About Mrs. Candy Apple

Although I had a lot of apathy toward and uncertainty about finding my own wedding dress, I at least thought that I had a little bit of direction for my bridesmaid dresses. Not that picking them out was any easier than figuring out what I wanted to wear, but I knew at least one thing going into it - I did not want long bridesmaid dresses.

Okay. Phew. One decision out of the way. Hey, at least it’s something, right?

So, armed with that decision, I set out into the world of wedding blogs to try and find some inspiration as to what I wanted my ’maids to wear. Yeah, I suppose it isn’t as easy as simply narrowing down the length, huh?

At first, I wanted to go with a more non-traditional dress that doesn’t really scream “bridesmaid.” Something fun, and patterned - perhaps from Anthropologie (because we all know how much I love that store). I really liked how these dresses looked in bridal party pictures, and I definitely knew that my girls could wear them after the wedding, since they weren’t, you know, “typical” bridesmaid-esque dresses.

This route also allowed for the option of the girls choosing their own dresses, albeit within a certain style or pattern. We still want things to look cohesive, don’t we??

I love the look of this next one. Even though the girls aren’t all wearing the same dress, there certainly is a cohesive, uniform look to everything. The colors all fit together beautifully.

I love this look, I really do. When done correctly, it looks so elegant and fun. But, I had a really hard time finding the perfect non-bridesmaid bridesmaid dress. I also struggled going the mismatched route - I couldn’t find dresses that looked matchy, but not too matchy. And I’m a bit of a control freak, so I had a hard time envisioning myself relinquishing all control to my BMs (sorry ladies! I know you have great taste).

So then I thought, well, maybe I will just pick a palette for the dresses, and they can choose whatever dress they want in a range of shades. Bridesmaids with similar dress colors and in different dress styles look amazing. It doesn’t look too strained, and each BM gets to let their personality shine through by picking their own dress.

I still struggled with this, though - for some reason, I just couldn’t conceptualize the different styles of dresses I would want, and I wanted to be able to give my BMs some sort of direction. Plus, there didn’t seem to be many dresses out there in the color/ shades that I was looking for.

This led me to the whole scheme of the BMs getting their dresses from one company, such as J. Crew, that makes dresses in the same color and fabric, but in different styles. That look is chic, and allows for different personalities and body-types, but also keeps things cohesive.

I also realized during my search of inspiration that I do love the classic look of the BMs wearing the same dress. Definitely elegant, and it certainly looks nice in pictures.

I became slightly overwhelmed with all the different options. Bridesmaid dresses were definitely not the easy decision I thought they would be!

Which route did you go with your BM dresses? Completely non-matching dresses? Mismatched and patterned, yet cohesive? Similar shades, different styles? Same color and fabric, different styles? Or the same dress for everyone?

ok, we wither have the same brain or you and i have the same exact wedding inspiration folders - i have ALL of those pics and was laughing by the end. Wedding Twins!

my girls really loved that “dress you can wrap/style a billion different ways” by two birds - in slate gray. one of my girls got the mini with the rosettes on the border (um, gorgeous) and the other 2 got the short style and will wrap them differently. shoes, hair and accessories will be whatever they want. it’s not cheap, but they love that they could wear this dress to other fancy parties. :) can’t wait to see what your gals choose!

I made the exact same first decision - no long dresses! After that it was google image after wedding website searching for inspiration! I think the bottom line for me is that I want everyone to “match” and be cohesive, but I didn’t want my girls to lose their individuality! What I went with was the same designer, fabric and color and the girls could go figure the rest out. They all ended up picking a different style dress and they all are picking their own shoes, jewelry and hair styles.

Oh - I asked them to pick a crinkle chiffon dress from WTOO (Waters & Waters) in plum. I LOVE all of their choices and they compliment their body types!

Can’t wait to see what you decide!

I asked my girls to buy something they felt beautiful in. I’m not planning on any wedding ‘colors’ so I’m not too worried about a cohesive look. So far I have a girl in yellow, one in maroon, and one in a peachy pink. I think the last girl will be in teal, and my JBM will wear blue or purple.

I had a similar dilema. I wanted to do the different dresses with my girls so I started out by asked them what type of dresses they liked so I can start looking for something that could be cohesive. In the end, they all just kept saying I’ll wear whatever so I just chose a dress. It’s still a nice dress, but in the end I think they didn’t want to do as much work on finding their own dress and it was easier to just be told what to get.

I sent mine to JCrew and gave them a few choices. Thankfully I only have 2 maids and it’s um…wait, my wedding is in two months and one of them doesn’t have her dress. Le sigh!

Aside from hunting down the perfect venue. BM dresses are the bane of my existence!

I know I want chiffon, full or hi-lo length and beyond that I am really stymied. I don’t care if the gowns are all the same (or similar) style and different colors work too.

I really thought I wasn’t that opinionated about the whole idea until I started really digging in and window shopping - now more confused than ever!

I only have 2 girls so we went the matching route but a friend of mine that got married on the beach in Miami let her girls pick whatever they wanted as long as they were beachy-Florida colors. You had fushia, aqua, yellow, coral, etc and it looked fabulous!

haha, I have all of these pictures in my inspiration folder too! I ultimately went with matching dresses, but you’re right! It was such a hard decision.

I love the mismatched look, but I couldn’t quite commit to it. Can’t wait to see what you choose!

I tried to be democratic and let everyone kinda pick dresses that we liked and vote on it but they weren’t much help so I ended up deciding everything…

I picked the color for my bridesmaids and because my wedding is in summertime, they all opted to wear strapless dresses, my matron and maid of honor are wearing different colored dress that will complement my 2 colors for the wedding. (pink & purple)

I love, love, love the fact that all of Dessy’s lines use the same colors. I picked the color I loved and told my girls that they could pick any style (cocktail length) and to go with whatever made them feel beautiful. They had dozens to choose from–and all told me they had a hard time picking one because there were so many styles they liked. I love their final choices and love that they’ll be similar but each with their own personal style.

My girls will all be wearing different dresses but they will be the same fabric/color. Navy blue satin from Alfred Angelo.

I started off with one dress in three colors. Then the dress was discontinued and wouldn’t be in until 3 weeks after my wedding (this was 12 weeks out, and NO ONE had ordered their or scheduled a fitting. As it is, I’m 3 1/2 weeks out, and one BM still doesn’t have a dress.)

I have had those peachy-pinky dresses from SMP in my inspiration folder for-EVER! I took a “whatever you feel comfortable and glamorous in” approach to the BM dresses, and surprisingly everyone ended up with the same dress (in the same color). I never thought our bridal party would be uniform!

I went with all matching from the start. Doing the non-matching matching would’ve been too hard for me, I think (even though I love the look of it!).

I have all the same inspiration pics, love them ALL. I’m telling them the color, and setting them free. I have spent far too much time worrying about this. I’m in love with the idea of mismatchy but cohesive, so that’s what I’m crossing my fingers for. Second option would have been what you are doing…same company, same color, different dress :)

Sigh..Miss Candy Apple..I loved your post! :) I too had begun my BM search in the hopes that my girls would wear dresses of the same color but different styles…but alas, that wasn’t to be. For me it turned out (not completely by my choice…) that my girls ARE wearing the same dress/style/material. Though I’m trying to make things a lliitttle more individualized now by giving them all different jewelry to wear! :O) Good luck!
