Cakespiration––The Topper

April 20th, 2011 @ 10:42 am by Ms. Gazelle

This week I had one of those, “Wow, I really need to get a move on some things!” moments. One of those things has to do with cake. We are having our cake tasting soon, so I thought it would be a good idea to get an idea for styles of cake that we both like. Plus, if we are going to get a custom cake topper, then we probably better get that started!

I went to my number-one source for all things custom—Etsy. There are some amazing cake toppers out there! There was one for $180 we both liked, but add in shipping (and most likely duty) to Canada and it just seemed like too much to spend no matter how cool it was.

We both agreed that we loved the custom lovebirds from Bent Branch—handmade, customized, and well within our budget. I contacted the shop owner Krista, and she was in touch with me quickly with fabric colours and options. Here is an idea of what we will be getting:

The female bird will be white, the male bird will be grey. These are the fabrics, ribbon, and flower colours that she’ll be using:

We’ll also be getting glasses for the girl bird, plus a top hat for the boy!

Krista has been great to work with so far. I can’t wait to see how our cake topper turns out!

How are you topping your cake?

You know, it’s interesting…when my FI and I went in for our cake tasting, we had a pretty specific idea of what the cake would look like, and what the cake topper would be. But after talking with the cake designer, we ended up going in a totally different direction, which we both liked MUCH better than our original idea. This meant that our cake topper changed from a traditional bride/groom to two wine corks, all dolled up to look like a bride and groom.

These are too darling. I was wondering what to use to show that I do wear glasses, even though I’d be wearing contacts that day. Must check this out.

I never really got the bird trend, but to each his own. We’re going more traditional with actual people on our cake, but they are the most relaxed bride and groom I’ve ever seen– sitting on the edge of the cake, about to kiss, sans shoes.

I had fun painting her bouquet to match mine. :)

@Kathyf1323: Those are cool. I asked FI if he wanted to find bears for our cake since bears are a running joke in his family. (note my screen name).

Whoops, should’ve finished my thought there…
I ran it by him but he didn’t go for it. He was really gunning for Fry and Leela from Futurama, I loved the idea but just didn’t think they looked bridal enough. lol.

I got my bears at Cabela’s but you can buy them here: https://www.bigskycarvers.com/p-4037-wedding-couple.aspx

$21 but they look much more expensive than that

I was sooo excited when I saw this!!!! I had my caketopper made by Bent Branch last July. I absolutely loved it!!!! They did a fantastic job and were so easy to work with. Unfortunately, the cake topper never made it back to us after the reception and was lost forever. I was so upset!!! But i do have some cute pics of it, so that is good I guess. You will be so hapy with it when you get it, ENJOY!!!! It was one of my favorite decorations!!
