Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!

My Love-Hate Relationship

April 28th, 2011 @ 12:08 pm by Mrs. Snow Cone

…with my hair.

I really like being a strawberry blonde; I think it helps to separate me from the masses of blondes and brunettes running amok in the world today (kidding…sort of). My devotion to my hair color is not representative of my feelings toward my hair on a whole. Specifically, I have one main beef with my locks.

Simply stated, my hair hates volume. For realz. I’m one of those girls who can spend 60 minutes in the bathroom perfecting my ‘do and then step outside into moderate humidity or, God forbid, a drizzle, and I’m looking at a hairstyle flatter than the Midwest. As a result, I pretty much have two options…curled ends courtesy of a curling iron, or stick-straight hair thanks to my straightener.

Curly. Duh. (Personal photo from 2009)

While both have their merits, I feel like I’m constantly falling to one of those two predictable defaults. Plus, I coat both ‘dos in a ridiculous amount of hairspray to lock the style in place, resulting in a totally stiff, unnatural, unmoving look, which is less than ideal. I want a styling process that gives me some volume, movement, and body, but without being 100% curled or 100% straight, which I had written off as impossible with my hair. Until now.

Enter: my new best friend—ConAir thermal ionic velcro rollers (and yes, my old pals hairspray and more hairspray). I can’t say enough good things about these little doodads. They manage to give me some volume and curl without making me look like a pageant contestant. Plus I feel like the finished look is polished but doesn’t look overly laborious, which is always a good thing. Twenty minutes in these babies and a couple coats of hairspray make me one little happy camper.

Don’t get me wrong—I’m definitely getting my hair done by a professional for the wedding. Nevertheless, I still have a good number of wedding-related events that I’d like to be able to doll myself up for, such as the shower and bachelorette party. This stylistic revolution gives me hope that I can look presentable as a bride-to-be at these upcoming events!

Um. Can I just say that I love you with that super-short hair, a la 2007?? So cute.

I think your hair is pretty! Mine does this kind of half-hearted “wavy” thing where it just looks bad. Doesn’t help that I’ve pretty much given up styling it. Only 23 more days til I cut it all off!!!

I agree - love the strawberry straight look! I’ve always had the opposite problem - doesn’t it always work that way - everyone wanting what they can’t have?!? I have huge hair, wavy, uncontrollably frizzy, half straight, half curly nonsense of hair. I have to do everything I can to get it smooth (like yours) and staight or work with it to keep it curly/wavy and not frizz out all over and on top. yikes it’s a mess.

I love the color of your hair! I have never had good talent with hot rollers, although I would die to have that look. I might just have to try your secret out!

I may have to try these. I HATE when my curls come out looking like Shirley Temple!

Snowy, you are super-cute. Period. That said, I’m so diggin’ the velcro rollers…need to head to the nearest big-box to get me some.

I think your hair looks great both curly and straight! But I can totally sympathize with your volume frustrations as my hair is just like yours - fine and straight and lacking any volume. Humidity and dampness are my worst enemies too! The best thing that ever happened to my hair was having two kids. Somehow I ended up with doubly thick hair after having two babies. My hair is still stick straight and fights volume, but with seemingly twice as much of it now, it doesn’t look nearly as flat as it used to. Blow drying in sections like the hairdresser does also helps create a little volume.

hmmm i may need to try these! I just got a new cut that’s much like your length, and want to try different ways of styling it…. i usually use the curling iron for curls, but always end up burning myself, haha… plus, my curls never seem to last! wah! looks like i will be buying some of these bad boys!

From my experiences, hair spray really weighs hair down most of the time, making it look even more flat. I only hairspray when I have my hair up of pinned back to keep flyaways down.

My method to getting volume is blow-drying my hair upside down. Sometimes I will use volumizing mousse beforehand too. And of course, I also use volumizing shampoo and conditioner.

My hair can be curly or staright too- definitely a love/hate relationship. I’m starting to embrace the natural curlyness though. If I do want to actually put effort into my hair, I love Profiles curlers. Even though I have curly hair- it’s more frizzy, I could never get nice curls….the curlers changed my life and gave me nice curls on the wedding day.

Ok so I have the same type of volume-free hair, just longer, and after an engagement pic hair fiasco yesterday I’m hating mine too. So I’m really glad you posted this! Going to go buy those rollers (and hope I can figure out how to use them) ASAP!

I relate! I have hair like this. I have no tips, I just SUCK at hair. But I WILL be looking for these the next time I walk down the hair product/accessory aisle.

I too hope I can work that kind of magic, quickly!

Velcro rollers are a magical thing. A stylist once gave me a sample of this to try, which also worked wonders for volume!

Thanks for sharing! I definitely need to try those out! I also have stick straight hair that is lacking in the volume dept as well. To pour salt on the wound, I recently chopped EIGHT inches off my hair cuz I wanted some change. Yeah, no bueno! Hopefully I’ll get the same results, your hair looks great girl!

@Miss Candy Apple: @Miss Hyena: @future.mrs.awe: I’m glad to hear the short-hair is well-received, since it’s coming back ASAP.
@tocarat: @Miss Carousel: thanks! I do have to admit, my hair color is kind of my fav thing about my appearance. The day I go gray will be a sad, sad event.
@Rgeddy: I guess the long story short is no one’s 100% happy with their locks, haha!
@tbowling15: @.twist.: @Seaside: @Miss Canaras: @Crown: @Mrs. Meerkat: @tocarat: yes. get them. use them. love them. I love that they aren’t hot, so there’s no pre-heating, and they just sit on your head while you go about your business!
@Miss Tartlet: ooo I am DEFINITELY intrigued by that! I’ll have to look into working in into my hair regimen!
@Mrs. Starfish: I think saying you had “nice curls” on the wedding day is an understatement, Starfish!
@dreamocracy: I took your advice and am going spray-free today! so far, I have to say, I am pretty impressed. Thanks for the tip!
@GirlyGirlBead: glad to hear there’s still hope for me!

My hair is fine and flat. I was really worried about growing my hair long for the wedding would mean months of drab hair styles but discovering how to curl my hair with a flat iron has been the best thing I’ve learned ever! You can create loose waves that give hair a good amount of body!
