About Mrs. Hyena

Delusions of Domesticity

April 28th, 2011 @ 2:53 pm by Mrs. Hyena

In the past few weeks, I swear I’ve gone into full-on nesting mode. Bride brain? Please. All I want to do is think about decorating our house and throwing fancy dinner parties in which I serve Top Chef-like culinary masterpieces off the beautiful china we would register for if I could just find a pattern that I like.

Oh, to have problems such as this! I can’t find china that jumps out at me saying, “I am BEAUTIFUL and perfect and you have to get me and love me forever!”

I can’t decide if I want fine china or everyday china, and therefore cannot make up my mind on the sets themselves. Would I use fine china? Would the everyday china be nice enough to use for special occasions? Is it selfish to register for, like, four different sets of dishes so there’s always one that fits the occasion?!

Here are some sets I’m considering for La Casa de Las Hyenas:

Delusions of Domesticity : wedding college station registry Dishes

Mikasa “Daylight” via Bed Bath and Beyond

“Romance” Bone China via Bed Bath and Beyond

Kate Spade “Gardner Street Green” via Macy’s

Dots via The Pampered Chef

Vera Wang “Wedgwood” via Macy’s

This Noritake set is the first that I absolutely adored. Mr. Hyena came home and I was so proud to say, “I finally found dishes that I LOVE!” They are stoneware, would look good in our dining area, and would definitely be good for everyday use. So, of course, after many hours of fruitless searching, I found out they are discontinued. And I am a sad panda.

Are you registering for china? How did you decide what to get?

I LOVE your title. That is exactly how I feel! We ditched the whole china thing. ;)

I picked what I thought would make me happiest to see when I sat down in front of it. The everyday stoneware has lasted really well, but it discontinued quickly. I chose a Lenox china that coordinates with a basic platinum-rim set that they will never stop making. Mikasa does tend to discontinue frequently.

I love your choices, especially the Mikasa!

My fiance and I are pretty simple when it comes to china, so we decided to go with two types of everyday sets and not register for anything “fancy.” We’re going the Fiestaware route because we loved the bright, bold color choices. We also registered for some plainer white china that’s square in case we want something a little more sophisticated.

I love the dots pattern! We are not doing china, I started buying a set of really nice dishes a few years back thinking whatever I still needed I would register for but I just can’t eat everyday dinners on plates that cost $25 each. Plus I get sick of patterns so we are going with a nice set of white dishes from Pottery Barn. They go with everything and it is so easy to add to the collection.

Patterns are trendy and after a couple years you’ll be bored of it and want something new. I say go with a simple white/cream/ivory set. Find one that is a good quality–as in–doesn’t look cheap just because it’s simple. It’s timeless and will match whatever kitchen/dining set you have on any occassion.

We registered for a simple, easy all white set from Crate and Barrel. We have accent plates that are more casual as well as more decorative to jazz it up for special occasions if needed!

Is it just those colors of Noritake that are discontinued? We registered for the blue ones and have had no problems.

Very pretty choices!
I registered for some simple blue and white Corelle dishes. Not fancy china though since I don’t think I will have enough room for them even when we move to a larger apartment!

I’m in nesting mode, too! I love decorating for holidays, so I wanted something versitle to go with every theme. Mr. S just didn’t want something girly. We also don’t have a lot of storage space, so we decided to only get an every day set, so we went with white bone china because it’s versatile, durable and you can dress it up or dress it down.

We already have fine china so we registered for classic and durable set that’s a step up from every day dishes. They’re plain white and thin so we can fit more into the cabinets. Excited about dressing them up and playing with colorful accessories.

I actually love china! I started collecting my Lenox Opal Innocence in high school (I’m using the teacup right this second). As for casual china, we instantly loved the Amalfi collection by Eva Mendes. Make sure you check to see if there is an outlet store nearby you for future purchases. You can save a lot of money. The Lenox outlet in Jersey is sometimes up to 90% off. PS, I like the Mikasa. I like the Kate Spade too but maybe it wouldn’t work for winter or fall dinners

We registered for Fiestaware to go with are awesome black stoneware plates from Target that we got 2 years ago when we moved in together. I registered for a few place settings to fill out what we had and all of the platters and such because we have nothing.

I am planning on registering for a set of white “fine china” so that when I have holidays I have nice dishes to eat off of.

I love the “Romance one” - I have one that looks like that. All white, which goes with everything :) and it was gift from my sisters. We registered at two different places and we registered one set of china in each. In one we got a white and green pattern and in the other and red and black with flowers. All of them beautiful.

Since there are guests who pay no attention to registries, we ended receiving another set in grey… still lovely though…

Just got with the one you like best and I think you could register for 2 - everyday and fancy.

I love your choices.
I didn’t think I’d get any use out of china. We currently live overseas in a one bedroom. My mother convinced me someday I’d want it so I registered for Kate Spade June Lane set. It’s soooo pretty!
Go with whatever makes your heart go pitter patter and then you can always just use plain white for every day.

I love the bone china. They showed that to us when we registered at BB&B and she knocked the mug several times onto the wood desk to show us how strong it is. The desk’s surface is all chipped now from them doing that demonstration, but the mug is just fine! Too bad it’s pretty expensive. :-\ We wanted every day stuff, so we registered for two sets at Target. Nothing fancy for us. :)

Hello, my name is CA, and I’m a china-holic. Seriously, I am obsessed with our china, and I totally want to get it so I can throw beautiful dinner parties :) Or just eat ice-cream out of the bowls. Whatever.

We almost went with the KS Gardner St Green!! Love it.

That Kate Spade pattern is one of my faves. Even though we weren’t sure about registering for china, I’m glad we did–just in case we change our minds (and can take advantage of the discount)!

Love all your choices! We got ivory bone china everyday wear, so we can dress them up and dress them down. Then we registered for accent plates, a teapot, teacup and saucers, and dessert plates in the lenox chirp collection. Therefore, when we are having fancy dinners we can use our beautiful bone china (hotel collection at Macy’s) along with pieces from the chirp collection. I figure if I want something new when I’m older, I can go to the thrift store or ebay which often has complete sets and pick something out. I also may inherit something in 30 years too.
