.

May I make a suggestion? Ensure that not only does your DJ have whatever song you pick, but that you consider supplying it to him, or making him play it beforehand to one of your wedding helpers. We didn’t know that ours didn’t have it in digital or CD form — no, he only had it on TAPE. You can imagine what happened — about halfway through our dance, the tape broke, ending our first dance together. We just moved on, but it was….anticlimactic to say in the least. If nothing else, it gives us a laugh.

But….be ye so warned so it does not happen to you.

This was our first dance song too!

Reasoning: 6 years ago, when DH and I first started dating, he made me a mix CD to listen to while I drove up to see him - we were about 2 hours apart. Anyway, I found out 3 years later that “You and Me’ was a hidden track on the CD, he was trying to be romantic but I never heard it! Still makes me smile when I think about it! :-)

@Nathan Pralle: Good advice, N. I will definitely make sure Mr DJ has a copy of it… that works. :)

@Lindsay12.31.2010: That is so sweet! I know it’s a super popular wedding song, but I’m ignoring all of those stats and just thinking of ‘us’, ya know?

OMG! I love needtobreathe! I saw them live back in college at something called FishFest. They are amazing and always make me smile when i hear there voices.

I also loved that they are fairly God-centered :)

I love Mat Kearney (and The Fray), but I think you should definitely go with a Lifehouse song. I heard their new song today and I thought of you (I hope you don’t think that’s creepy).

@Lilubird: Funnily enough, we saw them OPENING for Lifehouse in London last year - they were AMAZING. I’m partial to a little banjo-loving!

@Miss Pony: That’s what Mr. Jaguar thinks too. He’s all for Lifehouse. And no! Not creepy! Very cool! ;)

How funny, I just had The Luckiest on repeat trying to convince the future Mr. that it just has to be the song! I love it!

Our first dance song was the easiest musical choice we made. Color me surprised!

I think I’ll be vicariously bummed if you don’t pick Lifehouse :)

My brother and SIL had the luckiest, and it sent romantic chills through the whole room!

@Miss Ostrich: *swoons* It’s the whole ‘I don’t know why, I can’t keep my eyes off of you’ that gets me. <3

@Christina: I adore it, but Mr. Jaguar had never heard of it until I showed it to him - and I think he wants one that we BOTH love!

@Miss Pain au Chocolat: That’s awesome! I can’t wait to see what you picked. :)

@Miss Snow Cone: Don’t worry, I’m 99.999% sure it’ll be the one. Or at least, the band!

@Miss Tartlet: Isn’t it just? *swoon*

I love “The Luckiest”! Bridesmaid A used it for her first dance as well, and I’d never heard it before!

Awwe, I somehow hadn’t heart that Lifehouse song before…SO good! They’re all great song choices but the first one takes the cake ;)

If you don’t pick the lifehouse song I will be one sad Koala. That song has been a favorite of mine for years.

When we (fiance & I) first started dating we listed to Jack Johnson non stop. Then we moved onto listening to Diana Krall.
For our first dance we first thought of better together by jack johnson, still not sure how we can dance to it (we are learning ballroom). So then we thought of The best are yet to come by Diana Krall and Tony Bennett… so we will see what the dance instructor thinks.

Does anyone has song ideas for the Mother - Son dance?

I have no idea what song we are going to pick! I’m hoping a lightning bolt of inspiration will strike me sometime soon. We’ve been taking swing dance lessons so trying to find a song that works with those moves and says the right thing? Tough.

Thankfully we already have a song so it was an easy choice (Golden Girl by Makoto and MC Conrad). It’s the drum and bass track that we both loved on a DJ mix we constantly listened to when we first met and it actually had vocals that made sense. It’s not traditional (being electronic dance music) and we do not slow dance to it but we’ll do so for the wedding. Most of our guests will have never heard it before but it is perfect for us (and neither of us dance to anything but drum and bass anyway).

We had some students that took The Luckiest and then about 1 1/2 minutes in turned into a mix tape, “Evolution of Dance style”.

My wife and I danced to “You Make My Dreams Come True” by Hall & Oates. We had struggled to find a song for our first dance (being dance instructors expectations were high!) and then one day I put my mp3 player on random and this song was the first that came on - knew straight away it was the right one, wife had never heard it before but she was sold once she listened to it too.

Better Together and/or The Best Is Yet to Come could both be based around a social foxtrot.
