Mrs. Knitting's Picture
Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.
About Mrs. Knitting

There’s a bit of a language and communication gap between Mr. Knitting and myself and his parents. Most of the time it’s a bit unfortunate, but sometimes it’s a bit hilarious!

For a few months before our wedding Mr. Knitting’s mom had expressed a number of concerns to Mr. Knitting about our wedding looking cheap. We weren’t too sure why she thought this since knew that our wedding would not look cheap and so we just kind of ignored these comments. We thought it was odd that she thought our choice of the Faculty Club was cheap because she had originally wanted us to get married in her church and have the reception in the industrial looking church rec room. While this would have been a perfectly fine option for some, it can’t be denied that the Faculty Club has a bit more ambiance.

We invited her to see the Faculty Club with us beforehand but for various reasons she had not actually seen it before the wedding, nor had she expressed interest in seeing any pictures.

Flash forward to our wedding.

My MIL walks in the door and is stunned by how much nicer it was than she expected and goes around telling everyone what a great venue it is. We were very pleased that she liked it so much, since she had seemed so unenthusiastic about our venue choice.

The next day my mom filled us in on the rest of the story. My MIL does not have the greatest grasp of English and it turns that that she was only familiar with the word “club” in the context of a grungy dance club. That’s why she was so concerned. She thought we wanted our wedding to look like this:

A Cozy Christmas Wedding: Hilarious : wedding recap toronto Brunny

(That’s a photo of the Brunny for any of you Toronto readers!)

Needless to say she was thrilled when she walked in the door and saw that it was a completely different type of club!

This story was really funny to me because, while I think one could have a completely awesome wedding in a “club” club, that is so NOT something that would suit Mr. Knitting or me and is so far from what we actually planned.

What’s your funniest wedding miscommunication?

That is too funny. This whole planning process, she imagined you getting married in a dance club? Why didn’t she just ask someone in Polish who understood? I would have love to have seen her reaction. :)

That’s hysterical Mrs. K! My FI and I also had a miscommunication with his mom regarding the venue. We are getting married in a local community house that has recently transformed what was originally a basketball court into a beautiful English Tudor like ballroom. Its simple but elegant and has much of the vintage aesthetic that we are looking for. She also knew this was what we were looking for. So as you can imagine when we told her we were getting married here (and she still thought it was a basketball court), she was quite confused! It was so funny because she seemed hesitant but was still so supportive. When we finally showed her the pictures, she was like oh thank goodness. Anyway, I can totally relate to this, and now we both have a great story to tell! =)

LOL that’s funny - I can totally understand her apprehensions and actually kudos to her for not making a big deal out of it (if my hypothetical son told me he was getting married in a club, and I’d thought it was a real dancing club, I would definitely hit the roof and ask them to reconsider!)
