Mrs. Pancakes's Picture
Mrs. Pancakes, New York/Costa Rica Age and Occupation: 26, Law School Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Latin American Policy Analyst Engagement Date: March 12, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Casa Punto de Vista About Me: I’m a perfectionist with a big heart. I love a good laugh and firmly believe no one has ever regretted being prepared! My motto is “go big or go home.” I am incapable of doing anything in moderation, especially when it comes to shopping, TV, food and travel, and some would say wedding planning! The other half of this nearlywed team is a laid-back, adventure-loving, accident prone, sweetie from LA. He makes me laugh, is always down for an impromptu dance party, and totally indulges most of my hare-brained schemes. Now, in my final year of law school, we’ll be spending the spring abroad in Amsterdam and planning a DIY, whimsical, detail-filled destination wedding in Costa Rica!
About Mrs. Pancakes

Today was my very last day of class…EVER!! Like, seriously, I am officially both a JD and an LLM! TWO graduates degrees under my belt…how did that happen!!?!

OK. Well. Not “officially.” I still have to finish my thesis, submit one paper and take a final…but I’m oh-so-close. Once I’m done with that I can FINALLY focus on the wedding.

Speaking of which, we are getting married in ONE MONTH!!!! WOOOHOOOOOOOO.

As a little celebration, today after class, I decided to stop by a great little antique store on my way home. Here’s what I picked up:

So Many Projects...So Little Time : wedding costa rica decor My2bdo

As usual, I made an impulse vintage purchase and now I’m wondering, what should I do with them!?!?Originally, I was thinking I could use them under the centerpieces but I don’t think I’ll be able to get nearly enough. Then I was considering using them on the dessert table under the cake stands and such. Theeeeeeeeen, since I don’t have enough on my plate (*note the sarcasm), I thought I should MAKE something! Of course, why not?

How great is this?

{Made it}

While cutting them in half would allow me to get more bang for my buck, I don’t feel great about cutting apart vintage handmade doilies. The owner of the antique store spent nearly 20 minutes telling me about all the places her (recently deceased) mother bought each and every one of these doilies. I just wouldn’t feel right cutting them in half.

So the search continued and I found this:

So Many Projects...So Little Time : wedding costa rica decor Doily G

{Emily O /Elizabeth Anne Designs}

According to the DIY tutorial, you just have to iron and starch the doilies a little to get them to hang without flopping all over the place. This certainly seems like a viable option. It’s a simple DIY project that doesn’t complete destroy the doilies.

Best of all, when I told the owner I needed a small one to try and make a ring pillow, she threw this one in for free! She said “for luck and a great marriage.”

So Many Projects...So Little Time : wedding costa rica decor Ring2b

I was thinking I could just get some linen/burlap and make a little pillow and then stitch the doily onto the pillow. Then I found this:

So Many Projects...So Little Time : wedding costa rica decor Ring2b01

{Soda Pop Design}

It’s a DIY doily ring bowl! Granted the tutorial is in German but if you just stick the link into google translate its totally DO-ABLE! Unfortunately I don’t think the doily I have is great for this project but I thought the tutorial was so great that I just had to share. Someone make this and PLEASE tell me how it goes. Even if I can’t make this for our own wedding, its a great present for future weddings, and so adorable.

Does anyone have any great doily inspiration they can share?

I am using doilies as decor and a few ways I found is to sew them together at different points and make a table runner with them (you could use it on the card table or cake table or somewhere to dress things up) and I found a blog that adhered them to mason jars and then put a candle in the jar to give it a rustic glow. Here is that site: http://www.craftsbyamanda.com/2011/01/burlap-doily-luminaries-rustic-meets.html. Hope that gives you a few ideas!

I recently acquired a HUGE bag of vintage doilies of all sizes from my aunt’s mother in law (not technically my grandmother, but we were close anyway), and I am trying to find a great way to use them! I love the garland idea, but I wouldn’t want to cut them either!

Ooh! Are you having long tables for anything? (Guest book? Hors d’oeuvres? Cake? Favors?) You could also sew them together to create a kind of uneven, rustic looking runner. I saw a picture of one once that was gorgeous… I can’t remember where. I’ll post again with it if I can find it.

I have a doily from my grandma and had no idea what to do with it. And I was wanting a cute dish to put our rings in each night…this post came at such the right time; I’m totally going to make the doily ring bowl! Thanks, thanks, thanks!

I love the ring bowl! I thought about doing a doily garland, but after awhile it didn’t match the rest of our wedding anymore. Sad day.
