About Mrs. Cinnamon Bun

I revealed our two minimoons, and if you may have noticed that neither destination has “…beach, sunshine, and people to bring me drinks with umbrellas in them all day long…” Don’t worry hive, I didn’t give up my dreams that easily.

Once we decided to take two little trips this summer, we thought we’d postpone Costa Rica until later this year/early next year. Do you know what this means? This means that we will be going somewhere warm in the winter. Let me say that again in case you missed it: WARM in the WINTER. It might be my fault for living where I do, but I spend the majority of winter whining about how cold it is, how much I hate cold, hate snow, hate my snow boots, hate my puffy down coat, hate the wind chill… you get the picture.

To give you a hint about what bothers me so much, here are some visual aids:

Pretty, yes. Also FREAKING COLD. You can tell it is FREAKING COLD because I’m standing on a lake. (Lake Louise, for the curious.)

Exhibit B: I took this photo the night Cinnamon Buns and I got together. Our dating anniversary is June 18. No, that was not a typo, I did mean June. (The picture was taken in Banff.)

Exhibit C: This was my birthday morning this year. I’m an Aries, so I’ll let you figure that one out.

This is 3 AM after the stumble home from birthday / closing night beverages at the bar, and an impromptu snowball fight. (Cinnamon Buns made a snow angel, and walking by it every day for the next week did make me smile).

More fresh snow on my walk to work, April 14th, 2011 (that taxi is photo-bombing me!).

So if you consider winter as ‘months in which it snows’ our winter is September – May (with the odd freak snow or hail storm June – August). The worst part is definitely November – February though. We walk to work every day, no matter the temperature or the conditions, so I walk to work in -35C some weeks in the winter. Luckily, although we’re still getting snow now it at least isn’t that cold anymore. Calgary also gets these awesome warm winds in the winter that warm the whole city up 20C in a day, but that isn’t the point! If you want more Calgary climate data, here’s a handy little table on Wikipedia.

The point is that once I thought about it, it seemed silly to go somewhere warm while it was warm here. Why not actually make good on all those “next year I’m spending winter in the WARM!” whines I have, and do it for reals? We’re not certain exactly when we’re going, or for how long, but this year we will escape the grossness for at least a week! I expect to cry at the airport when we get back. We’re not planning on planning any of that trip until after the wedding though—my head might essplode. I’m already looking forward to it, and anticipating the joy of packing shorts into a suitcase while wearing two sweaters and my woolly socks with the thermostat cranked.

Did weather influence your honeymoon?

(Heh, I just realised that I did a whole post about Costa Rica with only snowy photos!)

Yeah…..I love Canada, and would love to move there for the politics, but I just can’t take the weather. We’re leaving Boston to seek warmth elsewhere…even Toronto is too cold for us!

@crayfish… not all of Canada is cold! Vancouver is quite nice with mild(ish) winters! It’s why we have so many homeless people!

Wow and I thought Vermont was bad since we have winter from October to the end of April/early May. I’m the same way I whine all winter, maybe I should try to find a way to plan a warm winter vacation. That sounds like a truly fabulous idea!

Yep, you summed it up perfectly. Although I see the Calgary chinooks as a step up from Edmonton, which is just cold straight through. We’re honeymooning in early October, so I won’t be surprised if I come home to snow on the ground!

I think it’s really cool that you’re standing on Lake Louise in the winter. Just really cool. My birthday was the 16th of this month…woke up to 8″ of snow that morning–just so pleasant, isn’t it??!

We went to Jamaica in July even though we live in North Dakota (I think you’re one of my closest Bee neighbors, if not the closest!!) and it would have been smarter to go in February. Had to do that ’cause of school. But you guys are smart to go when it’s cold!!

I didn’t even consider the possibility of snow…Hmmmm, any tips for the Banff or Lake Louise area? Never been before but all keep reading about is the grizzly population! Maybe we’ll switch our vacay for some sun….!?!

I lived in Costa Rica for the better part of a year, and let me tell you - go in the winter time! That’s the dry season there (december - april), and it’s really nice then. I personally haaaated the rainy season. It would literally rain so hard that if I got caught outside in it, it would feel like someone was throwing buckets of water on me. Yuck! So two reasons to go to CR in the winter - avoid the crazy weather in Canada, and avoid the crazy rain in CR!

I would die in one winter in Calgary. Seriously. -35C? -ANYTHING and I’d die. I cry and throw fits when it’s below 55F :/ I feel for you, CB—Costa Rica is definitely calling you next winter (I’d say you two deserve it) :D

We are having a winter wedding (which I’ve always wanted) and the Mr. wanted to keep the theme going through the honeymoon. No Way! I put my foot down on that one. So glad you are getting your warm honeymoon. I can’t wait until we decide on our destination!

Yes, weather is certainly influencing our honeymoon–and we are planning a mini-moon as a result. Our wedding is September 3 in CT–we have wonderful warm summers hrere–and that is really the last weekend of summer. We are planning to honeymoon taking the trans-Siberian railway from Moscow to Bejing by way of Mongolia. I really want to go when it is on the cusp of winter–so I can say I been to Siberia in winter. But we do not have enough time off to accomplish this immediately after the wedding, so we will likely wait until spring (early March).

In the meantime, we are considering a mini mooon to Iceland and enjoying the hot springs there. Hmmm… like you, we are worried we would not appreciate a beautiful warm place like Costa Rica enough when immediately after a beautiful CT summer.

Going to Costa Rica in the winter is a fabulous idea!!! And can you believe we might get snow tomorrow morning? Yikes!!! I was born in late May in Calgary and it snowed on the day as I born and several birthdays thereafter.

Holy crap, CB, I figured Canada was cold but had no idea it snows year-round! Thank goodness for Texas and our 100-plus degree summers! I too hate cold. ;)

Miss Cinnamon Bun, I can completely relate! I ran away from Northern Ontario winters, not just for a week, but to a new permanent home in California! Though, at times I do really miss the change of seasons!

However, I feel that I need to clarify your post as there has been some confusion. Yes, winter in Alberta can drag on (and on and on) but they still warm summers, and beautiful warm days in the winter where it is over 70F.

Oh I can totally relate to this post!!! We’re located about 14 hours north of you! (We love it when a roque chinook passes through)

We’re planning on doing the same thing, heading out on a honeymoon in the middle of the winter to take advantage of some sunlight!! and warmth :).

Although I’m actually more excited about the sunlight than the warmth :) AND Costa Rica is my number 1 choice also.. Everytime I look around, someone I know is going, or it’s being written about!!! :)
