About Mrs. Pony

Sharing Is Caring

April 19th, 2011 @ 5:53 pm by Mrs. Pony

Since Mr. Pony and I got engaged last March, five other couple friends (friends that are couples? I don’t know) have gotten engaged and are planning to wed in 2011. Out of these weddings, I will be a bridesmaid, maid of honor, guest, and, of course, bride. Needless to say, my life is pretty much all things wedding right now (which I love—not gonna lie).

Initially, I thought that having so many friends planning weddings at the same time would be super fun because we could bounce tons of ideas off each other. I know there are so many ideas I would love to incorporate into our wedding that simply won’t happen due to the location, season, or other aesthetic choices we have already made for our wedding. Naturally, I want to share these ideas with my friends who are brides-to-be.

Some ideas I would love to incorporate but sadly will not be able to include:

But, part of me resists sharing all of the wonderful ideas I see on wedding blogs or in magazines with my friends because I don’t want to impose on their planning processes. Weddings are such personal expressions of a couple, their style, and the atmosphere of their wedding day. While some ideas might work for us Ponies, they might not work for another couple. This includes the ideas that we choose not to incorporate into our wedding.

While I love talking weddings and sharing ideas with friends and other brides, I try to limit my suggestions so that I:

  1. Don’t come off as the crazy bride who is wedding obsessed.
  2. Don’t inadvertently pressure someone into choosing something for her wedding simply because I like it.

Constantly suggesting new ideas to a friend might seem like I am helping, but I realize that it can come off as critical, rude, or overbearing to someone else.

One thing I will never stop suggesting to my friends, however, is this (post weddings, of course):

(Someone please tell me that you do this in real life!)

Do you share wedding ideas with friends, or do you limit your suggestions?

Not quite lounging around, but I was part of a post-wedding photoshoot on the weekend just gone where we spent parts of the day in the lounge watching movies etc while the others were off having individual pics - 9 brides :)

I try to share ideas when it is a really good friend and I know that they are open to suggestions. Sometimes even pose it as “I wish we could have such-and-such for our wedding but it looks like it won’t work out.”

I totally do! But I think people get sick of me, so I’m trying to curb the habit.

4 of my bridesmaids were married within the past year and I was in each of their weddings- MOH for 3 of them. 1 bridesmaid is now newly engaged. After the wedding me and 3 of my bridesmaids and their new husbands are getting together for a quadruple date- in our wedding attire and the guys will put together their best thrift store formal attire! I am very much looking forward to it! it was nice having 4 close friends get married before us because we saw what worked/didn’t work for their weddings and have definitely “stolen” a few ideas.

This is one of my FAVORITE Friends scene. “Look at me! Do I LOOK like I’m concerned about what’s real??”

I love my dress so much that I’ve seriously considered seeing if any of my friends will do this with me; I hate that I only get to wear it one day.

I share here and there, but like you I didn’t want to really influence my friends’ weddings.

Hubs and I are probably going to get pics taken this summer since it rained all day and we couldn’t get our outside pics done. We bought his suit so we still have our full wedding attire

Everyone seems to think I’m “above and beyond” on wedding details and ideas so I’ve kept most of my ideas to myself. I do get super excited when I see a bee doing something that I wished we could have done.

I agree completely. I have a good friend at work who is getting married a few months after me and I try to limit what I suggest. I worry it will come off as critical of the decisions she has already made.

I think I read more blogs than most of my nuptially-minded friends right now, so stuff that I’ve come to think of as standard (like photo booths, for example), others see as blatantly over the top, unnecessary, overly dramatic, etc. So I just keep on keepin’ on with my own plans.

The majority of my friends are already married, so it’s the reverse where they share their experiences and ideas with me! I love it, and they’ve never come across as trying to pressure me into doing anything. It’s just super fun to talk weddings with friends!

I had a few friends we shared ideas with, but for the most part I kept mum unless someone asked something specific. I didn’t want to overshare or be too obsessed with weddings! That’s why I’m here. :)

i dont share because i’m the only bride right now, and one of my best friend is not sharing with me because she broke up with her boyfriend of 5 years (undersdantable so) but i only wish that she was a bit more involve and be happy for me instead of being so selfish…. sorry i got to vent out! :(

I’m in a similar boat! I had friends get engaged in August — Wedding in June (I’m a bridesmaid). I had friends get engaged in the end of December — Wedding in May (I’m a bridesmaid). I got engaged in the end of January — Wedding in September (I’m the BRIDEEEE). I had friends get engaged in March — Wedding in JULY (They’re crazy!) (I’m a guest). I have friends who will probably get engaged next month (ish?) — Wedding probably in late September or early October (They’re crazy too!) (I’ll be a guest again). CRAZY!! :)

I’m with you! I’ve got a few other engaged friends and while we definitely talk weddings, I try to limit voicing my opinions so as not to come off as overbearing.

Some good friends of ours are getting married two months before us and like you I was excited to have someone that I could talk weddings with all the time. I stopped sharing but for the opposite reason because everything I would talk to her about would seem to become her idea and it got very irritating after a while.

She was placed on a “need-to-know” bases.

One of my coworkers and friends is getting married a month after us. Our wedding ideas are so different I don’t think it has been a problem for us to talk about details. In fact, we’ve helped each other with vendors and she gave me some tips when my embossing attempts didn’t work out so well.
