Mrs. Lox's Picture
Mrs. Lox, Baltimore Age and Occupation: 33, Government Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35. IT Consultant Engagement Date: May 8, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Vandiver Inn About Me: I’m an East Coast gal born and bred and a suburban brat turned city rat for the last year. Now Mr. Lox and I enjoy walking all kinds of places, having the coolest things around in our backyard, and especially our garage parking. I love gadgets, toys, Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby ice cream, monkeys, and our insane cats. I’m a blonde by birth and a redhead by choice. I’m that girl in the cubicle farm with all the cool toys and the file cabinet covered in magnetic poetry. I still use smiley faces in my emails, whether people like it or not. This is not the first rodeo for Mr. Lox nor me. And together, we are planning an intimate afternoon wedding on a budget we can afford by ourselves.
About Mrs. Lox

So the other trial I had this weekend was my makeup trial. I know…busy busy!

Unlike my hair trial, I didn’t go in armed with inspiration pictures. I did show her pictures of my dress and give her a general idea of what I was looking for. Basically, I want to look polished and have my skin look fantastic. I’d like a sort of natural look but with some oomph to the eyes. And of course, I had to go in bare-faced.

Here’s the deal. I know you all love a confident woman. And I’m totally cool with who I am. But who I am is a chick who doesn’t leave the house without a little bit of makeup at the very least. So what I’m showing you here is a testament to my love for you all. And visual proof of why I wear makeup even to the grocery store.

Trials and Tribulations – The Makeup Version : wedding baltimore makeup trial 17 Makeup-less Lox

Right then. If we can just forget that ever happened, I’d be grateful. Moving right along…

I had her take pictures at her house at different points but what I really wanted was to get home and get a picture in the same spot and the same lighting as my makeup-less picture was. So I hurried home and we got this…

Trials and Tribulations – The Makeup Version : wedding baltimore makeup trial 27 All made up

Now let’s analyze. My skin looks fantastic. The lipstick is good. But outside of her house, I’m thinking my eyes are not… enough. I also think I might like a little pink in my cheeks instead of just bronzer. Honestly, it’s okay. This is why we have trials. But I have to figure out how exactly to fix it. And to be even more honest, if I were already great with makeup, I wouldn’t be outsourcing this.

So hive, I need a little help. What can I tell her to get my eyes punched up a bit more? I’m thinking my brows need to be filled in more. (The makeup-less photo clearly illustrates why I don’t leave the house without applying brow powder. Ever.) My lashes need to be more prominent. We already discussed some individual lashes though. Do you all think going that direction would help? What about more eyeliner? And will it all hold if I’m a crier? Because I totally am. (She says the lashes will hold. What about the liner?)

You guys, you’ve already helped me so much. Can you give me just a few makeup words so I can properly ask for what I’m after here? I think I’m seriously lacking lingo. ;)

I agree she should definitely pencil in your brows - it will give you a lot of definition for photos, especially. I also totally agree with you that a pink blush will give you much more of that “bridal glow” than just a bronzer would!

I think that adding individual fake lashes would help accentuate your eyes a bit more and she could definitely go heavier on the shadow - I don’t know how I’d explain that, but maybe an inspiration photo (at least for eyes) would help her visualize how much and what colors of eye-make up to use!

Your skin looks fantastic with or without make-up - I’m jealous!!

Are comments being a bit buggy…??

I wore fake lashes for my wedding. I’d never tried them before, so I was a little freaked out, but I loved how they looked in pictures.

Also, I cried off and on throughout the entire ceremoney, and my lashes were still perfectly attached at the end of the night.

I recommend them, if you want a little more pop.

I would say its a good start, but not a dramatic enough bright and vivacious look.

I would start with your eye brows. They should be filled in more and slightly darker. Its amazing what eye brows are capable of when they are more prominent.

Next, I would add a nice pinkish, rosey blush to compliment your skin tone.

For your eyes, I would say DEFINITELY add the individual lashes, especially on the outter corner of your eyes. To give the bright eyes effect I would take away the dark liner on the inner of your bottom eye lid and use a white or nude color to give the appearance of a bigger brighter eye. You could then add some darker eyeliner along the lash line.

I would say to add a bit more of a blush color to your lips, to compliment your gorgeous skin tone and to go along with the pinkish blush I mentioned.

Im not an artist though, thats just what I can envision on you.

Okay first, shut the eff up - you look GORGE without makeup on!! Jerk.

Anyway, the makeup looks good too! :) I think maybe darken the brows a bit, and I think the individual lashes will help a lot; they did in my e-shoot pics!!

Beautiful, Loxy.

Your skin and lipstick are perfect. I agree with your assessment on your eye makeup, it needs more oomph (obviously I know what I’m talking about using such technical terms). I think a peachy orange shadow would really bring out your pretty blue peepers and would complement your skin tone. And some pink blush, because I love blush and feel the need to advocate for blush for everyone.

