Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!

Fun with Fonts: Tutorial

April 28th, 2011 @ 4:56 pm by Mrs. Snow Cone

Given that Miss Hyena and Miss Pony have recently tackled the font issue, I figured I’d toss my hat into the ring, too. However, rather than giving you some serious font inspiration, I’ve decided to help out my fellow DIY/tech-challenged brides with a step-by-step tutorial for how to download and install new fonts.

(Note: I am using Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007. I don’t know if this is the only or proper way to get fonts into Office, but it works for me!)

(Another note: If I can successfully install new fonts, anyone can. True story: freshman year of college, I managed to delete Windows from my laptop. Not a file or two…the entire operating system. I’m technologically challenged to say the least, and even I can handle this little font extravaganza.)

Step 1: Go to Google and type in “download free font” and you’ll get a bunch of different sites. My personal favorites are 1001FreeFonts and DaFont.

Step 2: Browse around the websites, looking for fonts that appeal to you. Most sites have their fonts split into helpful categories, such as script, handwritten, famous, modern, etc.

Step 3: Once you find a font you like, click the “download” button for that specific font. When the download window comes up, I click “Open with Windows Explorer (default).” From there, you will receive a zipped file that contains a couple different files.

Step 4: Open the new folder you’ve created with the zipped files. Anywhere in the folder box, right-click and select “Extract All”—pay attention to where the extracted files are saved. I then usually go to the location of the extracted files and cut and paste them into an easier-to-find file location such as my “Downloads” folder.

Step 5: Go to your control panel (Start Button –> Control Panel). Click on “Appearance and Personalization.” From there, click on the “Install or Remove Font” link under the “Font” heading.

Step 6: You’ll get a window with all of your fonts. Right-click on the window (not on a specific font), and select “Install New Font…” You’ll then see a window like this:

Remember in Step 4 how I commented that I typically cut and paste the newly extracted files into an easy-to-find file? This is why. In this window, when you click on the folder that contains your new font files, you will see a sub-folder titled the name of your new font, like my “Scriptina” folder.

Step 7: Double-click the “Scriptina” sub-folder, and you’ll see this:

Click the “Install” button on the right. Installing a font takes about 10 seconds on my computer, tops.

Step 8: Go to a Microsoft Office program and your newly downloaded and installed font should be there, ready for use!!

Here’s a look at my new font:

Did you choose to jazz up your font choices through downloading new fonts? Any favorite fonts out there?

LOVE THIS! I wish I had something like this to follow when I downloaded my fonts!

PS: Is it just me, or can you get completely lost in fonts? I swear I’m only going to download one or two and end up with 20 or 30!

I spent hours looking at fonts the other day, I have a problem.

Also, you can open up the fonts folder and the folder where you have your fonts saved, and simply drag your new fonts over to the Fonts folder. Saves a few clicks, especially if you downloaded 70 fonts…..I may have done that.

What impeccable timing you have! I just downloaded a new font today, and I totally forgot how to install it (even though I’ve done it at least 5 times before!) Thanks!

Ahhhhh fonts! I love them all! I’m a fan of the ones that look like the old-school typewriters.

Just a head’s up that, at some point, Scriptina Pro was available as a free download. I think it does a better job of kerning (spacing between letters) than the original.

You can actually cut out a couple steps since you’re on Vista! Here’s what you do:

Step 1-4 are the same, but on step 4 make sure you click “Show extracted files when complete.”

Step 5: A new folder will open up with your extracted files. Right click on the font name, select “Install” and you’re done! (You might need to grant permission, depending on how your computer is set up) The font will be readily available in all of your programs.

If you have multiple fonts in the same folder, just select them all before you right click.

Hope it helps!

@misskarianne: @Caribee: @lmc183: @jen1015: @Kcoleybear: ooo yay! I was worried fonts were so silly to get tripped up over, so I’m glad this tutorial helped out!
@Miss Ireland: @Charisse: @lsabic: thanks for the additional help! I figured I wasn’t do this whole thing as efficiently as possible, but I consider it a success if the fonts show up when all is said and done :)
@Miss Candy Apple: @toshella: @ashmarie03: @Miss Hyena: @Miss Pony: @Miss Tartlet: @Miss Seal: @Miss Carousel: one afternoon, I spent HOURS looking at fonts, and I’m pretty sure Mr. Snow Cone thought I was officially off my rocker. Times New Roman just won’t cut it!
@Ms. Ferris Wheel: first of all, thanks for teaching me what “kerning” means! I’m not surprised that there’s a font version that improved on this feature, since it’s sort of an issue on the Scriptina font!
