About Mrs. Hyena

Bier & Vino

April 25th, 2011 @ 5:38 pm by Mrs. Hyena

When we thought about previous weddings we’ve attended, very few have had a full bar. Most of them have served just beer and wine. That ended up working great for us, since most people in our families really only drink beer and wine.

Honestly, I don’t know much about alcohol. I know I like red wine. I know I like cosmopolitans. I know I usually enjoy shots with inappropriate names. Aaaand that’s about the extent of my drinking knowledge. Since Mr. Hyena’s family is German and he actually knows things about beer, I left that particular beverage in his capable hands.

For ummm, RESEARCH! YEAH! we took a little trip to Shiner, Texas, to visit the Spoetzl Brewery, and yummmm. Mr. H suggested serving Shiner Bock as our beer. Sounds good to me!

I approve. If you like touring breweries, this was a fun tour and you get to taste several varieties of Shiner!

These are various beer coasters we’ve collected. Some we picked up in Shiner, some were taken from local bars, and some from Germany when Mr. Hyena visited last summer!

We stumbled upon our wine by accident. You see, I have this wine rack, and when I moved to College Station I wanted to decorate it. As a great wine connoisseur, I went to Wal-Mart and picked all the bottles that were under ten dollars and had cute labels. I proceeded to drink none of them. Until…

The day after we got engaged, a friend of mine was hosting a Texas wine night, and we were all required to bring a Texas wine that cost less than ten dollars. I went to my wine rack to see if I had anything that fit the bill and discovered that one of the wines I had picked up at Wal-Mart was Llano Estacado’s sweet red. (The winery is in Lubbock.) We brought it. It was freaking delicious.

On separate occasions, we tasted their blush and chenin blanc wines as well, and I was pretty impressed. I’m not a huge fan of white wine in general, but both Mr. Hyena and I liked the chenin blanc. Nice and light and fruity. I think these will go well with our hors d’oeuvres. Even though it was good, we’re not going to serve blush. (Do a lot of people like blush?)

So there you have it! We’ve got our alcohol! Local and delish.

What are you serving at your wedding?

It’s so funny you mention Llano Estacado Winery…I am from Lubbock. I absolutely love their wines and I think you will do well using them for your wedding.

This is the best part of wedding planning, in my opinion :)

I agree with Miss CA! I can not wait to have our wine tasting! We are getting married at a winery so we obviously will have wine and beer but since I am a huge lemon drop fan we opted for a full bar. They just won’t serve shots (which is probably a really good idea!).

Ooooh, local booze! Chenin Blanc is an under-appreciated varietal. I’d love to source local wine and beer for our reception but the state’s liquor laws require anything we pour to be available through a distributor, which is not the case for the wine/beer we want. This is not stopping us from having the rehearsal at a brewery.

@mclove: I’ve never tried the gewurtztraminer, but I have tried some of Messina Hof’s wine before! It’s good too. :)
@Miss Candy Apple: Haha, yes, the alcohol and the foooood.

Hooray for supporting local! I’m not experienced with wines, but I’ve been so impressed by the vineyards in MI. We’re going with the house wines at our venue that were oh so yummy!

Texas wedding in May… you may want a rose (the more polite word for blush) :). It’s refreshing and a good rose will complement all your food without any problem. In warm weather, a rose can be just the thing to please a crowd.

It always makes me do a double take when I hear about buying alcohol in Walmart. Here in Maryland, alcohol must be sold in a designated liquor store–no grocery stores, no walmart, etc. Something about old-timey blue laws I think? If you ever visit MD, you’ll understand why there’s always a liquor store next to the grocery stores. :-P

@ItsPronounced_ABear: I’m with you… in PA, you never see alcohol except for at beer distributors and state stores. Every time I travel, I do a double-take when there’s a wall of Budweiser next to the bathrooms in a gas station.

Oooh, I love a good rose! Haha I would have to say that i actually prefer that over white — but that’s just me, haha. You know what your guests normally drink!

Shiner was one of the beers at our wedding!

@ItsPronounced_ABear: At least you guys don’t have the state stores. ABC stores in VA are such a pain! Though being able to buy beer and wine at the grocery store makes it worth it.

And I looove Shiner Bock! We’re doing very local wine (from the vineyard we’re getting married at, ha!) and would love to do local beer. Maybe Dominion ale…. We’ll have to do some “research” at Beer Fest this summer. ;)

We’re doing wine and beer only, too!

We are having a few kegs of Widmer Hefeweizen (we’re now Oregonians, and are therefore beer snobs!)
Being from Napa, that’s created a pickle. I want Napa wines at the wedding, but they’re proving to be too expensive. I think I’ll end up getting a Sonoma red and white. Whatever is good but affordable.

I am not a big drinker. I do like to have a glass of wine and I will drink most any sweet wine, as long as it has ice in it.
