I'm not afraid to poke fun at myself, and I'm a believer that given the right pair of shoes, a girl can conquer the world. While an interest in the sciences threw Mr. Tartlet and me together (again, and again, until it finally stuck), we share a love for many things---food, video games, car dancing, food, bad puns, travel, did I mention food?---that ultimately led us to where we are now, less than five months from becoming Mr. and Mrs. We're planning a laid-back, romantic, garden-inspired affair with organic and quirky touches that reflect our love for the unexpected!

A Flip Side to Wedding Favors

April 27th, 2011 @ 9:11 am by Mrs. Tartlet

I have a fondness for tchotchkes that dates back to my elementary school years: my enthusiasm for carnival and cake walk prizes was unsurpassed (I was also quite a competitive little bugger). It’s no surprise then that I look forward to seeing what the bride and groom’s wedding favors are! Double happiness candles? Score. A pair of porcelain love birds? Awesome. A bookmark with the bride and groom’s photo on it? Still use it to this day. However, when it came to our own wedding, I was conscious that a good percentage of our guests are of the “WTF do I do with this?” persuasion. I started researching alternatives to traditional wedding favors and quickly gravitated towards a slew of edible alternatives. S’mores, anyone?

These “cowgirl cookie” kits make for some mouthwatering gifts. I received a variation of one for Christmas a couple years ago, and it was de-lish:

Who wouldn’t want to get a chocolate chip cookie the size of your face? I’ll take two!

Homemade jams are simply scrump-diddly-umptious!

Because the Tartlets love to bake, the edible favor route was incredibly appealing for adding a personal touch to the wedding. However, another idea took hold because so many of our guests have ties to the University of Michigan: we’re donating books to the Giving Library at the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.

The Giving Library is a cart stocked with new books, and every Monday through Thursday volunteers at the hospital visit the bedside of each patient with the cart in tow. Mr. Tartlet and I both used to disappear into books when we were kids (I still do), and loved the idea of giving patients and their families a diversion from the stresses of hospitalization. The best part is that when a patient chooses a book out of the Giving Library, it’s for keeps! To personalize the donation, we placed a sticker on the inside cover that commemorated our wedding and also the guest(s) for whom we are donating the book. Mr. Tartlet remembers that his brother enjoyed reading “One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish,” so we chose to gift that book on his behalf:

As much as we could, we tried to select books that held meaning to the people whose names we were writing inside:

Mama Tartlet’s favorite book to quote—even now—is  The Little Engine That Could. BM Tanya’s pick was The Lorax, and Brother Tartlet used to read  Sylvester and the Magic Pebble until the pages were quite dog-eared.

When we couldn’t donate a specific book for a guest, we just went with books that we enjoyed reading ourselves:

Are you giving out favors at your wedding? I’d love to hear what your favorite childhood reads were!

Um, and I meant to ask, but got excited about Sylvester: how are you letting the guests know? It would be fun to be able to show them some of the pics you took, so they know how you personalized them :)

I love the crap out of s’mores, but this idea is so, so cute! Honestly, part of me is so jealous that we didn’t think of this. I’ll just have to force it upon a loved one during their wedding planning. Gold star to you, Tartlet!

Ahhhh I love this idea! As an English teacher, any sort of book/reading program has a dear spot in my heart. So creative and something useful - not always the case with favors :)

As much as I love s’mores, this is probably just about the most sweet, wonderful, and just perfect favor idea ever.

Cheers to you guys, Tarlets, because you’ll be making some kids very very happy.

Hehehe - your wedding is the gift that keeps on giving!

@Mrs. Meerkat: Oh M–I had no idea! That makes me so happy that the hospital was able to give him that gift. The work they do is nothing short of miraculous.
@Miss Sparkler, @Mrs. Starfish, @Miss Pony, @jess, @haelmai, @Miss Elephant: Thanks so much, ladies. :)
@Miss Candy Apple: Mr. Tartlet’s idea was to bring the books out and display them during cocktail hour so people could peruse and find “their” book. That’s the only idea we’ve been able to brainstorm so far, though…I’m very open to suggestions! ;)

What a great idea! (Although the s’mores are really tempting!) I mean, I might actually consider doing this!! It would mean so much more to Mr. D & I than the seed packets I was leaning toward…

My favs had to include the entire Box Car Children series by Gertrude Chandler and Good Little Bad Little Girl, by Eloise Wilkin, who also happens to be a favorite illustrator of mine for children’s books.

@TheFutureMcBride: Yay! It makes me smile to read that. :)
@StrawberryBee: OMG - The Dark is Rising was one of my *favorite* series to read. Such an incredible storyline!
@Miss Snow Cone: You crack me up, Snow Cone. ;) I think I may still make a last minute run to Costco so we can have a s’mores party at the rehearsal dinner. I’m so dedicated to food…hee!
@ashmarie03: And I have a dear spot for English teachers! 7th grade–Mr. Scott Friesner–is still one of my most influential instructors to date.
@Miss Giraffe, @Mrs. Trail Mix: Thanks! :D
@bridecat: I keep waiting for a live-action Phantom Tollboth movie to be made. It would be so trippy and full of win!
