Location Proclamation

April 21st, 2011 @ 5:19 pm by Mrs. Pony

I am going to rewind a bit for this post (reverse reverse, everybody clap your hands).

Like most newly engaged couples, one of the first things Mr. P and I decided was where our wedding festivities were going to happen. Basically, we had three options: 1. my hometown; 2. Mr. Pony’s hometown; or 3. a tropical destination. We thought long and hard about the benefits and drawbacks to each option. Well, not really. But we did make a pros/cons list for each option and picked the one that worked the best for us and our loved ones.

My hometown—Bloomington/Normal, Illinois

Pros: the most traditional option; all my family lives here; a lot of our friends live within driving distance (under two hours); planning proximity; familiarity with the area

Cons: ALL of Mr. Pony’s family would have to travel at least six hours by car; not exactly known for its amazing wedding venues or scenery (unless you like fields of corn and beans)

Mr. Pony’s Hometown—West Tennessee

Pros: close to Mr. P’s family; very pretty location

Cons: my entire family would have to travel; vast majority of our friends would have to travel; would have to plan long distance; only marginally familiar with the area and venues

Tropical Destination

Pros: beaches; sun; drinks; vacation; beautiful pictures

Cons: cost + everyone must travel = less of our friends and family would be able to attend; less control over details; less DIY; possible language barrier

Also, how would we ever choose from so many gorgeous locations?

While we really wanted to go the destination route, I couldn’t shake the guilt I would feel over:

  1. Making people spend so much money just to attend our wedding; or
  2. Having so many friends and family miss our wedding because of the cost and location. We want our people to be able to attend our wedding, and we want them to not go broke while attending it.

We decided to leave our dreams of the beach for the honeymoon instead.

So, we were down to one of our hometowns. Unfortunately, either way one of our families would have to travel to make it to our wedding. So, it came down to the location that would make the most sense to us. For the ease of the majority of our guests, we decided to have our wedding in Bloomington-Normal. While not known for being a mecca for wedding activities, it will (hopefully) be more detailed and personal because of this decision.

How did you decide on the location of your wedding?

Awe good choice! I live in Bloomington and I really do like it. I think it is small enough to not seem like Chicago, but still has some things to offer! Goodluck on the rest of your search! I know a great photographer in Normal….imaginate photography by Bridget barnlund. Wonderful work!

We struggled with the destination wedding thing too :) ultimately, we chose Sea because it’s where I am from, and most of my family as well. It’s tough when you’re not from the same city!

We considered a destination wedding, too. :) And also left it behind because we knew so few of our family and friends would be able to attend. It’s been a lot of fun planning things locally, though, and having friends/family involved along the way!

@Alyssa Gibbs-Boggio: Yay B-town!
@Miss Candy Apple: Agreed, we just had to choose and hope everyone we love can make it!
@Miss Tartlet: If we knew more of our friends and family could make it, we totally would have gone DW, but it has been nice to be so close to the planning.

You will still have a great time planning things locally. They you can take an amazing honeymoon somewhere warm and beachy. ;)

Our decision pretty much only had one option for us, but it’s still a hassle to think of how EVERYONE (outside of my family and a handful of HS friends) will have to travel, and that travel is kind of cumbersome, given how off the beaten trail we are. Oh well… that’s what friends are for, right? To drop uncomfortably large amounts of money to celebrate huge milestones in your life?

I grew up in Bloomington too and am getting married there in June! I also graduated from law school in May and just love reading your posts! Its fun to finally see something Bloomington-Normal related on a wedding blog especially as it is not a mecca of wedding activities!

I live in Peoria [fist pump] (anyone else about sick of this weather???) We debated at first with having a destination wedding, it seemed easier, fun and just like it would be a great time. We ultimately decided to have the wedding in our hometown because we really wanted to celebrate with our family and friends. We knew most people would not be able to come to a destination and let’s face it, I love big, elaborate parties where lots of people are dancing and drinking :) So hometown throw down it is.

We sort of always knew we would be non-traditional and do it in either my fiance’s hometown, or on the outskirts of my home”town” (NYC). But we quickly decided his hometown had some more original options, plus his guest list is so much larger that it makes sense for the majority of the guests.

I just wanted to make this whole process as painless as possible for ME (ha), so we decided to do ours where we live now!
