Dressing the Groom—Decisions!

April 28th, 2011 @ 9:18 am by Ms. Gazelle

Mr. Gazelle has made his decisions on what he is going to be wearing for our wedding! I’m so excited because I think he is going to look amazing!

Back in March I was walking through the mall on my lunch break, and I spotted this sign inside Holt Renfrew:

A special made-to-measure-shirt event was going on.

As I mentioned before, Mr. Gazelle has a body shape that is tough to fit with off-the-rack items. He has a broad chest and shoulders, then narrows through the waist. He also has longer than average arms. Typical off-the-rack shirts that fit through his shoulders tend to tent out through his torso. A made-to-measure-shirt event seemed perfect for him to get a well-fitting dress shirt.

We popped by the store that weekend. Holt Renfrew had many different fabrics to choose from—stripes, solids, you name it! Mr. Gazelle went with a solid white shirt with a subtle paisley texture to it. It is really nice! There were so many options to choose from—collar spread, placket, cuffs…who knew?

Mr. Gazelle also had some decisions to make about his suit. He kicked around getting a suit made online, but ultimately he really wanted a good suit as an investment piece that was going to fit well. He decided to go with a three-piece made-to-measure suit from Holt’s in an amazing grey pinstripe pattern.

Unfortunately, all I have is a crappy iPhone picture, but the tie looks amazing with the fabric. The sales associate at Holt’s worked hard to find the best measurements for the most flattering cut of suit. The suit will be made here in Canada and should be ready in about a month or so. He decided to go with a three-piece wool suit so that he can wear the vest instead of the jacket as the evening goes on; plus, he can use each piece separately in the future.

And finally the last touch—awesome socks! Mr. Gazelle picked up these awesome argyle-style ones:

He’ll be wearing them with these shoes:

I’m so excited. I think he’s going to look so handsome!

Did your groom decide to buy a suit as an investment piece?

I have had several shirts custom made for the FH. He is really skinny with broad shoulders and really long arms also, and 14in forearms.
We also bought him a great suit rather than rent, but again, renting really isn’t that great of an option with a 29in waist and 34 inseam. Such a hard size to fit and with a suit, I could have it tailored for him.
He is brand new to the whole tailoring thing and he is really loving have cloths that “really” fit well.

We opted to have the groomsmen purchase a suit to match the charcoal one my FI already owned and has only worn twice. However, FI’s pants are now way too big so we are using the $100 in reward certificates we got from Men’s Wearhouse to get him a new pair of pants to be perfectly tailored to him. (we bought everyone’s suits together to take advantage of their sale so we had a lot of rewards points. . . bonus)

Yup, we ended up buying a suit at Brooks Brothers (on sale!) and having it tailored to fit him. He is also hard to fit. He’s not heavy, but he’s got a very large neck, so we also ordered a custom shirt.

I have my reservations as to how much wear this suit will get since we are not dress up people, but he does look awesome! And there’s at least my cousin’s wedding a month after mine.

We plan on just renting suits/tux once we decide on the final look we want but I already know we’ll have to custom order Mr. D’s shirt b/c he’s a former amateur body builder and his shoulders, chest and back are pretty hard to fit off the rack.

I love the idea of a nice suit rather than rent a tux. I’m hoping that SO will go that route.

I am really impressed with the make your own shirt idea. I think that buying a suit is going to really be the way to go in the future. Your FI is going to look amazing on your wedding day! (Not that he doesn’t always ;)
