Mrs. Seal's Picture
Mrs. Seal, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 25, Personal Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Sales and Support Specialist Engagement Date: December 12, 2009 Wedding Date: November 2011 Venue: Sts Peter and Paul Church/The Bently Reserve About Me: I am a goofy, wannabe crafty, well-intentioned Renaissance Woman (OK, perhaps "aimless wanderer" is a more aptly suited term for me, but hopefully you get the point)—basically I dabble in just about everything and pride myself in such. Without warning, I occasionally breakout into soulful improvised songs and interpretive dances and there's just no stopping me! As so many others before me, planning our wedding has unearthed a deep, intense passion for all things bridal and I secretly fear the day it will come to an end. Mr. Seal and I are quite the pair and life with him by my side is extremely rewarding—I am so thankful to have found him. Together we are planning a black-tie San Francisco affair for 250—light on the stuffiness and with lots of extra Seal-y flair.
About Mrs. Seal

Remember the dream reception site that became our actual reception venue? Well, in my excited haze, I forgot to mention one tiny detail—it’s a completely blank canvas. By blank canvas I mean that it comes with nothing, and by nothing I mean…absolutely nothing. There will be no chairs, no tables, no stock linens, and no glassware included with the rental. The Seals get the main hall, two side lobbies, a mezzanine, and two bathrooms. Oh, and a light switch that will turn on the ginormous chandeliers.

At first I saw this as a good thing. We would have the opportunity to dress this place up any way we wanted—Ghost chairs, Chiavari chairs, wooden chairs. Heck yeah! The possibilities were endless. Unfortunately for the Seals, however, we do not have an endless supply of cash to fuel any and every wedding-day vision, so the excitement was short lived.

Though Mama and Daddio Seal have graciously offered to pay for the vast majority of the wedding, I in absolutely no way want to take advantage of their generosity. As such, it has been a top priority for me to find the absolute best deals on everything. (I get my jollies snagging deals anyway.) From my experience finding bargain deals on designer bags, I knew that I could have the wedding I always dreamed of without gouging my parents’ bank accounts—I just needed to do some research.

My first order of business was to look into rental companies to provide our chairs and tables. After we established our color palette, I knew I wanted gold Chiavari chairs and that nothing else would suffice. Boy was I in for a swift kick in the arse. I soon found that, unless your venue comes with the chairs, THEY ARE NOT CHEAP. (I’m talking $11–15 per chair here in San Francisco, people—not including setup and breakdown.) I continued researching and found equally horrifying rates for tables, glassware, silverware, and linens.

Silly me: I hadn’t factored in all of these costs, and that made me sad.

Finding someone to do the setup and the breakdown was also a big priority for me. While researching the rental companies, I found they charge overtime rates for a “late night pick-up,” and seeing as how all of our wedding day has to be cleared out of the site by 3 AM, a morning pick-up during regular hours was not an option. This left me with three avenues to explore: hire a wedding coordinator with a team who will figure all of this out for me, pay loads extra to have a rental company set up and take away everything, or enlist the help of my friends and family.

I immediately knew that I didn’t want to ask our invited guests to work on our wedding day. I know that this method has been very successful at other people’s weddings and I admire that, but I couldn’t see how it would work at mine. The main reason being that I know I will want nothing more than to eat a late-night snack and crash after the reception—how could I do that with a clear conscience if my equally exhausted (and quite probably inebriated) guests were working away at cleaning up my wedding?

Thankfully, before having to seriously consider any of the options, I was introduced to the magical world of full-service catering. Apparently our venue’s list of preferred caterers only includes companies that will provide everything—setup, food, rentals, and breakdown. After some preliminary investigation, I found this was not only going to be more affordable, but more convenient as well. Double win!

Now I just had to research all 15 of my venue’s caterers. Sigh.

What kind of rentals, if any, does your venue provide? Who is setting up and breaking down everything?

I am an OOT bride so there was no way I could do what you are doing. I would have loved to have my vision brought to live but the thought of looking for vendors for certain things just sent me back to looking at an ‘all inclusive’ place. I am sure you will come out ahead. I love to bargain shop too :)

You’re so lucky that your venue can provide you with these contacts. I knew before I even got engaged that although I love these special venues with interesting pasts, there’s something to say about full service venues where I don’t have to think about anything other than flowers. I love chevari chairs and knew how pricey they were so I was super ecstatic when I saw that my venue already had them as their chairs. I’m sure your wedding will be venue once you put some paint on that canvas ;)

I think you could literally put nothing in your venue and it would still be gorgeous, but it is awesome that you found a full service caterer that can fill your space with even more beauty.

Gah! $11-15/chair? That would totally make me a sad panda. :( I’m glad your venue provided you with some full-service contacts, though! And, I’m with Pony–your venue is magnificent “as is.” I can’t wait to see how you choose to decorate it, though!

hi miss seal! i’m getting married at sf in june (we are church twins). even though your caterers will provide chairs & such, still look around elsewhere for the best deals. my fiance found chiavari chairs for around $6, whereas our caterer offered them for $9. he asked if we can get them for the cheaper price and we were able to! never be afraid to simply just ask because the worst you can get is a no. happy planning! :)

I LOLed at the sad seal. Love this venue, also! And the caterer and florist brought everything down and took the garbage, rentals, etc. out and the venue cleaned up after they were gone. I was NOT about to cart shit home myself!

I love that the seal’s nose kind of looks like a heart if you squint. I also love that you found some vendor magic to help fill that gorgeous space.

I have an incredibly awesome coordinator at our reception venue, who has coordinated my linen rentals. The restaurant comes standard with everything else. Having a good reception coordinator makes all the difference in the world.

One of the reasons we picked our venue was because it includes tables, chairs….everything! I can’t imagine how overwhelming it must have been trying to search for vendors for all of this. Good luck with the full service catering narrow down process!

I work for a rental company in the bay area (Burlingame). If you want, I can give you a quote on the rentals. Our chairs are NOT $11-$15 each! Union Street and Global are people we work with regularly. They are amazing. Not sure on the price.

This is one of the venues we’re considering as well. However, I didn’t realize that it didn’t come with the tables & etc. Is it possible to get a price quote on how much it is to rent the venue itself? Thanks!
