About Mrs. Pony

I wish all wedding-related decisions were as easy as picking out the bridesmaids’ dresses was for me. Before I officially asked my girls to be a part of our wedding (more on that later), I chose the dresses for them to wear and asked them to buy them. Yeah, I KNOW, but let me explain.

I have been enamored with J.Crew bridesmaids’ dresses for quite a while. Their dresses are well made, use fabulous fabrics, and come in great colors. But I didn’t like just any dress: I was smitten with a particular dress.

J.Crew

I may or may not have (but definitely did) fall in love with this dress after seeing Mrs. Cherry Pie’s fabulous ladies wear them at her wedding. I mean, seriously, how pretty is this?!

These dresses are equal parts casual and formal and, most importantly, they can be worn again.

Then, one fateful day a few months after getting engaged, I was perusing the J.Crew website when I noticed that the pretty vintage burgundy color I was coveting was being discontinued.* I wrote a lightning-fast email to all my girls asking if they liked them and whether we should order them. At this point, our wedding was more than a year away and I was worried about ordering the dresses prematurely.

But, these dresses were CHEAP. As in less than $60. With shipping. Since all of my girls are either in grad school or recent graduates, this was a huge bonus. The ladies ordered them, and we have waited patiently for the dresses to arrive at their respective doors.

So far, half of the ladies have received their dresses and love them (or at least that is what they tell me). I am keeping my fingers crossed the dresses work for the other girls as well. And, since we decided on the bridesmaids’ dresses so early, we have ample time to decide on shoes and accessories! Yesssss!

I am a little sad we didn’t get to have the traditional bridesmaids’-dress-shopping experience, but coordinating a time that worked with busy ladies who live out of state, are in the middle of medical rounds, and are busy with their own lives would be nearly impossible. I think my girls are thankful for the time and money saved, and I got to cross something off my ever-expanding to-do list. Win-win-win.

Was your bridesmaids’-dress shopping simple or stressful? Did you find any great deals?

*At the time we ordered the dresses, it appeared that the vintage burgundy color was going to be discontinued, but J.Crew has never removed the vintage burgundy color from their lineup.

It’s a good thing everyone got their dresses early! I just checked the site and the price has more than doubled!

Ummm… does saying “wear a costume” count as easy decision making? ’cause… that’s what we did, lol.

For guys and girls, we told ‘em to just get a fantasy costume, which has led one girl to go the entire gambit of what she should get. The other, I think, is still pondering. (I’m hoping she comes as Marion to match her bf who’s going to be Indiana Jones. Doubtful, but it’d be soooo cute!!!)

I did the same thing with J. Crew! I stalked my dresses (same style in light shell) until they were on mega-sale. Being honest with myself, I know the girls probably won’t ever wear them again, but at least I can feel good about knowing they didn’t shell out a ton of cash.

We are doing these same dresses in a different color. I too got them at under $60 out the door and shipped. My girls absolutely love them and said they would use them again!

I love these dresses!! And the cost couldn’t be better (well, it could…but that is highly unlikely, especially for the quality & how cute they are!) :)

I got this dress (in a different color) for a wedding I was in last year - love it! You got a fantastic deal…I paid about $150 for mine :( But at least I’ve actually worn it again!

I own this dress in Emeral green. I purchased it 4 years ago when the color was (temporarily) discontinued and on sale. 2 friends have borrowed this dress and I have used it as a guest to a few rehearsal dinners and weddings. In fact, I also tried to check it out as a bridesmaid option, but, alas they had nothing near my color… So happy you got it!

This dress is super cute, and the price makes it even more so. I love that you got the task of dress shopping out of the way in such an easy and effortless manner. More time for other things!

This dress is such a classic shape and color, you can’t go wrong! Great choice! I went the JCrew route too and like you, missed out on trying on dresses with friends but was very happy with what we ended up with!

In short, no. BM dresses were a nightmare of stress for me. But in the end I ended up with a look more or less what I wanted. They’re all short and horizon blue from DB, but 3 different styles between the 6 ladies.

Those red dresses are GORGEOUS!

I am SO envious of your low-stress BM selection!

I wore this dress as a bridesmaid and loved the style of it! Plus it looked great on everyone. I just wish it was in a color I would wear again (ours were in kelly green).

I really wish JCrew had midnight navy in more styles, I really wanted to pick one of their bridesmaid dresses, but a lot of them were really short on my taller girls! So instead I went with the Dessy Twist Dress and they all love it!

Tip: Have your bridesmaids get their dresses pressed ahead of time to get out any creases from shipping! A lot of the bridesmaids in the wedding I was in forgot to have this done and couldn’t get them out the day of…

@Miss Red Velvet Cheesecake: Yeah. Crazy. Apparently they go on super sale in August.
@Ryna: That sounds awesome!
@MeghanV: Exactly! It was really important to me to keep the cost down, and I’m so happy I did.
@FutureMrsLeggett: Awesome!
@soontobeMrsEschberger: They could be free (eh, Jcrew?), but that’s not going to happen.
@Miss Tartlet: Thanks! The color is exactly what I was hoping for!
@bmarie12: I actually have it this dress in navy (worn for my MOH’s wedding) and I haven’t worn it again either, but its got a lot of potential especially considering I have 5 other weddings this year!
@MuddyInsignia: I’m glad to hear you’ve gotten so much use from this dress!
@Crown: Hell YES! You read my mind :)
@Mrs. Trail Mix: After shopping for BM dresses for another wedding, I kinda didn’t miss it. Too much pressure.
@ItsPronounced_ABear: Sad it was such a pain, but it sounds like your girls will each get dresses they love!
@Miss Snow Cone: Hehe, I promise I’m not rubbing it in!
@NewportBride923: Yeah, great advice. I definitely didn’t do that for my MOH’s wedding and her mom had to do it for me the morning of the wedding (I’m a bad BM). Steamer going on the registry now…
@Miss Elephant: Thanks!! You’re back and married, yay!!

For cheap dresses, I would be okay sacrificing the “bridesmaid dress experience”. I’m sure most women wouldn’t mind missing out on it since they’ll inevitably do it for another wedding. Great find!!

Cute AND cheap!? WIN!!! I’m with PaC—I’d definitely forgo the dress shopping experience in favor of saving my ladies some cash (you’ve still got a bachelorette party comin’ your way, anyhow!)

Aha - I recognize this dress! I wore the same one, in the same color, for my friend’s wedding in October. I wish I knew you when you were having your bm’s buy them - I totally want to sell mine! Drat! ;)
