About Mrs. Hyena

One Thing I’ll Miss

April 26th, 2011 @ 11:30 am by Mrs. Hyena

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this yet, but we’re going to be rocking an iPod reception. I’ve been working on playlists and am having a lot of fun doing it. But I had totally forgotten about something that I’d always really, really loved about weddings: the anniversary dance.

I don’t know if this is a regional thing or not, but in case anyone doesn’t know, the DJ will call all married couples out to the dance floor, and they usually play a song like this:

Video via YouTube

Then, the DJ starts eliminating people from the dance floor. First, people who have been married less than a day (bye, bride and groom!), then less than a year, less than five years, less than 10…up until there’s only one couple left on the floor—the one that has been married for the longest. At the end of the dance, that couple gives the newlyweds their advice for a happy and lasting marriage.

I love love love this tradition. It’s so cute, and I love to hear the different advice given.

What I didn’t put much thought into was that this may be difficult with an iPod wedding. Sure, we could play “Remember When” (even though everyone uses it, Mr. H and I danced to it at our senior prom so I have some attachment to it), but without an emcee I wasn’t sure how it would work. Bridesmaid A is manning the music, but she is also married and I didn’t want her to miss out on the anniversary dance just so she could emcee it.

Thank goodness for FSIL Hyena, though, who volunteered to emcee for this song. I would have been really sad if we didn’t get to take part in this.

Are you having an anniversary dance? How about any other special dances?

We are using the song “Then” by Brad Paisely for our anniversary song. I love it!

We’re not, even though I love the tradition. Both FI and I have had grandparents pass away in the last few years and it would be heartbreaking to not have those couples honored for their “til death do us part” marriage. We’ll be honoring their marriages in other ways, but it breaks my heart that my grandparents won’t be sharing the advice from their 55+ year marriage together.

Best of luck with your dance (sorry to be a downer!!)

I also LOVE the anniversary dance! We are using Journey’s “Faithfully”…. We are doing it a little different in that the DJ will invite guests onto the dance floor- Ex: bride and groom, then one year, two years, etc. until the last married couple is on the floor. This will just keep people on the dance floor, instead of having them leave it :)
PS- we are also getting married in May! Best Wishes to you and your groom!

I’m not sure if we’ll do this. I love the sentiment, but we have a lack of long happy marriages in our families (sad, but true) and I don’t want to upset anyone (oh, drama). I love that AJ song though and I hope you can do this for your wedding!

I love this idea but as a PP just added, I’ve had some deaths in the family and this would just highlight it. It’s a good sentiment though.

I haven’t thought about doing it but it is a sweet tradition! However my fiance’s father passed away 6 years ago so I am sure it would make his mom really sad to see all the couples out there. We also don’t have any grandparents left on either side so I think my parents would be the last on the dance floor… 45 years!

We aren’t having an anniversary dance, but I always enjoy witnessing it at weddings. :)

I seriously love this idea but, like @Miss Pony, we have some divorces in my family, and I wouldn’t want to make people feel bad :( I do love it though!

I just recently even heard of this tradition, but I love it! The variation I heard though was that you give the couple something– a gift card, a bottle of wine, or something like that… Not sure what I’ll give yet, but I think I like that idea better than forcing them to speak.

We’re doing this too! I’m excited about surprising our guests with it since we are skipping other traditions. As PP have said, we have had a string of recent deaths and Mr. PaC’s dad is remarried. But he is on board! I’ve already picked out a song that I know the winning couple will love.

the first time I heard (read) about aniversary dances was here in WB.. I think it’s super cute and I’d love to do it, but my grandpa just broke his leg, so I’ll be lucky to have him at the reception for a few hours :( I cannot do this with my grandpa in a wheelchair. can I?

about the special dances, future hubby and I are dancing a romantic salsa song we both like a lot, and then a slow paced electric guitar song I absolutely love, so we can dance with our families (me with my dad and his, and he with his mom and mine)

I never heard of that either! It sounds really cute! I just know my FI’s parents will win. 40 years strong!

We did this. We used Kenny Roger’s Through the Years.

This way my favorite part of our reception. We played “Love Like Crazy”

We had TWO winning couples - both at 58 years! They were my grandma’s siblings (though I wish she had been around to see it). Secretly, I think DH’s grandparents were disappointed when they got out at 53 years - and there were still 4 couples left!

We’re not doing this because too many of our family members have lost husbands and wives recently. I’ll miss it, but I know it’s for the best.

@ItsPronounced_ABear: That’s a really good idea. I hadn’t thought of that.
@Miss Pain au Chocolat: Ooh, I can’t wait to see what you picked!
@Lighter: Hmm, that is a tricky situation! I’m glad you have other dance options.

@Miss Red Velvet Cheesecake: Whoa, congratulations to them!
@afbacher: I love that song! One of the only reasons I didn’t pick it: my family are die-hard Apple fans, and the mention of Microsoft wasn’t going to fly with them! ;) That’s amazing that you had so many couples married over 50 years!
