Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

If the Shoe Fits…

April 25th, 2011 @ 12:32 pm by Mrs. Snow Cone

As I mentioned before, one of the reasons I’m holding off on trying on my dress is that I don’t have any of the accessories that transform you from a girl in a white dress into a bride.  This realization kind of hit me like a ton of bricks—I figured once I got the dress squared away, 99% of the work in creating a bridal look would be done. I guess I was sort of resting on my laurels for the past few months, patting myself on the back for finding a dress so early in the planning process. However, now I really need to kick it into gear and start planning what I want to look like on my wedding day. Sure, I have the dress, but what about a veil? Some jewelry? Makeup? Hair? Nails? Shoes? Obviously I am not 99% of the way done with creating my look, as I had previously assumed. Buzzkill.

With that being said, I’ve spent some time over the past few days thinking about and looking into shoe options. Before sharing my ideas and inspiration with you, I think it’s important that you get some necessary backstory: I’m about 5’6″ and Mr. Snow Cone is about 5’9″. I’m not a huge fan of being taller than him (I guess I’m a traditionalist at heart), so I very rarely wear heels…usually just on specific occasions or if I’m trying to look extra polished or dressy. Both Mr. Snow Cone and I like the look of heels, but only from the knee down, so to speak. Check out a quick glimpse of our engagement pictures, where we managed to sneak in heels without throwing off the whole height thing:

Because I’m not a high-heel type of gal, when I do wear them, it’s usually not a pretty sight. My feet are usually crying out in agony, with my little piggies all squished to high heaven and the arches of my feet feeling like I’m walking on nails. I’m getting better, bit by bit, but they still are like attractive little death traps for your feet. So, to recap, I don’t like my height in heels, I don’t like the way my feet feel in heels, and I don’t have a lot of experience with heels. Obviously they wouldn’t be the best bet for my mega-marathon of a wedding day, right? Despite my reservations, there’s something undeniably bridal about high heels, not to mention how adorable some of the options out there are. I decided to buck up, fight my high-heel anxiety, and look into some shoes with modest heel height to counteract the height and discomfort issues. Here’s my front-runner:

I like the low but still identifiable heel, the satiny wrap effect (which should complement my dress nicely), the fact that these shoes come in many colors so I could go traditional or modern in my hue selection, the peep toe to take advantage of the August warmth, and the extremely manageable price of about $60, give or take. I had unofficially decided that these would definitely work “well enough” to be my wedding shoes, and I wasn’t terribly interested in looking elsewhere, unless these heels turned out to be so uncomfortable they give my feet PTSD or something. I was all set to try these on in-store and be done with it, until I actually decided to bring up the topic to Mr. Snow Cone.

Simply put, he isn’t interested in having a bride who’s taller than him (or even close to being mistaken as taller) on his wedding day. He doesn’t want to have to worry about craning upward in every picture to snag every extra fraction of an inch he can get. He doesn’t want my feet to hurt at all over the course of the day, given that we’ll be on our feet for probably upwards of 12 hours when all is said and done. And, as he said kindly but bluntly, he likely won’t see my feet for more than about 30 seconds here and there, so he’s not terribly invested in what my shoes actually look like. His vote? Flats.

Without a doubt, I agree with him on pretty much all fronts. I want to be comfortable, and I don’t want to have to find a way to gracefully try to slouch in pictures to compensate for the height differential. (OK, I know all this height talk sounds weird, but both Mr. Snow Cone and I agree on what we want our pictures to look like, so we’re just going to roll with it. Judge away, if you please.) But I’m not really sure if flats seem “bridal” enough to me.

Did you decide on flats for your wedding? Have any suggestions as to where to look for ideas?

There are tons of cute flat options out there! Let’s meet in Philly and go shopping ;)

I’m definitely going the flats route, and it’s not because of any height discrepancies. Comfort is what I’m going for on That.Big.Day, and so I plan to find the most deliciously comfy flats I can find, and will glam them up with some Swarovsky crystals for that pull-up-the-dress-to-show-the-shoes photos.

I’m dealing with the exact same conundrum you are.

I like the way heels make my calves look - long, slim, nice in photographs.

I do NOT like the way heels make my feel feel if I walk around in them for more than about 40 minutes.

My partner, like yours, is also about 3 inches taller than me (5′7″ to 5′10″) and is not keen for me to be taller than him on the wedding day. He also rejected my suggestion that he wear man platforms to even up the height issue.

All this would suggest I should wear flats, but I just don’t feel like I have the legs for it! Or rather, I feel like I’d need to lose another 10lbs (off my already low-ish weight) to make them look gamine rather than frumpy.

