Mrs. Brooch's Picture
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

A Few Last-Minute Faves

April 25th, 2011 @ 6:27 pm by Mrs. Brooch

There were a few last-minute details that added a lot of pizzazz to our big day. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to blog about them as they were happening! There was so much going on with the wedding (everything from dress fittings, to moving, to designing and formatting our programs) that I hardly had time for blogging!

That home stretch was insanity. Be warned!

There were a lot of little projects I put off, too, like the labels for our dessert bar. I’d tried to create these over and over again; tried using cardstock (multiple ways), tried using pre-made templates, and nothing was working.

I heart liquid chalk…

With just a few days left until the wedding, I had to use what I had at home because there was no time to buy anything new. My maid of honor ordered liquid chalk for our larger chalkboard signs and I loved it! The stuff is really easy to use and makes writing with chalk as simple as using a marker! The stuff was perfect for these little chalkboard stickers I ordered months prior, too (discovered by Mrs. Stripes). With a little cardstock, the liquid chalk, and stickers, I created pretty labels like this one to adorn our dessert bar.

I fell madly, deeply, in love with these labels! I was tickled with the way they came out and could not wait to see them in action on our dessert bar! Did anyone know they were mini chalkboards? I’m not sure, but I knew and I was damn proud!

I also heart Victoria’s Secret robes…

The next last-minute detail is one that I’m dying to see in our professional pics! I ordered lovely personalized beach bags for each bridesmaid, but the bags were huge and I needed something to fill it!

If you look back through my previous posts, you’ll see that one of my obsessions were pictures of bridesmaids in matching robes. A robe was the perfect filler for our big bags, so I sprung and got each girl a cotton, pink-striped, hooded robe from Victoria’s Secret. They LOVED them!

More and better pictures of these on the way!

At the cross, at the cross…

My absolute favorite last-minute detail is the cross that we had as the focal point for our ceremony. I had no idea whether my dad would take my request for a life-size cross seriously or whether he’d have time to create it, but he did!

He brought it to me just two days before the wedding and we decided it should be spray painted white. The finished product was just gorgeous! I mean look at it here in my grandmother’s garage! Imagine what it looked like in the garden at Oxon Hill. It made such a statement, and I loved it! Thanks Dad!

There was also this brooch in my hair! I can’t wait to share about this detail because my hair and getting ready turned out to be quite the fiasco. Did you notice I changed my mind about how I wanted to wear my hair?

Well, I had nothing to tie it back with, but my hairstylist had this lovely brooch clip she had bought to actually wear in her hair! She threw it in mine at the very last minute and it was such a hit, let me tell ya! Mr. Brooch LOVED it and so did I because it was the most awesome little ode to Weddingbee!

I’m kind of obsessed with chalkboards right now. Does the liquid chalk wash off well?

Also, love the brooch!! So perfect and pretty!

@mclove:You’re right! I didn’t even notice! @Miss Pony: Yes, the liquid chalk wipes away like magic, which is what I loved about it! @jamielkbaker: They are going to look fab!! @Miss Lox: Yup, I went with it down, but I paid the price: STRESS! Haha. I can’t wait to tell that story!

Geez, a HUGE one for us… I didn’t think at all about the fact that the pastor would need some kind of a table in our winery grove ceremony site to put the Communion elements on. He and the DOC coordinated on the day of the wedding (seriously it must have been like the hour before I walked down the aisle) to roll a wine barrel up to be framed by our ceremony arch. Absolutely MADE the focal point of our ceremony setup. The photo of our guests waiting before the processional, just looking down at that barrel with the wine and the bread lying on it, is absolutely my favorite of the day.

I THOUGHT I remembered your hair being different in your pre-wedding planning… glad to know I’m not going crazy. I have a feeling there’s quite a story behind that, Brooch :)

LOVE the liquid chalk. I used to work at a restaurant that wrote the daily specials with liquid chalk, and I always took over the duty, because it’s sooo much fun.

I love your hairpiece! It looks amazing!!