OK this is just opinion, but I like the foundation and thats about it, the eye liner is ok, but needs to be extended just a bit on the sides (maybe using a deep brown), fill in the brows for sure, the eyeshadow color is terrible, I think bronzes and browns would do so much more for your eyes (not frosted, but with a tad of glmmer) skip the individual lases and use a full set. The blush is in the wrong place, it should be more on the apple of your check and definantly a pinker shade, your lip color needs to be brighter and more of a pink also (I am not talking like pepto pink, but a blush or mauve type tone) and a little powder would be great. The brown tone she has on you will make your teeth look brown in pro pic shots. You are so gorgeous, I think the person who is doing your make-up may not be very experienced with fair skined people with red hair, you have to know how to do it without making you look painted. Good Luck and I hope you don’t think I am being awful, I just think you deserve the best.

I think the problem with the eyes is that I have small eye lids that disappear when I smile. I swear to you, if I made a serious face there was visible eye makeup. Maybe I just need to show her these pictures so we can work around it?

As for the brows, I feel ya’ll completely. I fill them in darker and heavier than this for my every day makeup honestly. She filled them in but it didn’t do much. I’m sure she can tweak that right up on the day though.

given that you commented that your shadow becomes harder to see when you smile, maybe ask your MUA to sweep some more noticeable shade up into the crease, extending the colored area? Maybe that way, there would be more of a visual draw to the eye area, even when you smile.

On a whole, though, you look fab!

i popped in here to yell at you too but i see that candy apple has already done that for me. ;)

i also wanted to chime in on the no eyeliner on the bottom lid and some rosy blush would be so pretty.

I LOVE YOUR EYECOLOR. sorry, that is all.

I actually like your makeup a lot! I agree that maybe a pinky, fresh tone on your cheeks would be really pretty. Another thing - a photo from your at-home lighting really isn’t helpful in determining how it’ll look on your wedding day. It’s better to simulate your wedding day lighting as best as you can. (Take a photo outside close to the wedding time of day/and then indoor not in a bathroom - depending on your wedding day plans). I really love your look!

oh one more thing- if you’re worried about small eyelids, i was curious if monolid eyeshadow application would work for you? typically for asian eyes without the crease but since it extends farther, it might work for you too. too!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRNioZry7Cg

I agree that you should have a full set of lashes and not just a few individual ones–make a statement with those gorgeous blue eyes! More blusher is a must (you know that) as well as brow definition. In my opinion I would lessen the eye liner on the inner corner of your eye but keep it on the outer corner (will make them appear more open). And it looks like you have a pink on your eye lid–hard to tell in this photo but a mocha color is what I would prefer. Especially if you are a crier–no need to make the eyes more pink/red then they need to be! Even if you don’t change a thing it will all still be great though!

You look great! Definitely go for the lashes…and I’d do a full set, not just individuals. Practice wearing them once before the wedding because in my opion, they feel a little funny the first time. Your skin is beautiful in both pics…lucky girl!

You look beautiful without makeup, Loxy! Individual eyelashes did WONDERS for making my eyes pop, and I have no eyelid crease whatsoever. Gawd, I lurve your hair and eye color.

I think more pencil on the brow, maybe a nice peachy creme blush because of your great hair color, and more shadow! But your skin looks great and I love your lip color. I did my makeup trial recently and I kept having her do more and more to my eyes because it wasn’t coming across bold enough on camera.

I think your skin is TO DIE FOR. Seriously. Love it. Maybe some more colour in your cheeks would spice it up a bit - and a tiny bit more dramatic around the eyes? As someone who sucks at all things makeup, I fail at the terms needed - but I went back and had a second run and felt MUCH better about it afterwards.

You’re going to be stunning. I can’t wait to see your whole look put together, L. xx

1. I agree with Snappy, a before/after photo in more natural lighting (or, more closely resembling where your wedding photos will be taken) will make a WORLD of difference. Will you have a second trial so you can take advantage of that thought?

2. This is just a thought (one that a lot of people seem to not agree with, but whatever… I’m throwing it out there)… Does your face turn red when you cry? I’m specifically asking because I’m thinking about my cousin’s wedding a while ago. His now-wife looked great as soon as her makeup was done, but by the time she walked down the aisle she looked like a complete clown because she blushes when she’s on the spot/crying/nervous/showing pretty much any emotion. She has similar skin and hair coloring to you, fyi. I couldn’t help but think if they had laid off the blush, it may have not looked like “enough” beforehand, but when things really mattered (e.g., when she was getting married, and during the reception), her natural inclination to turn pink would have shown through the foundation to be a much more pleasing shade.

Again, this is just a thought. I’m no makeup artist, I just know she doesn’t look like a clown day-to-day, and she didn’t when her makeup was done, but by the time she came down the aisle it was awful.

3. Agreed on the eyes. I think lashes and a bit more dramatic eye (just a bit) would be great.

4. Stop with the “forget that ever happened” thoughts! Your bee-utiful!