I wore flat JCrew rosette sandals! :) They were bridal enough for me (I’m a flip flop girl at heart) and I never once complained about my feet.

You could always go for a short kitten heel. There are some really cute options out there in a one inch kitten heel, or a slight wedge.

I hear you on the height talk! My fiance is just slightly taller than I am, and while I love my heels and generally do not mind being taller than him in them, on our wedding day I don’t want him leaning up to kiss me :) Also, our outdoor venue is not very heel friendly… so I’m rocking these gorgeous sandals:

I wore flats and LOVED them! The were purple (one of our colors) and had a flower on them, so still dressed up. They were like sandals.

My FI is about 5′9 and I am almost 5′3 so when I wear heels we are ALMOST eye level. When I asked him he told me that he isn’t worried about it. It won’t hurt to get flats or even a small heel as long as he will still have some height… Happy shopping.

I thought the “love flats” that Mrs. Scissors wore for her wedding were absolutely adorable. I don’t know what brand they were, but you can find em in the archives. I think flats would be fine, there’s only like two times you’d see a bride’s shoes anyway - stepping down from the altar and the garter toss.

Hehe…my groom wore heel lifts, I think they were about 1.5 inches? He was originally very against the idea, but I wanted to wear heels! I’m 5′7 and he’s 5′11; they’re basically just super thick insoles. amazon.com has a ton of options, that’s where we ordered from!

I have similarissues regarding the height difference. I have two pairs of shoes. A 1 inch kitten heel and what I term “The Cutest Flats Ever” hey are pointy toed and have rhinestones. I find the pointy toe has the same slenderizing effect. Oh this isn’t a suggestion just me talking about my wedding shoes cuz I LOVE THEM SO MUCH! (see all caps proves it)

Luckily Mr. G is way taller than me so I haven’t had to contemplate this. However, I went for relatively short heels at 2.5″ and my MOH and BM will both be rocking 4″ platform heels so they most likely will be taller than me. Oh well.

Honestly, high heels themselves don’t have to hurt. I find there is a huge difference between good high heels and bad. I’d suggest trying Seychelles as their shoes are often quite comfortable. Good luck in your search!

For me I am a heels girl all the way!! But after I sprained my ankle a few years ago I unfortunately have to limit myself to 3″ tops (I know big whop LOL) anyhow my plan for the big day is to get my beautiful bridal shoes and break them in and if they should happen to start bothering myself I have my favorite go to pair of strappy sandels that never and I mean NEVER bother my feet so those will be on standby

For some reason I just cant dance in flats LOL and having my heels on just gives me that extra boost of confidence LOL

My fiance and I are the EXACT same height, so I will be wearing flats for our wedding. I found mine on Zappos.com

As someone who is pretty much the exact height as her fiancee, I can relate! I like the suggestion of the heel lift above (and don’t forget tux shoes have a bit of a heel).

One thing to keep in mind…my seamstress informed me that if I had to get my dress hemmed, it would be an additional $150 in alterations. As much as I don’t want to tower over my sweety, saving $150 helped us both deal with it. :)

Definitely considering flats, as FI is taller than me, but in heels, we are the same height! I am also considering a 1.5 inch heel only for comfort. :)

That shoe is my frontrunner too! In the navy blue to go with my theme & be my “something blue.” I too wanted flats to prevent me from being taller than my “not-shorter than me but a little shorter than me in heels” fiance. But, I got to thinking I may close too flat to the ground and awkward in flats. I’m still debating.

I’m 5′3″, and Mr CB is about 5′7″, so we’re pretty similar! He doesn’t care too much about heels, but I feel weird when I’m the same height as him. I was going to go for flats, but found my dream shoes and their heel is 2″, so not bad.
@pinkpaperbride: I hadn’t thought about heel lifts for him… I don’t know if he’d be for or against the idea!
Two of our bridal party members are over 6′ tall, so we’re both going to look short no matter what we do. :)

I kind of compromised - my mother and grandmother were shocked when I first talked about flats, and since I am 5′3 and my fiance is 6′2, there is a definite height difference. I got a beautiful pair of shoes (the ulltra-g Steve Madden in gold glitter) for as long as my feet can handle it, and a simple pair of flats for when I am running around getting pictures done and dancing once my feet hurt.

I’m also in a similar boat (althougth a little different). I wanted to wear a 4 inch heel and bought a beautiful pair, but then when i went to try on my dress for the first time, i realised the max heel i could wear is around 1-2inches. so now i am on the hunt for gorgeous pair of 1 inch kitten heels, but i’m finding it really difficult! i think 2 inches will be too high so ideally need 1 inch. Any suggestions out there?
