Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!

Dress Shopping Déjà Vu

April 27th, 2011 @ 2:27 pm by Mrs. Snow Cone

As I previously mentioned, my own dress-shopping process wasn’t exactly calm, cool, and collected. Instead, it was more frustrating, anxiety provoking, and confusing. Regardless of all of those bumps and bruises, I ended up with a dress I couldn’t be happier with, so it just goes to show that an annoying process can still definitely result in a happy ending. And all I have to say in response to that is thank gawd because it appears as though we’re going through the dress ringer yet again, with BM dresses!

I ventured out into the big bad world of Pittsburgh bridal salons with MOH H to find a BM dress, or a few BM dresses, depending on how things played out. She was only visiting for about 36 hours, so I naturally placed a ridiculous amount of pressure on this outing, determined to finalize my choice(s) and be done with it. And, like all well-intentioned plans, it went into the crapper pretty quickly.

First stop—we went to The Exquisite Bride, where I got my dress. They carry a few lines of dresses that have caught my eye; plus we get a 15% discount for having a large bridal party and as a reward for purchasing my dress from that salon. Not bad! After MOH H graciously tried on about 15–20 dresses, we walked away with a few contenders. Take a peek. (Warning: picture barrage ahead.)

Dress Shopping Déjà Vu : wedding bridesmaid dress pittsburgh Img 14403 IMG_14403

Bill Levkoff 578: Simple, but it didn’t really trip my trigger. Plus, there’s a sizable bow in the back. ::cringe::

Dress Shopping Déjà Vu : wedding bridesmaid dress pittsburgh Img 14404 IMG_14404

Jasmine P39003K: Once again, not too bad, but didn’t knock my socks off. Probably too plain for my taste.

Bill Levkoff 532: This was my personal fave coming into the trip, but it didn’t garner a positive review from MOH H or my madre.

Bill Levkoff 372: MOH H’s least favorite and my mom’s favorite.

DaVinci 60003: I liked this one because it was different from the others, with kind of a more youthful look. But after looking at the photo, I’m struck by how poorly it photographs.

Bill Levkoff 528. My personal fave of the trip, but I can’t shake the thought that in two years, a one-shoulder BM dress will just SCREAM 2010–2011. The horror!

We then headed to the local Alfred Angelo. I had high hopes for this store, since it would likely be an easy option for my ‘maids all over the country to visit a store, try on the dress, and get measured. I also knew they had a set number of colors and lengths, so it would be “easy” to find that mix-and-match look I was considering with different necklines and silhouettes. Welllll, that didn’t go according to plan. Of all the AA dresses MOH H tried on, only one was really photo worthy.

Alfred Angelo style 7122: Cute, but probably not as well received as the other options from the first salon.

So, even though I was hellbent on knocking this decision out in one day, the wedding gods have conspired against me to get me to take a step back and re-evaluate. The good news? Um, not too much. I’m less convinced that I want short dresses, and I’m wavering on my commitment to satin as a material. I’m trying to look at the positives…if I’m willing to reconsider the length and/or fabric choice, I’ll open myself up to a host of new possibilities, which could be a great help! I struggled to find my own dress, so it’s only fitting that I should struggle a bit to find the other dresses in the wedding, too.

Did you walk away from your first BM-dress search empty handed?

My girls are wearing the BL 528 in eggplant! I didn’t think about the one shoulder thing going out of style in a few years, but oh well! The ruching in the dress is so flattering - I love it.

Shopping is the worst when you feel so much pressure to find something, no? I’m sure you ended up with something great in the end after all your hard work!

I had one BM like the BL 372, but the rest all hated it. They thought it would be way too tight to dance in all night long.

I really like the one-shoulder style, too! I’m really clueless and didn’t realize it was a trend until recently. I just think it makes your shoulders look great. :D

My girls all found there bm dresses on the first trip at Alfred Angelo’s. My one bridesmaid actually tried on the dress your bm did. She got a similar one to that except without the sash around it. It did have a synched waist though, so it gave her a shape.
But good luck!

My girls are wearing all different dresses, in the same AA color Lavender. We had luck with it! The saleswomen weren’t very helpful, but we managed to get all of my girls different dresses that flattered them..

Why not check out dresses in other fabrics? Satin wrinkles like crazy.

I feel your pain and its a good thing I still have over a year to sort this all out because the BM dresses have been quite a challenge for me!

I am outfitting four ladies, one of whom will be 15 the day of. Most of them have very large “blessings” (as we call them in our family), so we have the age gap challenge: 15-41, plus blessings, plus trying to tie in a vintage look.

I’ve told the BMs different colors - okies
Different styles - mmm if we have to
Different hemlines - more what I prefer

Strong contenders have been Dessey 2832 (which I loooooveeee but isn’t vintagey enough) and Alexia Designs 2106 - only I’m not in love with the bodice of either…planning on having BM Extraordinaire (BM C) and her aunt sew them using two merged patterns more like the Alexia gown, if the price is right. *phew!*

Eventually I’ll have wedding porn to share!

We actually just found dresses we love at Alfred Angelo, but that’s why the process is so challenging - because it’s different for everyone!

you should try out some of the bill levkoff in the chiffon materials…my gals each found one they liked! If you’re going for the fitted style I would recommend the one my sis got…it is classic and I can def see it looking good on anybody!

I went into the bridal salon with tons of ideas in mind, after trying all the styles that we thought we “liked” we ended up deciding on Bill Levkoff-528 in European Sable & for my MOH’s the Alfred Angelo 7122 in Tealness & Mocha. :) I LOVE those dresses!

I had a hard time chosing the dress bc of the fact that some girls have larger boobs than others & what not. All in all I think my girls are pretty happy with the decision that I made! ;)

Good luck on your hunt! :)

I have worn that black Bill Levkoff 532, as a bridesmaid and I will say that is hands down the most universally flattering dress I have ever seen. Bigger girls (me) looked perfectly curvy in all the right places and the tiny girls (think size zeros) looked just as good.

Love that dress. Have worn it at least 5 times after the wedding. Seriously!

I also am a Pittsburgh bride, although alot closer then you. And I also purchased my wedding gown from Ex. Bride. If you are still looking for BM dresses try MB bride in Greensburg, that is where I found mine (they were super expensive at the store, so I actually ordered them offline for $70.00 cheape). But at least the BMs got to see it in person. And they have a boatload to choose from.
