I love reading and recycling, Photoshop and reality TV, making lame jokes and then laughing at them, quoting movies, and Mr. Hyena most of all. We're planning a laid-back, unintentionally DIY wedding with a cocktail-party vibe, and can't wait to celebrate our nuptials with our nearest and dearest!

OK, so I know this isn’t exactly a vital DIY project, but I figured I should have something pretty to hang my wedding dress on for pictures. I keep seeing this image around the interwebs…

…and I wahahaaaant! But to me, $25 for a hanger is a little steep, so I made my own! And I decided to make them for my bridesmaids as well.

I found these nice wood hangers at Target, at about five dollars for five hangers, and I got a fine-point hot pink acrylic paint pen at Michaels for about three dollars. Here’s how I did it:

1) Pick a font (I used “HUNTSON” bolded). Type the names you want to use, and then print them out. Remember that a 72-point font is approximately one inch tall. (You may have to print a couple times to figure out what size fits. Not all fonts are sized equally.)

3) Fill in the outline with your paint pen. A fine-point pen works better for thin fonts, but if you’ve got a wider font, a medium-tip pen will make the work go faster. Let the paint dry and then go over it again. Done!

Whatcha think? Here’s a better image of the paint color:

Side note: How WEIRD is it seeing your married name written out?! Every time I see it, all I can think is, “That’s FMIL Hyena’s name!” That’s going to take some getting used to.

I made myself a wood and wire hanger with Mrs. *new-last-name* as well as one for all of my bridesmaids. I took them over to my parents’ house to see if my dad could attach the wire to the hanger for me, and my mom asked why I was making one for my FMIL… Even after I told her it was for me it took her a minute to get it!

I think these are so so cool! (I am also making them for my BMs) I even enlisted the help of my FFIL to help add little “gouges” on the “shoulder” piece of the hanger so that we have a place to hook the ribbons that keep dresses looking nice on hangers.

I personalized some hangers very similar to this too! Your’s look great! Because your hangers don’t have notches for the straps (mine didn’t either) one thing I would suggest is to put a very small nail on either side to hold the straps of the dress up on.

I’m the same way! When people call me Mrs. ____, I think to myself, that’s my husband’s mom! Now that it’s my name, too, I can’t get myself to call my MIL Mrs. ___…have to decide what I’ll call her instead. : )

I am so stealing this for my BMs!!! I can’t see mine turning out as perfectly as yours but dammit I will try. I’ve been looking for an affordable option to the personalized hanger for my girls and haven’t found one I liked until THIS. Gracias for the endless inspiration, H!

love this!

it is WEIRD to see my married name on things! I bought a hanger from lilafrancis and when I showed my fiance he just giggled, he loved seeing it!

I just made a wood and wire one for my FI’s cousin’s shower. I’m so excited to give it to her! She is a French teacher so I put Mme. (Madame) Lastname instead of Mrs. I love personalized gifts. That way you know it wasn’t a last minute thing. I love the painting technique - I hadn’t seen that before. Looks great!

These are uber cute! Great tip about pressing harder to make an indentation–I never would have thought to do that!

Looks great! Walmart has some great hangers with the dents in them already ( I got a pack of 20 for about $20, yes I have a problem…)

I am using my cricut to cut the names out with the sticky paper, my hand is not nearly as steady as yours!

@KellyBee: That’s a great idea! Thanks for the suggestion.
@BrightYellowGaloshes: Yep, just went through that too!
@Miss Seal: Aw, you’re welcome. It wasn’t too difficult a project, I’m sure yours will turn out wonderfully!
@mittens111211: Awww! So cute he was excited. :)
